Brb, going to go father millions of dead babies while watching Showgirls.

I assume that's from the brain cells, and not actually anything sexual.

In case it's not clear, this movie is fucking terrible. Not terrible in a fun, enjoyable, B-movie way. Just fucking awful.

masturbation.

That was me when I was like 12, trying to make out tits from this movie on the scrambled HBO channel.

It's a little different after conception...

Only a few hundred cells different.

I'll go ahead and abort those blastocysts and fetuses and put them under microscope and count the individual cells. Sound good?

[–]GORILLADIX 0 points1 point ago

Yes

[–]Cylinsier 2 points3 points ago

[–]baumkramer 2 points3 points ago

That's not consistent with what the status said.

[–]Logondo 20 points21 points ago

A seed is not a tree. An egg is not a chicken. A fetus is not a person.

That's kind of how I see it. If a woman wants to have an abortion, go right ahead. Because being the mother of a "dead child" is better than being a mother to a child you can't support.

[–]ContraPositive 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A developing human isn't a fetus until the 9th week of pregnancy, so many abortions aren't even fetuses. Fetus is, I believe, a word that is overused in American culture and may contribute to some people's dislike of abortion, since saying "fetus" draws up mental images of baby-like things rather than circle-like things or pig-like things.

[–]Logondo -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Still not a person.

[–]Kowzorz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This begets the question: when does a fetus become a person?

[–]evillozer 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When it is not attached to a host body.

[–]Say_Ocean 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So you can kill the baby while it's still attached to the umbilical cord?

Look, I'm definitely for abortion rights, but people need to realize the argument is more difficult than it seems.

[–]evillozer -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Until the cord is cut, it's just a parasite.

[–]haackedc 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would say when it can feel or recognize pain.

[–]faceplain 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree! Downvotes be damned.

Once the nervous system has developed to the point that neurologists suspect would allow the fetus to feel pain, I would like to draw the boundary for abortion.

[–]haackedc 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

However, on the other hand, this doesn't stop us from performing tests on animals. They feel pain too, although they are said to be not as conscious as humans, so it isn't as bad as performing it on humans.

Well... at such an early stage of development, even when the fetus first recognizes pain, it may not even do so at the conscious level of the animals we are permitted to perform tests on.

I know I pretty much just contradicted my previous comment... but it just goes to show that this moral debate is more complicated than it seems. I don't necessarily know what to think about either of the stances.

[–]lgodsey 0 points1 point ago

Hell, I'm fine with aborting babies up to the 1000th week after conception.

Also she clearly means "held the ability to grow into a human being a live a full lifespan" when she says "held life," not they once were able to carry out cellular functions.

[–]essenceoferlenmeyer -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then define a full lifespan. All cells have a full lifespan, all cells contain life and genetic material. Are you being selective and saying only totipotent stem cells are capable of having a "full lifespan"? That's discriminatory towards other, more differentiated cells. While the exfoliation comment is clearly faulty logic, it makes a good point - we as humans tend to be very selective about what we want to protect, idealize and romanticize. Don't make abortion something steeped in political discussion and the topic of intense discussions of morality on a fucking internet site, especially in the funny section.

Don't make abortion something steeped in political discussion and the topic of intense discussions of morality on a fucking internet site, especially in the funny section.

I'd argue the reverse: abortion is something already steeped in those things, so maybe conversations like this one don't belong in the funny section.

[–]essenceoferlenmeyer -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, but it doesn't need to be - it's one of those topics we choose to immerse ourselves in endlessly. It is a meme of politics, beaten with a dead horse. I think there's a pun in there somewhere.

[–]MeloJelo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, but it doesn't need to be

Unless you are an individual that thinks you should have the right to seek an abortion, or someone who feels strongly that you shouldn't be able to kill a blastocyst or fetus and that such an act should be illegal.

[–]essenceoferlenmeyer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My point is it's an overdone topic in politics and society, no insight will be gained from a reddit argument based off of some illogical facebook post.

[–]GORILLADIX 2 points3 points ago

Nope your epidermis skin cells arent alive. They are keratinized and dead. They were always dead, they never had a nucleus. So i can wash my face without guilt now.

[–]essenceoferlenmeyer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Philosoraptor thinks maybe epidermis skin cells are the aborted cells of the dermis...

[–]iratusamuru 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By "Full lifespan" I meant "full human lifespan," something which it is essential to even infant nature to value. A normal cell has no way of becoming an entire creature unless an egg cell is made (I don't believe they have been able to do this yet..?) or harvested and the normal cell's genetic material is removed and placed inside of an egg that has also had it's material removed.

I'm not arguing about abortion legality or fairness, that's you. I'm arguing that it is a serious matter and that woman's argument against it is callous and inhumane. I'm not arguing that the first woman was an intelligent thinker, right in her argument, or fully aware of what her argument was.

