A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Perspective threw me off for a second, I thought the entire harbour was on top of the building.

My first thought was "A whole fucking bay on top of a roof? What's next? Are you gonna build a cruise ship to go inside of the bay on the roof?"

And then I felt like an idiot.

it'd be awesome if the entire hotel were under water and there was a bay on top. Each room would have this crazy under water view.

You are a sharp one...(un)fortunately you have now revealed two more things that most don't know. One, now you know what is the source of BBQ on streets near tall hotels in Asian countries. Two, high-end exotic resorts don' t like old people in their brochures. Welcome to SE Asia!

I hate this thing. I live in Singapore and I see it every week, taunting me. You can't get to that fucking pool unless you're a hotel guest, or use devious stratagems (e.g. show up in a robe and pretend to be a guest) that may or may not get you kicked out and shamed.

Bastards.

I used to do that at my local Marriott hotel. Skywalk from a parking garage to the outdoor pool. Worked several times, but it's not as high-end as this one.

See what I did there?

[–]mayonaise 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't live in Singapore but have been there. While pictures of this pool look nice and all, the whole structure feels wildly out of place. Aesthetics are a matter of personal opinion, but its three huge towers and strange silhouette cuts an odd space for itself into the Singapore harbor and skyline. Like a 24th century Noah's cruise-ship-ark came to rest on the shoulders of three skyscrapers. Combine that with the fact that it is basically for foreigners only, and you have a very imposing and out of place structure looking down at you every day.

Locals will sometimes stay there for a weekend "retreat", but honestly I don't know why; Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, etc are right at their back door.

[–]belligerent_bear 13 points14 points ago

Because Singaporeans have been told since birth that those places are beneath them and that in order to express their national pride they must pump every penny of their earnings back into the country. Not give it to those dirty malays.

[–]FreshPrinceOfAiur 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, as a country with no natural resources they support their own society and communities rather than neighbouring ones and are incredibly successful as a result - how thoroughly unreasonable.

[–]belligerent_bear 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Who is they? If your talking about the government then yes they have done well and turned themselves and country they reign over into a giant 1984 style piggy bank with propaganda and capitol punishment ruling with an iron fist lining their own pockets. See also: Lee Hsien loong & Goh Chok Tong owning and controlling the majority of Singapore's equity, namely Tamasek Holdings amongst many many more and the criminalisation anyone that stands against them.

But for the people? They haven't benefited, the nominal per capita GDP is around $50,000 USD but you wont be able to find a single local earning that that isn't in an intern at a foreign Bank. Foreign corporate executives that have set up HQs in the country for tax breaks and the inner circle of government beneficiaries are the only people earning a decent wage in this country, the real average wage is more like $13,000 with no rights to political change, there isn't even a god damn minimum wage. Oh and then if your not a national but working a low wage position? God help you. Indian workers are treated worse than most machinery, forced to live in shipping containers and working with no regards for safety because their lives are literally worth less than the safety equipment that would save them.

You want to talk about how unreasonable this country is? Do you how many people my friends have had to scrape off the lower decks of that building when the construction workers fell without any provided safety equipment? The whole country is a disgrace and should be shunned by the civilized world.

[–]Toava 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wages for regular people in Singapore have grown tremendously in the past 60 years, so your claim that the people haven't benefited is contradicted by reality. It's the people in Western nations that have seen wage growth stagnate over the last four decades.

As for the low-skilled foreign workers in Singapore, they CHOOSE to come to Singapore and choose to stay. If Singapore introduced a high minimum wage, like you would prefer, then those jobs would just be outsourced, and those same Indians would work at even lower wages in their home countries.

Life expectancy in Singapore is higher than every Western nation with population greater than 0.1 million, and it's a nation with no natural resources that was a third world country just a few decades ago.

The West has much higher levels of crime, especially property crime, unemployment and debt. Once you fix the Western world, then tell Singapore to adopt modern Western economic values.

