When I was a teen, my best friend's grandfather owned a zoo. He used to walk into the large cat cages and pet them. I talked with him about it, and he said that basically the only major difference between a lion and a housecat is size: otherwise, they're much the same, behaviorally. So when a lion is well fed and cared for, mostly it will behave like a big kitty... you just have to be careful that it doesn't try to act on funny ideas that a little kitty wouldn't, like trying to drag you around by the scruff of your neck. Of course, the main difference between a large cat in a zoo and a large cat in the wild is that one in the wild is hungry and sees you as prey, one in a zoo is well fed and sees you as "part of my food delivery staff."

At the MGM casino in Vegas, every day you can see lions in a big glass enclosure playing (just like huge kitties, playing with bouncy rubber balls etc) with their keepers, who occasionally come out to answer questions. I saw someone ask them how they determine which keeper will work with which lion. The answer was, "we let the lions choose which keeper they want to work with. We find it isn't a very good idea to try to work with a lion who doesn't like you."

I like how he didn't care that the other guy was holding him back. It was personal, but it still seemed kinda playful. That guy would be dead otherwise.

[–]Saganomics 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were definitely playing. The lioness wouldn't have run over and attacked his tail otherwise.

[–]eesauce 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The lion is playing, but obviously playing rough. I think lion wasn't too impressed with the stare down that one guy gave him, so he wanted to make him run away like a scared little kitten.

[–]bhodibhodi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes.

[–]Saganomics 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's about right. There's fundamentally no behavioural difference between a house cat and a big cat. Humans can say that they've domesticated dogs, but cats just kinda hung out and domesticated themselves.

[–]themcp 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would say housecats aren't really domesticated, they're just small wild animals that are fitting in.

Not only can you see them, for a few hundred dollars you can actually get in the cage and play/pet the lion cubs.

They ship the adults in from outside of town every morning and the cubs a few times a week.

[–]twowheels 0 points1 point ago

That enclosure pissed me off. Far too small and too much concrete for those majestic animals. They don't deserve to be locked up like that.

[–]themcp 0 points1 point ago

They spend a couple hours in there a day for a few days out of each month, and then they spend the rest of their time in a large outdoor preserve. I asked.

I don't know what I have done with the picture but when I was a kid (probably around 15 years ago I would guess), I got to hold and feed a baby tiger at our state fair. It was one of the coolest things ever.

[–]notanotherpyr0 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most well fed big cats don't consider healthy adult humans a viable meal. While they could probably kill the human we would also seriously wound the cat so they would rather let both sides be. Watch a tiger or lion at the zoo though and you will see them stare down every kid and old person who are far easier meals.

[–]notMrNiceGuy 1 point2 points ago

What could we possibly do to a lion without the use of knives, spears or guns? Pull its fur?

[–]sparr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Break its tail. Club its ears. Gouge its eyes. Yes, the human would obviously lose, but why go after 200 pound prey when 10-50 pound prey is trivial?

[–]notMrNiceGuy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The average man isn't 200lbs, and I doubt that the average person would be thinking clearly enough to break the tail or reach past its mouth to its eyes.

[–]sparr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but the lion doesn't know that we are weak. We look like larger-than-average prey, so they treat us as such, all else being equal.

[–]notMrNiceGuy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fair enough.

[–]notanotherpyr0 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How the hell does gouging an eye not occur to you? Eyes are soft squishy and vital to the survival of almost every predator and unless the lion snaps your neck in its initial lunge your body will instinctively reach for weakspots(eyes, ear, nose, and throat are all sensitive vital and vulnerable) With adrenaline you could rip an ear off, break a hyoid bone or something else a lion definitely doesn't want to deal with for the rest of their life. Gazelles don't have many ways of fighting back and rely and numbers and running away as do most herbivores so most predators simply take the path of least resistance for food which never means fighting something that is also made to kill things. Humans muck up things because we got so good at killing stuff we disrupt the natural order by killing our rivals in huge amounts and killing breeding age animals because they are the best combination of tasty and amount of food but seriously impact the reproduction rate of a species.

The most tennis balls held in the mouth by a dog is five - Augie, a golden retriever owned by the Miller family in Dallas, Texas, USA, successfully gathered and held all five regulation-sized tennis balls on 6 July 2003.

[–]Loneytunes 0 points1 point ago

The lion doesn't need to roar into the mic. Odds are that's an early omnidirectional microphone or something similar that can pick up a wide range of sources. Also odds are that since that's a trained lion, if it can look at the camera and roar it can also be picked up on a microphone fairly easily.

