Oh its amazing I wreak havoc on the school system and am very vocal about changing as much as I can. I have petitioned the board of education several times demanding that students be allowed to take a philosophy class in high school to help them get there heads on straight, and also to broaden (at least in Texas) the actual curriculum of Government class to show other types of governments or lack of. I am always trying to give the students an non-objective viewpoint so they have more room to make their decisions, and hey I got to admit the kids seem to like it a lot!

This article sums it up really well. There are a lot of different schools of thought within Christian anarchism; I'm something like an anarcho-communist with Christian justifications for my beliefs.

[–]PhonyUsername 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the bible say things about following the state and paying your taxes? If so how does one who is anarcho-christian justify this or do they interpret it different than it is read?

[–][deleted] 90 points91 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The passage you're thinking of is the passage that most Christians use to justify the payment of taxes and general obedience to the state. But a person with a background in Christian gnosticism (which is pretty necessary for a full understanding of the NT) will read it differently. Here's the passage you have in mind:

"Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn’t we?” But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” And they were amazed at him."

This is in Mark 12. A little background:

  1. There's a running theme in the NT of people (pharisees, scriptural lawyers, hypocrites, etc.) trying to trap Jesus in his own teachings in order to make a fool of him and/or have him arrested by the Romans. During this time, the Romans were having extensive trouble with Jewish religious fundamentalist groups known as Zealots, who were known for attempts at violent uprising. They were intensely anti-Roman, and on those grounds discouraged the payment of taxes to the Roman state. In this passage, there is attempt to make Jesus look like a Zealot - and indeed, he was eventually crucified for being one - though he did not identify as a Zealot.

  2. But still, Jesus isn't saying 'taxes are good and states are good.' He's saying the opposite, in fact: money is bad, states are bad; return this nonsense to the nonsense it came from and do without it. This makes much more sense in the grand scheme of Jesus' teachings: that money should not be treasured, and that one is better off (spiritually) without it.

  3. So a lot of non-canonical books, including Christian gnostic books, feature Jesus saying things about living life as 'a passer-by.' This means that one should fundamentally disassociate from one's body and material interests in order to attain a higher purification of the soul. The fact that Christ asks the hypocrites to look at the face on the coin demands that readers wonder at the origins of their own faces. We read in Genesis that man is made in the image of God; therefore, what this passage is also saying is that one should leave the coin inscribed with the image of Caesar to Caesar, and give over oneself, which is inscribed with the image of God, to God.

It's a beautiful passage and it frustrates me to no end that it's used by money grubbing politicians to milk people out of resources, but hey, that's what states do.

I feel like you should have been my Sunday school teacher.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. And in asking for a denarius (which was about a day's wages) Jesus instantly created a rift — or rather, exposed a rift that had already existed. It was the Pharisees who could produce a denarius, not any of the working people around them, which brought to light the corruption of the Temple at the time and its corroboration with the Roman Empire. The Temple was no longer a holy institution; it was a tool of the State whose purpose had become one of oppression instead of liberation. And the Pharisees got rich at the expense of the poor.

In addition to that, when Jesus asks them whose image is on the coin, he's also highlighting just what exactly was inscribed on the coin. Any denarius at that time would bear the image of the Caesar, and it would say, "Caesar [Name, in this case Augustus], the Son of God." To equate oneself with God is blasphemy. So Jesus essentially says, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's — which is nothing, because he's a blasphemer — and to God what is God's, which is everything."

I'll have to dig around in my closet for a dissertation a friend of mine wrote for his Masters Thesis regarding Jesus' cursing of the fig tree and its correlation with the Temple Event or driving out of the money-changers. It was fascinating.

I don't want to rain on your parade but there's a few of them that aren't explained away as easily, 1st one:

Romans 13

1Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

6For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

7Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

[–][deleted] 59 points60 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No no, you're not raining on my parade at all. I've studied this stuff for years and years! I love nothing more than to go to the mat for it.