[–]garyg 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the point is that the income for native Singaporeans is good, while those of temporary migrant workers is not. But keep in mind those foreign workers willingly choose Singapore by default. Singapore is simply "exporting" its factory/construction labor, not unlike what the US does. Plus, even though anyone earning only $1,000/mo. is most likely a foreign worker, those workers do get employer provided housing, etc.

The plus sides of Singapore should still be noted as well:

"Singapore is one of the most advanced and cosmopolitan cities in South East Asia with a standard of living comparable to North America and Western Europe. The city is ranked 35th in the world in the quality of life report published by Mercer Human Resource Consulting in 2002. The report was based on the evaluation of 39 criteria such as political, social, economic and environmental factors as well as personal safety, health, education, transport and several other public services. The city scored a total of 101points, compared to 106.5 points for the first placed city of Zurich." Source: http://www.usatoday.com/marketplace/ibi/singapore.htm

The plural of bullshit is not data. I've lived there for 10 years and i know i could be deported for even saying these things online.

Come around sometime and i'll show you what the quality of life is like for those out of the privileged few.

Oh and the idea that someone "chooses" to do something doesn't justify killing them by denial of safety equipment or putting a price on their routine death, respect for live is the hallmark of a civilized nation.

When we stayed at the Marina Bay Sans, my friend also had a penpal that lived in Singapore that was showing us around at the time. She was pretty excited when we took her up to the top. You can just "tailgate" other guests who go to the elevator. You have to get off the first elevator, then tailgate someone else into the 2nd elevator that leads to the skypark. Then confidently just walk to the pool area. It helps if you look like a tourist.

Edit: You can also pay for a pass if you are not a hotel guest.

When was the last time you were swimming and accidentally fell out of the pool, onto the concrete?

It looks intimidating, but that literally never happens. You'd have to intentionally jump over the edge.

[–]epenthesis 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Having been there, there's a lower level walkway that encircles the edge and juts out a good ~8 ft. Even if the edge of the pool broke, you'd fall ~10 ft at most.

[–]dirtyfries 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look further down the photo, you can see over the edge there's actually quite a bit more of the structure jutting out. It looks pretty safe.

Actually, although it looks like the pool is all the way to the edge, there's another level below it that sticks out like 2 meters farther that it does.

[–]IllGiveYouTheKey 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Two things: the edge of the pool isn't actually glass, but a standard pool wall. And just beyond that edge, there is a pretty solid ledge and walkway. Takes away from the dramatic location, but is still pretty awesome as long as you look straight ahead! Source: have been in the pool a couple of times... awwwwww yeah

Bottom of that (or at least a section of it) should have been see-through. For balls to the wall swimming adrenaline.

It's awesome. Splashed out on it for 2 nights there on our honeymoon. Worth it for the views. Awesome hot tubs on the other side looking out to see too! If you book with Singapore Airlines and do a "stopover holiday" it's loads cheaper. Gets crazy busy there during the day. We were 2 of 5 or so people there as the sun rose one morning, something I'll never forget!

Awesome staff too! There are many better hotels in the 'Pore though - just none with that amazing pool/view. You also can't fall to your death (in one go at least!) it would require more than one jump!

[–]Jakitron 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shit like this would never fly in America.. A swimming pool with an immediate drop off into death. We can't even have a goddamn bridge here in Seattle without barbed wires and tall fences that make it look hideous for the sake of keeping suicidals from jumping off it.

Then again, I don't know how you could possibly be depressed with that kind of view from a pool.

I've stayed at this hotel and been in this pool before. It's actually pretty shallow. Maybe like 4 feet deep. It's an amazing view of downtown Singapore at night though. It is a very pricey hotel, I split the room with a friend when I stayed there.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We can't have awesome shit like this in the US, because the government won't let us endanger ourselves in any way/shape/form. Hell, any windows above the 4th floor in a hotel here can't open more than 4 inches.
