Why would you be torn? Read the petition. If you agree with what's being proposed, sign it. If you don't, don't sign. Peer pressure shouldn't come into it.

Peer pressure is a large factor in many religious rallies where some people there are forced to go, for example, teenagers being made to go by their parents.

Let's say a church group goes to a christian youth rally and a closet athiest has to tag along because his or her parents make him or her go. He or she is going to have a hard time not doing certain things because he or she doesn't really want to basically express his or her non-faith as an athiest in a room of hundreds of god-fearing asswipes. I'd certainly hate to be in that situation.

Yeah that actually happened to me at church once when I was a kid. I got lots of concerned and dirty looks when I wouldn't sign an anti-choice petition.

Yeah, I went to a lock in at a church when I was younger because a friend who was really into church asked me to.

It was pretty fun, but then they had us all circle up, and started preaching. I was still on the fence then as to my beliefs. They eventually asked us if we wanted to be saved, or do we want to suffer in the afterlife?

They said, that those who want to be saved can come into this room, where they would perform a ceremony to save them. I thought long and hard about it, but decided to stay where I was. I was one of the only ones to do so.

From that point on I was an atheist.

EDIT: Felt I should clarify that I thought it was all BS, but peer pressure is pretty strong at that age. I wanted to go with everyone just so I wasn't left there, with everyone knowing I didn't want to be saved.

I know how it feels. I wish I could've asked my youth leaders a few questions that I know now that would've got their minds all boggled. Like why the christian god doesn't like gays. There isn't really a reason. A good one, anyway.

But I don't want the cool kids to think I'm a square.

Funny, in that episode he was dealing with a religiously related issue too (Jews vs. Palestinians vs. good chicken)

Maybe it's because it's 2 AM where I live, but I laughed like a motherfucker watching this. Still am! Holy shit, thank you.

It is really easy to tell people no. There are folks on campus all the time asking for signatures for various things. I listen, I process the information and I make a decision. I have no problem saying no, because if people are offended by it they don't really understand the concept of a petition.

Yeah, they're asking you to publicly endorse a cause... if you don't believe in it, or if you feel you need more information before deciding, you're under no obligation to support it.

What is there to be ambivalent about? The answer should be not just "no" but "fuck, no."
