If this was a dog, it would be clenching onto that guy and would feel forever in debt to his savior. Ungrateful cats. pff.

The dog would also have had the sense not to climb a fucking telephone pole. Cats. Pff.

I was driving home one night and I made a right turn onto a street in my neighborhood. As I was turning, I noticed a little cat safely sitting on the right side of the street. I thought nothing of it and kept driving. As I got nearer, the cat decides to fucking BOLT across the street as I pass. Needless to say, I braked pretty hard. Just one question. Why, cat? Why?

[–]JarasM 111 points112 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This was somewhere on /r/askscience awhile back. I think that consensus was that small animals like cats or rabbits basically have a fleeing response when encountering big, smelly, loud and dangerous things like lions, tigers, hippos or cars. Now, the best tactic to run away from a usual large, running animal is actually bolting in its direction - the big animal can't change its direction that quick and by the time it stops, turns and checks where the little bugger went, the critter will be far, far away.

This tactic worked soundly for millions of years, but appears quite lethal once predators became balls of metal running at tens of kilometers per hour.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

oh, interesting. I had always wondered about that!

So, if you think about it, then, it's really kind of our responsibility to NOT brake. We have to sort out their evolution somehow.

[–]TheAncient 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember another Redittor explaining wild animals often sit completely still when a predator is in the area. However, when the predator comes close and might spot them anyway, they suddenly bolt in a different direction than the predator is going. Because while the prey might not be as fast as the predator, it is often more agile, so twists and turns are a good way to safety.

I'm not sure how much this applies to neighbourhood cats and cars, but there you go.

[–]mancko 2 points3 points ago

On a vaguely related note Does anyone else's cat go in the box, take a dump, and then just RACE AROUND THE HOUSE LIKE A MANIAC?

Do they feel lighter? Is it that much of a relief? If so, why no just go a little earlier?

[–]sky4 3 points4 points ago

Local busy bodies bitch and moan to the local press and some hero decides to take an aluminum ladder up a pole and gets himself electrocuted. A father in my city did that to retrieve his daughters cat and ended up killing himself in front of his family. Terrible. I work for a utility and we always refuse to get a cat for the first day or so then if it is still there, we might send a guy to get it just to avoid the bad press.

[–]juanito89 2 points3 points ago

In fact, don't get your metal ladder ANYWHERE NEAR those power lines. They have been known to arc up to and beyond FOUR FEET.

Also have a buddy stand by with a surgical 2x4 in case your other buddy holding the ladder stops moving / starts smoking.

[–]i_cum_sprinkles 6 points7 points ago

No clue, I work in the garage so im not qualified enough to say. I do know linemen wear rubber gloves, vests, boots, stand on rubber mats in fiberglass buckets and booms. So that helps with not becoming grounded.

[–]shawnaroo 1 point2 points ago

Send one of your kids to cut the pole down with a chainsaw.

[–]drewm135 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, they don't always climb back down. A local zoo lost a lynx that climbed up too high and never got down, even after a week up in the tree

[–]nosradom 4 points5 points ago

Well in this particular case the cat could have caused some trouble. At my university, a squirrel somehow crossed two power lines causing a power outage. It would be quite shocking for the cat.

[–]bob-a-rama 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Send utility worker up there in a bucket, poke cat off with a stick. Problem solved - power stays on - cat off the pole. I don't see why people risk their lives for the sake of a cat trying to fight their way into the Cat-Darwin Awards.

[–]equalsme 1 point2 points ago

[–]dovic 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way cats claws are setup it is very hard for them to climb down, and the majority of the time it ends up in the them falling. From a height like that it would obviously injury the cat greatly if not kill them.

[–]PolarBurs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well if it came down to an imminent death from lack of water/food, or a possible death from the fall, I think you would eventually jump too.

[–]TalkativeTree 80 points81 points ago

I bet he landed on his feet. Then afterward he went to rehab, got a job, and finally met some sweet pussy to settle down with.

[–]Premaximum 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cats actually have a remarkable ability to land safely from distances above seven stories. Similar to a flying squirrel, they're capable of flattening their bodies out and sort of gliding to a safe fall.

Doesn't work every time, mind, but there was actually a study done.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1143/do-cats-always-land-unharmed-on-their-feet-no-matter-how-far-they-fall

[–]yorrick21 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah... but a couple of stories up to 7 stories is often fatal. That telephone pole is probably ~4 stories tall.

[–]Premaximum 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true. I've no idea how tall a telephone pole is. =)

[–]yorrick21 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can calculate it, if you assume that the guy is average height (5 ft 9 inches). You can then approximate the depth of the cherry-picker bucket he's standing in. Given the constant ratio of the swing-arm's length to cherry-picker bucket height, for this particular model of cherry-picker, it's a relatively straightforward calculation to derive the height of the pole.