So there's interesting background to the epistles sent to the Romans. One of the things to keep in mind is that the epistles were written during a time of, well, a couple of things:

  1. Great dissent within the church as to whether or not one had to be firstly Jewish to be a Christian, which threatened to strip the Greek and Roman churches (early Pauline Christians) of most of their attendance. Therefore, Paul had a vested interest in affirming Greek and Roman cultural values in order to maintain church membership. This is why you see a lot of meditations on Greek and Roman culture in the (likely) epistles of Paul, including rants against circumcision and discussions of female Greek and Roman fashions, especially relating to hair and head coverings.

  2. Paul was an apocalyptic fellow. He believed the end times were directly upon mankind - that he, in his lifetime, would see the return of Christ. In fact, if you read to the end of the chapter you're partially quoting, that's precisely what he says: be quiet and hunker down, because the world is about to end, and then the evil powers which oppress you will be undone by God. He writes, "And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light." So in other words, Paul is not concerned about constructing a more just world on Earth, because he believes that it is literally about to end.

  3. Lastly, how each Christian wants to deal with the epistles is up to them, in my thinking. An epistle written then is really no different than any internal Church doctrine written now. You can find different accounts of Christians living communally in the same NT.

  4. 'Powers and principalities' are a meditation of Paul's at large. Certainly in Ephesians 6 he seems to associate the evil urges of demonic powers with the oppressive forces that exist in the real world. But his statement, even if you do consider Pauline doctrine the only Orthodoxy, is still nonsensical in the context of Christian anarchism: if the only authorities that exist are ordained by God, then they will be just as justified in ceasing to exercise authority as they were in usurping it. ;) One often finds Paul much more interested in rhetoric than scripture.

Finally, I'm a little disturbed that good exegesis is increasingly described as 'explaining away' scripture. It's not explaining away anything to say that good reading yields deeper meaning than poorly informed reading. Biblical literalism is a fairly modern approach to a text that's anything but literal; even the scholars of the middle ages knew that there was more work to be done in reading the texts of Christianity than 'welp, it appears to say this, so yeah, that must be it.' I'm all for the priesthood of all believers, but I'm also for the development of an intense contemporary Christian scholarship, and that's darn hard to nurture when Christians are hearing 'LITERALISM IS THE ONLY INTERPRETATION' not only from evangelicals, but from nonreligious folk, too.

I don't even look scary or that counter-culture, but I live in an extremely small town in the midwest, where people are not always the most open minded bunch, if I recall the town has a total of 1 black family. Anywho I've had a number of wonderfully amusing reactions from people who hear I'm a die-hard anarchist and a socialist...and I foster and help socialize rescued dogs that came from abusive homes. Interestingly I've had parents of friends who are surprised I can weld, I guess because queer leftists don't weld? I dunno

It's like they thought I'd spend all my time have Satanist sodomy rituals or something, they also tend to be extremely surprised that I'm well read and actually have thought out explanations and justifications for my political beliefs.

I encounter that, too. It's like people hear the word 'anarchist' or 'communist' and immediately think 'crazy teenage angst bullshit', not 'part of a long intellectual tradition involving some of the greatest thinkers of all time.' I feel for you putting up with that kind of nonsense.

I have had a few (2-3, maybe 4) close punk friends in the past, so this comment is based on them. Considering the type of person I am/was, there is no reason for me to know anyone who is punk. I was a loner in high school and I'm the sort of person who starches his dress shirt today.

I knew one guy in high school. He was the most down to Earth person I knew. He talked first (I was a withdrawn loner and very socially anxious). He was the only person who talked to me in gym. He introduced me to Pantera and from there were talked more about music. He had family problems, especially with his step dad. From this I learned that people really need a stable household, where they feel safe. This person did cross country and played guitar so he can spend as little time at home. I couldn't and can't imagine how that feels.

Another person I met in college. In college, I'm more forward and socially confident. So I say hi, then we are in a in class group for work, then it becomes I give him a ride home after class. We talk a lot, and I find out he loves philosophy, is an atheist, and very well read.

