"Hang on, I'm going to kick this kid."

[–]crownedsparrow 448 points449 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My only question is...why?

[–]Lazar_Taxon 577 points578 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The consensus is that the guy has some sort of mental disability (the woman at the counter is his handler), and he kicks the kid because he's startled.

Apparently you can if he kicks your kid..

[–]LordRusty 55 points56 points ago

Or if he's trying to kill you with boxes...or trying to hurt anyone in general. Why is it wrong to defend yourself against a disabled kid?

I don't care if someone's retarded or not, if they're threatening me, I' m going to fight back. It's not "Oh, he doesn't know it's wrong, so I'm going to let him throw shit at me", it's "He's throwing shit at me. I'm going to make him stop."

Back when I was in high school I had a friend who got suspended over this. We'll call him Steve.

A...we'll say mentally disabled young gentleman walked by and slapped his girlfriends ass. Steve told him that if he ever did that again he would get his ass kicked. So the guy walked straight up to her and did it again.

Then Steve punched him in the face and got suspended.

On the other hand, I'd be scared thinking "FUCK! This kid is retarded, he might do something crazier than any normal person would!"

Agreed, any parent worth their salt defends their kids against others regardless of the offenders age, race, creed OR mental state. That said, solid punch.

Or size. I remember my 5'6" dad knocking some 6'4" dude's lights out when I was about 5 years old because the guy shoved me out of his way on the sidewalk, making me fall onto a bicycle on the side of the road. He didn't even check if I was okay or confront the guy verbally, just klocked him right in the face, said "thats for pushing my son," helped me up, brushed the dust off, took me by the hand and kept walking like nothing happened. That was the end of that. Obviously left a lasting impression. Hopefully on that jackass, too.

I was at Dairy queen once, standing there waiting for my blizzard to be made. A father and his kid were standing there for their food as well. When my blizzard came out, the lady set it on the counter for me, and the kid went to reach for it. The dad stopped him and said "Don't touch a man's ice cream son... That's how you get hit"

Your comment reminded me of that day. Have an upvote.

I witnessed a similiar experience in high school. Autistic kid named Kurt had one of those wheelie backpack - you know, the one's with the extending handle - and was antagonizing some other kid, a pretty sizeable jock. Huge guy, really. For no reason at all, Kurt picked up his backpack by the handle, and swung it like mace at this other fella's head. The guy dodged it, but ludged forward towards Kurt, punched him square in the face, and knocked him out cold. Kurt fell backwards like a falling tree into a library bookshelf, followed by an avalache of books.

Poor David. I thought this looked like him when I first saw it. I remember the kids used to dare him to go steal people's pizza in the cafeteria and watch their reaction. Yet another mark on the wonderful reputation of Paris, TX. sigh.

Oh my god there was a kid like that at my primary school. Except he was in year 6 (the top year) when I was in year 3 (the bottom junior year) so it was even more scary. There were two main ways of leaving the building to get into the playground at lunch time and he would stand in one of the corridors blocking any kids from going past. And if you pissed him off he would just boot you in the shin. Fuck me I had forgotten about all of this.

[–]TrustyGuy 14 points15 points ago

Autistic sounds more likely. My sister works with autistic kids and they get downright violent sometimes.

[–]total_looser 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i understand the spectrum aspect of autism. but i'm wondering, for the standard deviations, do they learn after enough ass kickings that they should probably not strike out at other people?

b/c i know some autistic kids, and i can just see the ass kickings in their future.

[–]dagis13 10 points11 points ago

Brother of autistic kid here.

No the do not understand evenutualy after an asskicking. we used to mess with him ALOT before we knew he was autistic. When he gets mad he just snaps, and it's really hard to calm him down again.

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points ago

This was posted a few months back. The guy who kicked the kid is autistic and the woman at the counter is his caretaker. The dad didn't face any serious charges in the end.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Serious charges? You mean the guy got in some kind of trouble for this? For the love of science, if you're out in public and someone starts assaulting your small child, it better be legal to physically defend them!

[–]Zyleth 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm certain the guy didn't face charges. He did however apologize for striking the guy in a video i saw when he found out he was autistic. All he saw at the time was someone attacking his kid and acted accordingly.

As a former 1:1 aide, no, this was hugely her fault. You have to know your charge. 100% guaranteed, this individual is a violent person in general. Autistic people don't all of a sudden become violent--and you more often than not see an outburst coming if you know what you're doing. If his needs are enough to warrant having a 1:1 aide, then her attention needs to be completely on him, not her order. She should have seen that coming. Ten to one, the kid wasn't what pushed him over the edge. It was the call, or he was having a rough day, and the little boy annoyed him, and was smaller than him, so he got kicked. They shouldn't have been in the McDonald's at all.

(Someone who worked with many different ages and abilities, and levels of violent tendencies, for years in the general population and never had a violent outburst that affected anyone else. )

[–]drsideburns 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a former cargiver, I completely agree with this. I've had a client escalate while grocery shopping. I've had a client escalate in public, at the park, and at the YMCA... I did my job and deescalated before it became a problem.

[–]Death_To_Your_Family 30 points31 points ago

Even if he is mentally disabled, he has to learn that shit like this can happen in the real world, even if it's not necessarily right. If he is capable of going out to a fast food place where there are kids and people running around, then he has to be "able" enough to know that he can't just go and hit/kick someone else. If he can't abide to that, then he shouldn't be out around people in the public.

