Google has suggested it may have been Charles Darwin who said this; of Mathemeticians, but in fact it might go back to someone named Charles Bowen.

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Charles_Darwin

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bowen,_Baron_Bowen

"A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn't there." This is attributed, with an expression of doubt as to its correctness, in Mathematics, Our Great Heritage : Essays on the Nature and Cultural Significance of Mathematics (1948) by William Leonard Schaaf, p. 163; also attributed in Pie in the Sky : Counting, Thinking and Being (1992). There are a number of similar expressions to this with various attributions, but the earliest published variants seem to be quotations of Lord Bowen:

"When I hear of an 'equity' in a case like this, I am reminded of a blind man in a dark room — looking for a black hat — which isn't there." Lord Bowen, as quoted in in Pie Powder", Being Dust from the Law Courts: Collected and Recollected on the Western Circuit, by a Circuit Tramp (1911) by John Alderson Foote; this seems to be the earliest account of any similar expression. It is mentioned by the author that this expression has become misquoted as a "black cat" rather than "black hat."

Give Oscars fondness for re-appropriating others phrases with his own spin... this actually makes it likely he did say it.

I've studied a lot about Darwin and I'm fairly certain he never said this. I've never come across it in any of the biographies I've read, and also it doesn't sound like the kind of thing he would say.

I love Oscar Wilde, he's got some good ones, "work is the curse of the drinking class" is my favorite.

[–]Autistic_Buiscit 5 points6 points ago

Oscar Wilde is one of my favourite writers. My atheist dad is a very keen atheist, believes all men evolved equal but refuses to read Wilde because he was gay. *facepalm

Atheists can still be idiots.

I knew Oscar Wilde was fabulous, but an ATHEIST? You just made my childhood. Which is over. But still. XD

I don't want to ruin your adulthood, but he converted to christianity after his time in reading gaol.

[–]Major---deCoverley 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure he converted to Roman Catholicism on his deathbed, although he did have a sort of interest in Catholicism his whole life.

[–]Doilyn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure the Church says everybody converts on their death bed.

[–]euthyphro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My take-away from De Profundis was that he had accepted the Christ mythos, but you may be right that his "official" conversion wasn't until he was on his deathbed.

[–]TsarOfTartar 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wilde actually converted to Catholicism on his deathbed, though, but rather than undermining the point of this quote, it kinda proves it. Even a man as clever as him could turn to religion when he came face to face with the unknowable, and when he needed to answer questions that reason and science couldn't sufficiently account for.

Also he never said this quote, no one did, and the original quote this is based of is about math. Yes math.

Great photo. Reminds me of his description of Henry, leisurely enjoying an opium-tinged cigarette in the opening scene of "Dorian Grey".

[–]lordlicorice 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Huh? Somehow I never picked up that he was smoking opium.

[–]loverboyxD 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's explicitly mentioned within a few paragraphs, but easy to gloss over with the amount of description in the passage.

Lord Henry elevated his eyebrows and looked at him in amazement through the thin blue wreaths of smoke that curled up in such fanciful whorls from his heavy, opium-tainted cigarette.

Why does it matter what color anything is?

Just curious.

Edit: why the downvotes? I'm legitimately curious. The guy is blind, so why do colors matter? I just want an explanation...

[–]nickohlus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Black isn't a color. Black is a lack of color. Atheism isn't a religion. Atheism is a lack of religion.

[–]jcbkmk13 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought Atheism was a lack of belief in deities or some form of a higher power? If Atheism is a lack of religion, I'm an atheist - which I'm not. And so were all the Philosophes also atheists? No, they were deists. Atheism is not just a lack of religion.

[–]nickohlus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, you're right. I just said that because it fit better with everything else I said.

I don't think he was an atheist, he converted to Catholicism on his deathbed, and spent a lot of his life flirting with the idea.

[–]musicsucks 2 points3 points ago

spent a lot of his life flirting with little boys too. hey, maybe is was a catholic after all!

Unfortunately i think that statement would apply to a lot of things. For instance, quantum mechanics in initial studies. I am not religious, however looking for something that may not be there , or wasnt known before could be seen as innovation. or not and im dumb lol

[–]sojalemmi -1 points0 points ago

I hope you geniuses realize that Oscar Wilde's personal Hero was Jesus. He thought Jesus embodied everything good in man and the proper way to live a life. Atheist or not.

I'm sure if some random idiot came on here saying that, you would rip him apart.

Good old Oscar. There's pretty much nothing on which he lacked an opinion, and succinctly expressed in a witty aphorism.

Why is it that whenever any one of these images with a quote pops up in this subreddit, there's almost a 100% chance it is either misquoted, misattributed, or just straight up fabricated.

Shouldn't we vet these things, being skeptics and all, before just blindly upvoting it to the front of the page?

To hell with it, this happens too often. I'm just going to start reporting these types of posts.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The original is attributed to Charles Darwin, and goes like this: "A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn't there", Wilde apparently used it to express a different point.

Being a skeptic and all you could've checked for yourself if I misquoted or misattributed...

I made this image after I checked the quote, and uploaded it because I thought this subreddit would appreciate the the witty comment, so be my guest and report...

[–]loverboyxD 0 points1 point ago

Darwin's quote really seems a bit bullshitty to me. I mean, really, mathematics are largely abstract and may be somewhat arbitrary, but their applications are endless. Also, mathematicians really work with the fewest postulations possible, and derive and prove pretty much everything along the way. Darwin's contributions to science have been profound, but the nihilistic implications of this particular quote really bother me- if one thinks that way, one may as well feel the same about all the sciences- because ultimately they're all based on observation, and observation that is about as keen as that which produces mathematics.

[–]RedAnarchist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Darwin never said this either, don't worry.

[–]RedAnarchist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh really, Charles Darwin?

Could you tell me which one of his books or letters or articles I should open up to find this quote he never said?

[–]ogreatsnail 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's in Google 1:1.

Wilde was a Christian for a long time and wrote very beautiful Christian metaphors. They have nuance and tenderness that is lacking in many of his fellow religious colleagues.

This is a horrible quote/comparison. A blind person is minus the gift of sight so it would not matter what color the cat was and it would matter even less if the light was on or off.

[–]Cacafuego 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, but you see it's a black room, not simply a room with the light off.

[–]notmylion -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry (Canadian), but this is not witty at all. I am not religious so that fact has no play here for or against. I just think this statement lacks in the wit column. If anyone else other than Oscar Wilde said the same thing it would get a half-hearted chuckle. Something as complex and dense as religion deserves a witty observation with much more wit than Mr. Wilde has come forth with.