Or can look out your window and guess.

[–]Osthato 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aren't the poles usually around 20-30 feet tall?

[–]andthisone 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Usually... So, given everything I've learned about falling cats and pole heights, I'm going to assume the cat lived. I'm leaving with this assumption, and anyone worried about the cat should probably do the same.

[–]egodeath92 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I bet he landed on his feet. Than all his legs broke from the ~20-30 foot fall and they euthanized him if he wasn't dead on the spot.

[–]uJellie 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, fuck you. I will make my own story up and live with it. He was trying to save the world by watching for danger on top of a tall pole. But when people saw him he was misunderstood, and they tried to "rescue" him. He struggled screaming in cat talk "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! I must stand here and look for villans!" and jumped out of the cart thing. He flew into the clouds, went back in time, and stopped 9/11 and hitler.

There was a QI episode where they talk about how high cats can fall and survive and also how how they can fall and survive with some injuries. That cat may be safe if it was true? I can't remember the originally clip very well

[–]zaper002 30 points31 points ago

[–]Stone_Pilot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aww no pictures

[–]falousco 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's basically that a cat falling from 3 stories has a better chance than 2 stories or something similar as it takes them time to turn upright for landing. So, this cat may well have survived with some injuries, as this looks quite high up, giving the cat enough time to land upright.

[–]Seicair 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bullshit. I remember doing experiments with my cat as a kid. Wanted to see how high off the ground she had to be if I dropped her directly on her back and still land on her feet. If I dropped her six inches off the ground she still landed on her feet. (I did use a soft surface in case she missed.) By the time I got low enough that she didn't land on her feet, it was about the length of her legs off the ground, and she landed on her side instead.

[–]merfed 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

SCIENCE.

[–]JonnyTrump 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But did you continue to raise her? Also, did you drop her straight down or throw her? There are a lot of other variables here, including how disoriented the cat is.

[–]martensitic 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's true but not because of the time it takes them to turn, which they can do from falling off a coffee table. It's because they are more likely to reach terminal velocity at 3 stories, which means they no longer experience acceleration. It's a natural response (for humans as well) to tighten their muscles when they're accelerated, thereby increasing their chances of causing significant injury to themselves. If you relax your muscles, you're more likely to survive. This is also why drunk drivers are less likely to be injured in a car accident compared to the other victims, as the alcohol relaxes their muscles.

[–]uJellie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I REMEMBER HEARING SOMETHING LIKE THIS! It has something to do with how they're always able to land on their feet. If a cat drops from a 1-2 story building it wouldn't have time to prepare for the landing, but being dropped out of a 5-7 story building it can save its ass. Thanks for reminding me and cheering me up. That being said, don't fucking test it.

[–]akn429 1 point2 points ago

My mom told me a story about when she was dating as a teenager. The guy she was on a date with was trying to show off or something and said, "You know how people say cats always land on their feet?" She says yeah and this jerkwad picks up a kitten and holds it by it's feet and drops it on it's back. Didn't end well. The date or the kitty's life o.o

If he grabbed the cat by the fur on the back of it's neck I bet it wouldn't have freaked out and jumped.

[–]dianthe 13 points14 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually you should only do that with kittens, not adult cats, with most adult cats you need to support its weight by placing your hand under its bum when holding it by the scruff. Not to mention some adult cats just really hate it and will freak out if you try to pick them up like that :P

[–]burlap_pterodactyl 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can hurt their neck by holding them like this by adults. Always have your hand under their bum, yes.

But doing some damage to their neck - as long as you're not breaking the neck or crushing their windpipe- might be worth it in emergency situations like this. Which is worse, strained muscles from being grabbed like that, or who-knows-what from falling from that height?

My dad throws one of our full grown cats by the scruff of her neck as a punishment when she bites.

[–]db0255 0 points1 point ago

Eh, always make sure you have their feet supported. If you pick them up and they have their feet dangling, they hate it.

[–]DarnTheseSocks 6 points7 points ago

This never ceases to bother me when a TV show or something references Schrödinger's cat. They all explain it like you don't know if the cat is alive or dead until you open the box. No, goddamnit. You're skipping over quantum superposition entirely. The only show I've seen that referenced it accurately was Futurama.

Without someone to observe the state it is in, the cat is both dead and alive.

I feel like this is revenge against r/aww for being on the front page so often that practically every time the site is mentioned in the media it involves cats. It would be nice if Reddit was known for something other than reposts of cats.

The man is clearly okay. He may have died years later but we don't know at this time. As for the cat (gender undetermined) we also are unsure.

[–]Admiral_Waffles 0 points1 point ago

Due to the cat's body structure, if the cat landed it's jaw or rib cage could very well could have been broken. The scapulas of cats are not attached by sockets, and when falling from a height such as this they give too much, and the jaw and ribs are the next thing that hits the ground.
