now the real question that all of reddit is wondering is can you make grilled cheese with this?

Do you know why toasters have all shiny surfaces inside? They use radiant heat, and the more radiation that gets absorbed into surfaces other than the bread, the longer it will take to toast the bread.

There is no way this design could use radiation, since there is no place for a heating element that would be able to "see" the surfaces that need to be heated, let alone do it without "leaking" heat everywhere.

It's essentially impossible to toast bread with convection alone, even if most of the surface area of the bread weren't covered with glass.

Conduction through the glass is impossible as well. You couldn't pump enough heat through a thin pane of glass (or any material) to toast bread that was in contact with it without causing damage to the material itself, let alone through multiple heating cycles. There would also be significant heat losses through natural convection and severe safety and energy use issues.

That was nice and all, but there's an easier way to fail this thing:

Try getting the toast out without using tools, or burning your hand.

There are creative ways around that, especially if cost is no issue: spring loading, a ramp that lets it slide out, pivoting glass, etc. The heating problems are insurmountable and critical to its function.

Or you know, just tip it upside-down

if the two pieces of glass are what's heating it, then they can simply open. Like tip 10 degrees each away from each other. Grab toast.

It's concept art but it is based on the idea of using Heating Glass which is glass with a thin (transparent) layer of metal applied and heats up when current is applied. It's typically used to keep windows fog/frost free (freezer isle at the grocery, cockpit windows, etc...). Getting heating glass to safely generate enough heat to toast bread though is probablematic from my understanding so you likely won't see this anytime soon.

Grocery stores have fog-free windows? Hot damn, I must live in the ghetto - the windows in my area are always fogged up completely.

I've recently done some design work for a product using heated glass technology. Although this is a poorly designed concept (how are you supposed to get the toast out!), heated glass has been around since the 40's.

The surface is coated with thin film of tin oxide which radiates heat when a voltage is applied between two bus bars (which this concept doesn't have).

I hadn't heard of this technology until now, but my intuition tells me it has a pretty low power limitation with such a thin film. It seems more suited to slight temperature changes to combat "foggy" glass like Myrv says. Is that not true?

[–]fredt_25 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know a company called Thermique hold a patent for heated glass that can reach up to 170 degrees C. Obviously the toast wouldn't reach that temperature through radiation alone but it's enough to make toast. I haven't looked into the technology much, but I worked on project to develop an Iron using this technology. It's a bit of a gimmick in my opinion, but hey, it'll probably sell.

[–]badgerfish 7 points8 points ago

I'd still manage to burn my toast.

[–]sploogey 9 points10 points ago

this would make the world a better place. but nothing clear cunducts heat as well and as cheap as metal..

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I imagine there are people out there less concerned with cheap and more concerned with 'OMG I WANT THIS'.

How do you get the toast out with out being all awkward and Poking it to the side?

So because I'm stupid or something I read this as "I see what you did there toaster" and then I looked at the picture says "I don't" for like 5 minutes...

Eventually, someone will invent a device that is specifically designed to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich.

Then Reddit will spend its time trying to figure out how to use it...

to make toast.

[–]KyoskeMikashi 0 points1 point ago

toast looks real, everything else looks fake, but good for the toast, good for you!

Other problems aside, who wants a toaster that only toasts 1 piece of bread at a time?

[–]Umbertoecho 0 points1 point ago

i keep seeing this and think why can't they just have 4 layers of glass.

The inner 2 will have the normal metal heating element wrapped around it.

Sure it wouldn't be like the picture but it wouldn't be THAT far off.

hmm .. I do have an old toaster ... ZAP ok perhaps not.
