I work at an aquarium and we have one a bit bigger then this little guy. He's very friendly and often gets belly rubs from the divers! Sometimes I'll see him sitting by the glass partition between the large shark habitat and his habitat just staring at the sharks swimming by. Kind of like a cat watching people walk past their window.

I got to guest (pay $$ to) dive in the Baltimore aquarium and I wish I was closer so I could volunteer to do your job. Aquarium divers have so much fun. During my dive the little puffer basically followed me around the entire time. (S)he beat me in an adorable staring contest.

Yes....found one so docile in the Intracoastal down here in So. Fla. that I could actually touch it, pick it up, and show it to my son without it puffing up on me (quickly put back in the water of course)

Now I'm missing my puffers. I had 2 brackish tanks where I kept Figure 8 puffers and gobies.

Puffers are high maintenance, but they are pretty close to having a puppy that lives underwater.

[–]I_wwebsite 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know exactly what you mean. There are very few fishies as attentive to the "outside world" as these little guys. Mollys are probably up there too. You can walk into a room and they start fluttering around the glass to say "hi." Plus the fact that puffers swim like slow motion bumble bees adds to the cute awesomeness.

I used to give mine live brine shrimp once a month. He LOVED it. He was like a crack head when I fed him those.

[–]fxpstclvrst 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We had 6 figure eights as well in a tall hex tank. They had so much fun chasing one another through the vertical bubbler currents and around the plants. So cute, so awesome to watch. We fed them freeze dried shrimp, and the puffers got to where they'd take them out of our fingers.

[–]figureeight 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to the recommended conditions by people who have kept them very long term (up to 18 years), any size hex tank I am aware of is too small for 6 Figure 8s. Freeze dried shrimp(or krill) as their main food is a poor diet for them. I'm assuming you bought the puffers at a local store and followed their inaccurate care recommendations.

This isn't directed at you, but people as a whole tend to not learn about the animals they want to keep as pets before they buy them. This happens especially with fish, and chain stores outright lie about their care (they are treated as disposable).

[–]fxpstclvrst 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I figured talking about them in such detail would get criticism of how we kept them. This was about six years ago now, but I believe their tank got a mix of flake food, pellets, and frozen worms as well as shrimp. They died several months into our care. My boyfriend and I were new to fish keeping at the time, and though we'd kept plecos and catfish (loved our striped raphs) and barbs in our other tank for a while, we didn't really know what we were doing with the puffers. It broke our hearts to see those happy little guys go, and we figured we didn't do a good job of maintaining the water, so until we sold our tanks last year, we kept only freshwater fish.

[–]figureeight 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This happens all the time with fish. It's not so much criticizing you as it brick and mortar stores treating them as disposable and either giving no information on their care or misinformation. I assumed from the start this is what happened and you can't really blame someone for not knowing that what they are told is wrong.

My first puffer died within a month. I started reading about them to figure out why he died. Because that puffer died, I learned how to actually care for them and how stores treat fish as disposable.

Figure 8 puffers and pea puffers do just fine in regular water as well, I've found them to be on par with maintenance of any regular tropical fish. They're cool as hell though

[–]figureeight 0 points1 point ago

Figure 8 puffers... do just fine in regular water as well

This really isn't true long term. You can read much more about their care at thepufferforum. They can live around 18 years. In FW they are more vulnerable to infection and parasites. They are classified as brackfish everywhere I know of besides chain stores (they will say anything to make a sale). If they are treated as disposable, then yes FW is fine.

I've found them to be on par with maintenance of any regular tropical fish. They're cool as hell though

I don't know of regular tropical fish that need specific foods to keep their teeth from overgrowing. Puffers do not eat the same foods and need much cleaner water than most tropical fish. A brackish tank is the main reason they are high maintenance though.

I love puffers .. I would have one in my tank but its set up reef at the moment, but I work at an aquarium store and we do service calls to people in town and I have a funny story. It was like my third or fourth day working here and I had just moved to town to go to school. I was training with my boss and we were at a guys house working on his 600 gallon predator tank that had a huge porcupine in it. All puffers have the I dont give a fuck personality and while all the other fish would hid when you work messing with the tank they just wanna stay out and see whats going on. My boss said that if I stuck a finger out at him he would bite it and that I should try it. Being one for adventure I gave it a try. It just sat there looking at my finger for a full minute and I was starting to think maybe it wasnt going to happen so I looked away to tell my boss he wasnt going to do it and thats when it attacked as if it knew what it had the element of surprise. With out thinking I reacted by quickly pulling my hand out of the tank but the little bastard held on and let go after my hand was fully out of the water, and as you may know it is extreamly dangerous for puffers to be out of the water if they decide to puff up. Well the little guy fell to the floor with a thud from about 5 feet and onto some towels we had on the floor. Me and my boss quickly reacted with panic and a lot of surprise we couldnt just pick him up because hes spines were sticking to the towel like velcro so he grabed the whole towel and threw it into the water so if the puffer did puff he wouldnt get filled with air. We were then able to untangle him and he still lives to this day, and that is the story of my first "oh shit" moment working with aquariums.

[–]omahad 3 points4 points ago

I've owned a few of these guys and I loved them. They have the personality of a puppy. They always are happy to see you when you get home. They're kinda mischevous, and extremely gluttonous. They'll even sit in your hand. I had two of mine trained to spit water (about 2 feet) out of the tank before I'd feed them by hand (holding the food about 3" aove the water so they'd jump out and grab it.) Nothing but love for the porcupine puffers.

I was vacationing in Long Beach Island and thought I'd try my hand at net fishing (While fully intent on releasing my catches). First try I catch about thirty minnows, three of the biggest blue crabs I've ever seen, and one of these guys. He couldn't have been more than three or four inches. When I picked him up he would fill with air and puff his chest out. Really cool experience.

[–]whatpineapple 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you ever catch a puffer again, please don't lift it out of the water.

All the puffers types I know, fill themselves up with water. If they get filled up with air instead, they often can't deflate themselves easily and have a pretty unpleasant time.

If you ever go diving Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi in Thailand you'll often go to Koh Ha. It's a lovely series of islands out in the middle of nowhere.

In the Koh Ha lagoon you will find a porcupine puffer fish called Porkie that's exceptionally friendly. He's so famous he even has his own facebook page.

I've seen him quite a few times and he absolutely loves divers, so much so that he often gets in the way. I was doing my rescue diver final practical which involves bringing up an unresponsive diver. Porkie was hanging around and when I grabbed the diver I almost squashed Porkie in between the diver and the bottom.

Managed to shoo him away and he faithfully followed us back to the dive boat :) Heading back there in February and I'm sure I'll be seeing him again.

As a fisherman in Australia, no. These things are a blight, like the rabbits of the sea.

I used to scuba dive a lot and I remember I spent one entire dive. A good 40 minutes, playing with one of these guys and trying to get him to puff up. It seems to be very difficult to scare them enough to get them to go into defensive mode. 40 minutes and that little bastard never did puff. Grrr.
