RRoD is a pretty easy fix. I run a computer and games console repair shop, takes me less than an hour to do. First one I ever did took a little longer, but that one is still going strong! YouTube for instructions, eBay for an RRoD kit (about £2). Use one that has nylon washers, I've found they work best.

There are 5 different motherboard manufacturers for the non-slim Xbox. Only 2 are really worth fixing with the RRoD fix. THIS shows the different boards identified by their power connectors. The 1st Gen can be fixed with the kit, the 2nd gen needs to be heated with a heat gun to re-flow solder points (which will need to be done over and over again) and the 3rd gen doesn't red ring.

I can see why they switched to the Jasper model, the first two were so damn blurry.

Saving this comment. I have a 4 year old Xbox that got a RRoD and I never went to fix it...

Any other advice on what I should do? Any other items that I might need? I won't have anything except for what comes in the repair package, would I need a soldering thing?

[–]_nea102_ 0 points1 point ago

Most the time you don't need anything other than the RRoD fix kit, some torx drivers, a flathead screwdriver and some thermal grease (good stuff like Arctic Silver). Occasionally you'll need a heatgun.

[–]BoD-heli 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Remove the old as hell thermal paste. I think the stuff is called an emulsifier, the stuff you need to remove the paste. It smells like oranges.

I have some but I can't find it atm and trust me, it's a hell of a lot better than trying to remove it with a tower or something or putting new paste over old paste.

Found it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

try to find your specific error code first (google it) you may also need a heat gun

Microsoft fix them for free. And if you're lucky, they replace it with a slim.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this because my XBox RRoD'd at just under 3 years old, and thought it wouldn't be covered. I just remembered that Microsoft extended the warranty for RRoD to 3 years.

I was under the impression the RROD was to signal hardware failure, and not one specific problem.

Maybe there is and the kit fixes the most common problem.

[–]_nea102_ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The RRoD is (99 times out of 100) caused by the board warping when heat builds up, lousy thermal paste and lousy clamps that hold the heat sinks on. The heatsink clamps are an X design so have lots of flex in them, meaning that when the board warps, it cracks the solder balls on the CPU and/or GPU. The RRoD indicates a "general hardware failure".

When you use a kit to repair it, you replace the X-clamps with bolts and washers which holds the heatsinks down much better, stopping the CPU and GPU being free to move on the board. That's a pretty simplified version of whats happening.

Here's a pic of an X-clamp, you'll see why they flex so much

I have a friend who had a bunch of RRODed xboxes that friends gave him when they replaced them, and he gave a couple to me ... I think I static-zapped the CPU or something whilst trying to apply new thermal paste -_-

then I proceeded to throw one of them out ... a few days later, I remembered halo 3 was still in the drive, and I went out to get it back from the trash only to find it had been collected.

it was quite a party.

[–]Whenthenighthascome 1 point2 points ago

Why would this happen? Wouldn't it turn off after 6 hours? Was it the heat?

[–]Shagomir 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To comply with EU regulations, the 360 uses a lead-free solder. Lead solder is malleable and will resist damage, however the lead-free solder will crack if stressed. Therefore, the lead solder will react to overheating better, and you have a higher heat tolerance for the components. Essentially, this lets you use cheaper cooling solution.

The decision to use lead-free solder was made very late in the design process, and the design of the cooling system was not changed to compensate for the heat requirements for lead-free solder. It took until the third generation for Microsoft to find a motherboard and cooling solution that would work with the device.

If your 360 regularly overheats, and was manufactured before they switched to the third generation of motherboards, there is a very high chance that you will get the red ring of death at some point.

The "Towel Trick" and using a heat gun to re-melt the solder both work, but the best solution is to get one of the third generation or later 360s that has an adequate cooling solution.

The Eye was rimmed with fire, but was itself glazed, yellow as a cat's, watchful and intent, and the black slit of its pupil opened on a pit, a window into nothing. One moment only it stared out...as from some great window immeasurably high there stabbed northward a flame of red, the flicker of a piercing Eye... Also, when I saw this picture, it said "360 views" Lol!

You should have acted. They're already broken! The customer service tickets told of their failure. Your uptime was merely a delay, til the time after Skyrim was opened, when the sons of XBox would buy their own doom. But no one wanted to believe. Believe it even existed. And when the truth finally dawned... it dawned in red rings! But there is one they fear. In their tongue, he is PC- Personal Computer!

They actually fixed this issue with the S models. They're not 100% reliable of course, but just as much as a PC (random shit not working) and a PS3 now.

[–]FormerSlacker 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

PS3 had exactly the same issue as RROD (cracked solder joints), YLOD.

Judging by google trends, it seems to be just as severe, if not more so, but for some reason Sony has escaped major backlash and criticism.

[–]EagleBurn 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The 360 came out first and it happened first. By time the PS3 came out, it was already old news, and the RROD just stuck for some reason. It's sad too, because Microsoft has a much better return policy and process than Sony.

[–]Shagomir 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem has been traced back to the lead-free solder that is used. Lead-free solder will crack when components are overheated. Lead solder does not crack as it is more malleable.

They have to use the inferior solder because it is mandated by the EU and other countries now.

Don't get me wrong, I still have massive respect for Microsoft/Xbox. If you look at where they've come from since 2001 its remarkable.

I still shout 'Xbox' whenever I go over to my friend's place just to fuck with it.

However, hearing from friends/assholes how they've owned an Xbox for x amounts of years and had to deal with RROD for x amounts of times, it doesn't fill me with confidence. One even claims he's an Xbox engineer now!

While that might have a modicum of fun, I still would like to know my console will be alive for at least 5 years. While it might be "trending", I've yet to meet/know someone who's PS3 got the YLOD.

Friend of mine puts toothpicks in the fans on the back so they don't spin and turns the XBox on for 10 - 15 mins, then turns it off to cool down and turns it on again.

Same concept as the "towel trick", heat it up, melt the silicone inside that is jacked up, turn it off so it cools off, turn it back on = w1n (temporarily, eventually the issue will probably happen again).

The only real solution is a new XBox, but the new ones don't seem to have the RRoD issue much at all any more thankfully.

[–]Shagomir 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not silicone that's jacked up, it's the lead-free solder that is used. Lead-free solder will crack when components are overheated. Lead solder does not crack as it is more malleable.

Why do they use lead-free solder? Because the EU mandated it.
