Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I have a working model of Grant's robot. All of that tedious work as a ten year old paid off when I looked into Battlebots years later.

I'm pretty sure Grant Imahara was a contestant on that once.

Adam and Jamie are a great example of how society can come to a liking for science rather than an ignorant hatred. Every kid remembers Bill Nye, he played that key step in their lives to enjoy understanding and learning. These fine folks are truly inspiring and brilliant puddin paps in a batch of mmdelicious jelloooo... Perhaps one day the puddinn zum bapity doo bahhh and the edumacation of jelloo and more puddin mm jeloo wazzzooooooo....

He just starts out with such interesting and eloquent words that I can't help but be captivated. And then he makes me question my judgement of what's acceptable writing, calling scientists pudding paps? Is that some form of endearment....?

Nope, Bill fucking Cosby.

[–]Radicality_ 15 points16 points ago

[–]igge- 18 points19 points ago

But Gradual_Nigger does it so well. I would rather call this Exponential_Cosby, since when he actually decides to take off, he takes off so quickly. Gradual_Nigger had such a beautiful turn every time.

Exactly how my thought process went. "Wait, what? ...Oh, god dammit!"

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's right, though. As much as the Mythbusters abandon scientific method to "prove" or "disprove" the theories they're assigned, they do a fine job inspiring young people to go out and discover what a marvelous and fulfilling set of fields the sciences are.

Technically, neither is Bill Nye, he's an engineer. All of them play extremely important roles as science popularizers, though. Turning kids (and adults) on to the greatness of science is a great service to science.

[–]NadaThrowaway 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

YES! Mythbusters has its entertainment value and may turn some people on to science, but they perform such little science. An extensive background in special effects production does not make you a scientist. Either way, blowing up stuff is still awesome.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]PerogiXW 62 points63 points ago

To me, Mythbusters is to Science as Star Wars is to Science Fiction.

Neither are very good at the actual science part, but they're extremely entertaining and open up an entire genre for people who wouldn't normally be interested.

[–]MadManMax55 48 points49 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's an engineering show, not science. 90% of the myths they do mainly involve testing the specific physical limitations, creation, functions, etc. of mechanical objects (or in simpler terms: breaking shit, making shit, and making shit do stuff it isn't supposed to do). When they actually do science, they approach it like an engineer would: if it works once, there's no need to test it anymore.

[–]chwilliam 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with the idea that the show is more about physical testing than simply working out if something makes sense mathematically/scientifically, but I'm going to have to take issue with:

they approach it like an engineer would: if it works once, there's no need to test it anymore.

Engineering is just definitely not a one-off thing. The whole basis of engineering existing at all is to get repeatable, predictable results. There is just so much wrong with your statement.

[–]niceville 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are specifically testing the question "Is this myth possible?". Using the proper conditions, if it happens once, then that's all you need to know that it is possible to do so. After that they do research off camera to see if there are any recorded instances of the myth, thus pushing the answer from "plausible" to "confirmed".

They always finish by blowing stuff up to show you how impossible the "busted" myths are (and because it's cool).

[–]Draffut 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would still say that they do a decent amount of science. Physics calculations, Forming a hypothesis and executing tests on that theory. It all comes back to basic science.

[–]KarmaIsCheap 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always come away from the show thinking 'you didn't disprove this myth you only proved you are incapable of proving the myth.'

couple (plural couples)

  1. Two partners in a romantic or sexual relationship.
  2. Two of the same kind connected or considered together
  3. A small number of.
  4. One of the pairs of plates of two metals which compose a voltaic battery, called a voltaic couple or galvanic couple.

No, couple has and will always mean two. That some dictionaries are of such weak fiber as to give into the general incompetence does not make the misdefinition any less incompetent. Couple is two. More than that is a few. If you disagree, I'll murder you.

"a couple of", more than two, but not many, of; a small number of; a few

dictionary.com

[–]minimizegovt 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's an idiom, the literal meaning is still two. people commonly use it to mean two or more, which is why it has become an idiom. if you look, dictionary.com also states it is an idiom.

[–]chafe 44 points45 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ALL LANGUAGE MUST BE INTERPRETED LITERALLY. NO IDIOMS ALLOWED. ZIEG HEIL!

[–]Afterburned 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's perfectly fine to use an idiom. Languages change, we need to get over it.

Science has kept Bill Nye from aging.

Talk to you doctor to see if Science is right for you. Do not take Science if you have a heart condition. Some people experienced on-stage faintiness while using science. If you experience sudden faintiness while appearing on stage, consult your physician immediately.

I had to look through the comments to find out who the guy sitting with the Mythbusters dudes was, and finally decided to investigate this Bill Nye the Science Guy gentleman whose name I keep hearing bandied about here and there in the wild world of the internet.

I wish we'd had him where I live. The only kids science TV I remember is the Magic School Bus (which I adored, but still) and a locally produced hilarity/atrocity called Suzy's World. Now I will catch up on my lost scientific childhood thanks to YouTube.

Bill Nye - He studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University, where one of his professors was Carl Sagan,[8] and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1977. .... Nye began his career in Seattle at Boeing, where, among other things, he starred in training films and developed a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor still used in the 747. Later he worked as a consultant in the aeronautics industry.

Adam Savage - He attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts for acting for six months before dropping out.

Jamie Hyneman - He earned a degree in Russian linguistics from Indiana University.