[–]essenceoferlenmeyer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be considered a living organism you don't need an egg cell, no. Some living organisms can reproduce asexually. Considering, if you'd re-read my first response here, that I was talking about the discrimination of cells, I would've thought it was obvious that the entire point of my argument was steeped in sarcasm, but apparently the overly-sensitive on reddit would rather throw around their self-righteous opinions than critically think.

[–]iratusamuru 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be considered a living organism

I'm not talking about being considered a living organism, I'm talking about being able to become a human being, the thing that you are.

The issue here is that this serious matter is being reduced to mockery. Mockery of human values (such as the difference in significance between the death of a squirrel and a person who is not valuable to you either emotionally or beneficially) is what leads nations of people to widely accept atrocities and genocide, and also what leads people to ignorantly oppose a woman's right to choose.

I know that fetus jokes are dark and funny from time to time, this is the internet and everything goes. Since this post in particular carries such an outwardly slanted argument that deeply misrepresents most pro-choice supporter's beliefs, I am compelled to express the fact that the funny behavior in this post is a miniscule magnitude of the same behavior that people use to permit themselves to own sex slaves, commit genocide, and blow up abortion clinics.

I've put a lot of critical thinking into this; if you think there is some sort of gap in my reasoning or misdirection I have taken, please, share your opinion with me on it (tried to write that where I don't sound like a douche, can't do it, but I'm serious, I'd like to understand your thoughts on the matter better.)

I'm sorry, TL;DR

[–]iratusamuru -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ok here it is

TL;DR Humans look out for each other and for a human to deny their inborn sympathy for each other (in implying asexually reproducing bacteria are as valuable to us emotionally as another human) is what leads to atrocities like the Holocaust and Armenian Genocide.

Being humorous is the underlying protective agent that allows people to hate each other without cause.

[–]essenceoferlenmeyer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you saying Hitler was pro-choice?

[–]iratusamuru 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I'm saying that Hitler didn't value human life, and saw certain humans similarly to the way someone sees a gross wart on their skin, even the way doctors see a potentially fatal skin cancer.

I am pro-choice, as I have repeatedly stated. Being okay with some women feeling unable or burdened having their fetus destroyed doesn't mean that the abortion of a pre-human should be taken lightly.

EDIT: I actually do not know whether or not he was pro-choice so I'm now compelled to investigate.

[–]essenceoferlenmeyer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That attitude is terrifying. I support a woman's right to choose whether or not to let the pre-human live, but comparing it to exfoliating?

Does anyone realize the implications of abortion being considered as standard as exfoliating mean complete revocation of all sanctity of human life other than that which you as an individual view as significant? What kind of human beings would develop from growing up knowing that if your mother had decided to get a procedure as common as a pedicure you wouldn't exist and that would mean nothing to her?

If it doesn't lead to a society of sociopaths faster than Nazi style eugenics I don't know what will.

EDIT: The squintless, forced smile of the brunette make it all the more disturbing.

[–]Boycubpiglet 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She's simply making the comparison because ultimately both procedures involve removing cells from the body. At one point both held life, now they are both dead and shed from the body. Neither have a conscience (How much do you remember of your time spent in utero?). She's not saying it should be a standard or common procedure, just saying that ultimately abortion is the removal of a cluster of cells.

Also her smile doesn't look forced or unnatural to me. You aren't legally required to squint for a smile to be genuine.

[–]Big_McLargeHuge 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't remember being age 2 either. Also, it's not like we encourage abortions once there is a separate beating heart and active brain either, when the fetus is significantly more than a cluster of cells (see Roe v. Wade. Abortion "age of viability" (ability of the fetus to live independently of the woman - which would logically include the prem babies that have lived with medical care for the first weeks)).

[–]iratusamuru 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She's not saying it should be a standard or common procedure

She is not but she is saying that it is just as big of a deal. In my opinion as a pro-choice advocate this is an inhumane perspective but everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Also I've never met anyone who doesn't squint more than noticeably at all during a genuine smile, though that doesn't mean your best picture is going to be one you were genuinely happy in.

It was just the mixture of apathy, righteousness, and the vacant smile going on really added up to a very dark picture of a human being, in my view of it.

Leviticus 17:11 - For the life of a creature is in the blood

Fetuses aren't flushed with blood until about 7 Weeks. So terminating a pregnancy before then, exfoliating your face of skin cells, or even masturbating into a sock is not considered murder by God.

Just by his zealots, many of whom haven't read his No. One bestselling self-help/thriller/horror book.

This is why I don't hang around people who want to discuss abortion, politics, or religion. Because as this post proves, they have no fucking clue what's funny. people don't understand that to make babies you need to have sex, the act of making love, they are more then just cells, but kill them if it is inconvenient for you to have a living kid in the world like we do now.