I learned two things: 1, do not judge a book by it's cover. Because of the way our brains are wired, it's hard not to. Appearance is a very weak indicator.

2 (and this really sticks to me), punks tend to be in a state of adversity. In the case of my first friend, him and his family had a lot of problems. My second friend does not have a dad and is working to pay for college - his check goes straight to tuition, and it was like this entire life. Punk is an escape. Punk gives these guys space to express themselves, establish an identity, and be respected. We all want this, and they found one variety that works for them.

I've met a few who were pretty big dicks... Some of them are nice, some of them are mean. So, just like normal everyday people when you really break it down.

I was just thinking of this while I was at the grocery store wearing my patched punk jacket/camo pants/piercings, and I saw some lady in a wheelchair unable to fill a bag from the bulk oatmeal section. I offered to help her out, and she said how funny it was that out of everyone around it was the one with the Misfits back patch and septum piercing that helped her out.

Feels good man.

Where is the irony? Last I remember 'normal people' aren't judged to death by just about everyone around them that isn't one of their own. EDIT: If there is any irony, it is the irony in people judging 'punks' in being terrible, up-to-no-good, people when, in fact, most are incredibly nice and down to earth.

While driving a cab one day I picked up a guy who looked very similar to the punk in the picture(wild multicolored Mohawk)

Any of you remember that old joke...two guys on a bus and one is older and the other has bright colorful hair...the older guy is staring at the younger guy until the second guy can't stand it anymore and says "Hey man didn't you ever doing anything crazy when you were my age?"

The old guy says "Yeah about 18 years ago I got drunk and fucked a parrot and I was just wondering if you were my kid!"

OK So I was remembering that joke and formulating in my head how to best use it on this kid for maximum effect

We had been talking for a while by then but he was a pretty nice guy and I decided not to pick on him

It was a pity too because I had been waiting a long time to use that joke in real life and finally get the chance and the guy ruined it by being too nice for me to insult...darn it

I had been playing with them all night and then my grandma points out my tattoo to them, which happens to be a flower right on my shoulder. The looked at it exactly like that kid in the picture and kept rubbing it wondering if it was real.

Humanity +1

Okay well now that a few hours have passed, I'm going to go ahead and be honest. Here come the down votes. Don't get me wrong, my faith in humanity is restored when I see things like this (and it's usually on Reddit so thanks for that), but...

I knew that if I was the first one to say "Humanity +1" or "Humanity restored" or something along those lines, it would get up voted. Sure, it's only 35 points right now, but thus far there are ZERO down votes to this comment. It's just one of those automatic-upvote comments, unless you destroy it with a follow up message talking about how you purposely used an over-used comment to gain comment karma. I'm doing this for science.

Also, "So brave," which oddly enough would be a good reply to this comment, is in fact another almost overly-used phrase on Reddit. So while I'm at it, can we stop the "humanity" and "so brave" comments? They're turning into "This" and "Came to say this" type comments.

Have a nice day! :)

I really don't care what people's motivations are for recycling comments, so I don't bitch about "karma farming" or whatever. People who say "people care too much about karma" are way too concerned about karma.

Just, stop celebrating excessive unoriginality. It's not about being hip and the first to say it, it's just, don't pat yourself on the back for coming up with the same cliché time and time again.

Also, didn't downvote, didn't care about your comment. Only point I might have made would be some joke taking a pro-segregation view.

This is a great picture! I remember it being uploaded a while ago, but the picture was larger. It had more background and reactions from people if my memory serves correctly.

Here is some context from a tumblr account:

M. Lambrechts took this picture at a gay pride parade in Brussels 2009. This was a little kid of a gay couple coming to check those curious pins on his jackets He pulled the punks jacket and the punk went sitting on his knees, when the 2 men called their kid back the punk got a little kiss from the kid

I think the original file was uploaded on flickr. Does anyone know the link?
