So... what happens if you start sliding down?

Hold your iceaxe to your chest and dig in, and slide down on your chest. don't try to use crampons to dig in or you'll probably twist your ankle badly.

Wow, thats actually useful advice. Here I expected someone to say, "throw your hands in the air and just enjoy your final moments".

Amazing book, I want to be more like Japhy...I may have to settle for naming my future dog that instead

You are correct. They're also usually in groups so if one guy starts sliding down the guy behind him jumps to the other side to become an anchor.

"Oh, my friend just fell off the mountain? Well, I'll just jump off the other side!"

Yes, looks like they're still roped up, the weight of yourself on the other side of the ridge will stop the other persons fall. It's not a bad idea for ridgelines like this which are approaching the limits of being able to self arrest with an ice axe.

Wow where the hell did my mind go...As I was reading your comment I was for some reason picturing your explanation of the person falling digging the iceaxe into their chest and slide it down while at the same time to not use crampons to dig in deeper which would somehow fuck up your ankle.

Received "Freedom of the Hills" for Christmas and just recently learned this. It's funny how many simple things could save your life but are in no way intuitive.

I think it's a bit too high place to have beacons to be seen... Unless Rohan has airplanes then maybe.

[–]Tetren 15 points16 points ago

Have to walk on the windward side, snow is weaker on the other side if a cornice forms you could fall through.

[–]Xoebe 2 points3 points ago

That is some incredible faith in the integrity of that snowpack.

[–]Garrrr_Pirate 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really, snow like that has been subject to repeated freeze thaw cycles and wind ablation. What remains is a hard icy pack called neve.

Sturdy stuff.

Earlier tonight I walked along the top of a muddy hill at an incline like this one on my way to tinker with one of those portable electric street signs. I thought that was kind of scary. This picture makes me physically uncomfortable. That's terrifying.