[–]Bob3333 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, think of how it would suck if the lion roared while not pointed directly at the microphone - they'd just have 15 seconds of silence on wax.

sometimes when people suffer trauma to the brain they recede into a coma and are unable to Wake Up. Survivors of this catatonic state have described noticing subtle clues to their condition in a imagined world they inhabit in order to Wake Up.

These clues can be as simple an obvious as the sky being green or purple, clearly showing that the imagined world is a fabrication, enabling the sufferer to clime to conciousness and Wake Up. Other times it's as simple as an inability to run, walk, or speak properly that gives them the clue to Please Wake Up Bill.

[–]aveganliterary 9 points10 points ago

Cute semi-related tid-bit. The Mary Tyler Moore company has a kitten "roaring" as their logo (in a nod to MGM). Apparently it was rather difficult to get said kitten to do the right motion, so they waited for it to yawn, then reversed the footage and added the noise. Instant (incredibly adorable) roar.

[–]GuybrushMightyPirate 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Comment: Lately, I've heard a neat Urban Legend about the MGM Lion's roar.

It goes that the lion was originally meant to be standing proud and silent, but roared when two burglars rushed into the warehouse.

The burglars in question were Boris Regina and Karl Maninovsky.

Supposedly, Regina and Maninovsky would regularly rob banks and stash their loot at a warehouse a few blocks away.

One day, while their warehouse was normally empty, MGM and their lion were recording. The lion roared at Regina and Maninovsky, after which MGM stopped recording.

The lion then jumped off the platform and mauled Maninovsky, who died two days later. Regina ran out of the warehouse and got run over by a police car heading to the bank he had just robbed."

source - snopes

Are you sure this isn't what you're talking about?

[–]CarlWeathersRightArm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It very well might be, I'm not sure though. The rumor I heard was that a trainer was mauled, but it could have been a burglar. I hope that your story is the correct version as it seems more interesting than mine.

The best thing /r/movies could do right now would be a ban on posting anything to do with the Big Six media corporations.

That means no movies by Universal Studios, Touchstone, Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar Animation Studios, 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Blue Sky Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures, Castle Rock, New Line Cinema, or Paramount Pictures. Don't give their produce free advertising.

Instead, /r/movies could promote truly independent film making.

(Of course, this won't happen. The masses will continue to give money to the corporations, and the corporations will use it to lobby for legislation that will have an adverse effect on the masses. And the corporations know that.)

In the late 70's, early 80's, they used to keep a few lions at the MGM casino in the back in cages in trailers (back when the MGM was where Ballies is now). You could take pictures with them near the movie theater.

They would pull them out of a cage and literally poke them with a stick until they roared for your picture. Outside of the cage, no leash, no chain, no big guy with a whip or a gun standing nearby. Just a minimum wage guy with a stick, and another minimum wage guy with a camera.

All the pictures I ever got were of me screaming and crying (I was in elementary school at the time). I was determined at one point to brave it out, but as it turns out around the same time one of the lions killed a trainer and they ended the program.

I always thought the lion in the MGM logo was laying down, kinda like this guy.

Also, I think the MGM logo lion has a shorter mane.

I once heard from one of those bullshit urban legend sites, that leo the lion mauled 2 bank robbers who decided to hide in the warehouse where this was being filmed and this was the reasoning as to why the lion roared. MGM wanted a regal looking lion.

Interesting fact, the day after the lion killed someone.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't seem to confirm it, but there's a great urban legend about how the lion was never meant to roar, but instead just sit there dignified and proud. Coincidentally, two men had just robbed the bank accross the street, and were going to escape into the usually empty warehouse, the same one that MGM just happened to be shooting their logo in that day. The lion supposedly roared three times and lept from its pedistool, mauling one of the robbers, who died in a hospital three days later. The other ran out into the street, scared out of his wits, and were hit by a police car on the way to the scene of the crime. He was killed instantly...i guess the idea of it is interesting enough.

A guy who used to work at MGM from the late 60's to the early 80's told me they'd get the lion to roar by pulling its tail.

If that's true, there must have been more protection for people nearby than that.

[–]BunnyPenny 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is not the MGM lion. Well it could be, but this has got to be a publicity shot, and definitely by the shot used for the Metro Goldwyn Mayer logo. The lion in the clip is "lion" down hehe, and his shoulder is visible to the left. The lion in the clip also has shorter mane along the brow and ears than this one. It's possible this is the same lion, but it's not the same shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mqVvEaQefk&feature=youtube_gdata_player

This is very bizarre. Last night, I watched The Philadelphia Story, and at the opening MGM slate, I thought, "I remember seeing a picture of the making of that logo on Reddit. I bet someone will post it soon. I'd like to see it again."

So, thank you.
