Chrome is only slightly better for me. Instead of one process using up 80,000K, I get one that's 50,000K, one that's 15,000K, and a bunch of smaller ones adding up to the same approximate total.

I think it's so individual tabs can fail without the whole browser crashing /notawebbrowserprogrammer

Chrome seems to do a better job of cleaning itself up though after tabs have been closed. Firefox just keeps climbing and climbing.

Chrome memory usage over time won't ballon like FF. Since chrome uses a per process approach it doesn't suffer memory fragmentation nearly as bad as FF does.

It still uses somewhere around 1.75 GB for me with 12 tabs open (mostly reddit, no Flash or anything).

How do you know it is not using flash?

[–]kkjdroid 0 points1 point ago

I don't have any sites open that use Flash.

[–]DasWood 0 points1 point ago

That doesn't mean flash is not running.

I guess it could theoretically be running, but it wouldn't be too resource-intensive with no content loaded.

Well, unused RAM is wasted RAM.

Buy lots of ram, complain because programs use it...makes sense.

[–]cooljeanius 5 points6 points ago

It's not using all your ram that people complain about, it's when programs try to use more than they're able to use and end up slowing down as a result.

Then people should complain about Firefox causing a lot of swapping. That is not what they are saying.

Yeah, but I might want to run more than one program at the same time.

Seriously. I am listening to iTunes and on the internet. Together, both programs take up over a half-gig.

Don't use iTunes, use something lighter like foobar2k, it starts up faster and has more features.

Yep, I second foobar2000: it's super lightweight .. for playing files, tho. If lanks1 likes buying stuff through iTunes and getting their recommendations, then, not so much.

I like that it has context menu file options, so if I love a track when I hear it I can copy it somewhere while it's playing.

Try MemoryFox add-on. It helps.

[–]Kanpai 3 points4 points ago

It's not that bad. Everyone who looks at their Task Manager and sees that firefox.exe is taking up 542K (mine at present) ram and flips out needs to calm down. In an age where more and more people have 4-8+GBs of ram, a half gig is not that big of a deal. Moreover, Windows is really lazy about freeing up memory when it doesn't have to, so if you have ram to spare, your firefox memory is always going to balloon. If you need that memory at any point, chances are you can get some of it back. Otherwise, what do you care? As has been said here, unused RAM is just going to waste.

When it's taking up a third of your RAM, it's a problem. Chrome takes up nearly 2 of my 6 GB of RAM.

[–]Etni3s 2 points3 points ago

Why is it a problem when it's taking up a third of your RAM?

[–]kkjdroid 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, Windows wants between 1/6 and 1/4, and I have other programs.

Try using Waterfox. About the same memory usage, but since it's x64 and uses some usage techniques to reduce dependencies, it's a bit faster.

do all plugins work the same?

[–]Misharum_Kittum 1 point2 points ago

That was my first thought too, and according to their FAQ, yes they do!

cool... mayhaps i'll give it a try!

[–]revile221 1 point2 points ago

Yes indeed they do. The only thing you'll have to do is download the 64-bit versions of flash and java, which are included on the download page. There really is no downside, I've been using it for 2 weeks now and it's great.

I have 12 GBs of RAM and FF still causes me problems. I just said the hell with it and went outside and got some fresh air.

Chrome just makes it look like less because it splits everything up into separate processes, so you have to add everything up

Turn on don't load tabs until selected. This is a great future if you like to leave lots of tabs open.

My Firefox is using 1.5GB of RAM right now. Even with all of my other system processes (an open VM VPN'ed into work, Steam, GTalk, etc. etc.) I have 9GB of free RAM.

I don't see a problem. Most RAM goes unused anyways.

An important fact you left out is: How many tabs? I've currently got 45 tabs open with a couple of youtube vids, and Chrome is using ~1,3 GB RAM.

[–]kkjdroid 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Chrome is using > 1.5 GB for me and I only have 12 tabs, no Flash/YouTube.

[–]flammable[!] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's nothing. I get upwards of 2.3GB regularly

This is a screenshot of my processes sorted by top memory usage. Chrome has 44 processes total, I counted.