Along with other kids, who were in the same situation we always had one goal: to finish building a Lego airport before the Special Ed (95% of kids had Down's) class bursts in, trash the place and beat us up (well it was more of a random swinging, but still hurt).

Now the funniest thing: At that time what occupied my mind was 50% Warcraft 2 and 0% chromosomal aneuploidies, so I was absolutely convinced that those huge, chubby, often bald, drooling kids were young Ogres.

Because in my experience nobody ever penalizes people with down syndrome for hurting other people. So they probably don't exactly see what's so wrong about it.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i've never understood this mentality. sure we give them a 'get out of shitty situation free card' for pretty much everything. but when you hit someone you're somehow supposed to let it go because they are 'challenged'. no, words are one thing. but the gloves come off when there is violence, no mental disease can save you from that. especially when its a god damn child.

[–]Quis_Custodiet 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Many Down's sufferers are effectively, if not literally, children. In some cases, they can be considered no more guilty for hitting someone than a 6 year old is. They can be told it's wrong, but they're hardly going to grasp the intricacies of contextual morality.

According to some commenters, having Down's is a justified reason for kicking a child. Sorry, the man got what he deserved. +1 to pop.

Yet another miscommunication. Pointing out the fact that he has downs is not meant as a way of excusing what he did, but rather explaining how the situation came about and absolving him of our assumptions. Without that context, you would watch the video and assume the guy was simply a racist asshole or something. Our judgement of this individual depends not just on the physical act itself, but the intent behind it. One does not excuse the other, but it still an important factor to keep in mind.

[–]reasonable_force 70 points71 points ago

Having Down's syndrome and being a racist asshole are not mutually exclusive.

My fiance takes care of retarded adults (not elusively exclusively) and they can definitely be very racist. If their parents were Bible thumping, racist, hate-pigs then that is exactly what their retarded offspring are going to be. There's a certain point in our lives when we stop being children who blindly take our parent's words as law. Retarded folk just don't mature to that point.

This politically incorrect segment was brought to you free of charge. Have a wonderful evening.

this is so true. i had some learning disabilities as a kid, so i had to go to a school filled with TONS of mentally challenged kids. this was my entire middle school experience. i learned a few things then. one was the pure liquified concentrated HATE these people can have. i mean i heard, and experienced such unfiltered raw racism/anti-semetism. also these people may be challenged, but that does not mean they are stupid. i knew kids with all kinds of problems, from mild aspergers to full blown autism, and anything else in that rainbow. and they all knew you can just 'get away' with things and blame it on their mental diseases. these guys were the most evil and brilliant manipulators i've ever seen. when there are such blatant efforts to be kind and understanding of their conditions they take full advantage, holy hell.

but back on point, yeah these guys don't have filters. and its just disgusting the things that are said when your brain doesn't have a 'shit is so horribly fucked up STOP IT' filter. and there gets to be a point where no disability can save you from the ass beating you deserve. i did fight quite a few retards throughout middle school, but boy did they deserve it. and a few could fight, i will give them credit for that. but i found 'retard strength' just isn't true.

anyways, thats my rant about nothing.

No one is claiming it's a reason. It's an explanation which (may) provide an exculpation. Since we only have a few seconds of a gif, we really don't know for certain.

People seem to have the misconception that people with Down's can't be assholes. Having worked with quite a few special needs students, they are exactly the same as the rest of the population. They have their nice ones and their dickish ones. It doesn't take them long to figure out which people will punish them for acting out and which will coddle them indefinitely.

[–]ma5haga 61 points62 points ago

No kidding. Even people with Down's can learn from a little behavioral conditioning.

If there are any psychologists and/or other professionals who work with mentally disabled people reading these comments -

Would the autistic man "learn" anything from the punch he received? Or is it just to difficult to know without knowing the severity of the mental disability the man has?

[–]justskidding 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Autistics can learn perfectly fine. They may not communicate, though. But most often it's the idea of "putting oneself in other people's shoes" that's the hard part for low-functioning autistics.

[–]OJ_287 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, ok, (if he is autistic) does that inability "to put oneself in another's shoes" cause people with autism to not be able to associate their actions with the reactions they receive? I guess what I was getting at was, would the autistic man associate the punch he received with his action of kicking the child and thus "learn" that he probably shouldn't kick small children because that angers people to the point of violence? Does that make any sense?

This is hard. My dad has dementia. He used to just pick up a burger or food at a gas station and just start munching away like it was totally cool. If it wasn't for my mom he probably just would have walked out the store. I expect an unaware cashier or store owner to call the police had he just walked out. I also expect the police to understand and allow me or my mom to pay for what he ate and that would be the end of it. I don't think he would have, but had he done this I would be torn between his cognitive disability and the fact that he kicked a child (even if he is one himself). In the end I would be understanding of the dad, and realize that I could no longer take care of my dad safely. Thus is life.

There was a kid like this in my elementary school. He would always say "dish dish dishhhh" (more of a "dshhhh" really) and scream a little bit. If you looked at him and said "dish" he would go berserk. Some kids once cornered him in a stairwell that lead outside; and they said "dish" over and over, so much that he ran headfirst into the door and cracked the window. He was fine, but still...

We laughed for months. Kids are horrible.
