[–]Unreliable_Source 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't be surprised if the protest leaders were encouraging people to bring their children out. This is a classic Gene Sharp "From Dictatorship to Democracy" tactic which attempts to befriend the police instead of ostracizing them. Peace offerings like this are one of the many ways they accomplish that goal.

[–]SenorFreebie 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It also discourages trouble makers when it's a family atmosphere. Not many people want to provoke the police when they know kids could get caught up in it.

[–]arachnophilia 12 points13 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i'm gonna break with consensus and risk fueling the wrath of the hivemind, but i actually sorta like how they changed the ending.

this coming from someone who read the comic first. the movie's version was much tigher, made more sense within the story arc, and didn't introduce a completely weird and random event. it tied up dr. manhattan's part of the story much more neatly, too.

[–]KnightyKnax 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like the movie, and the first half of it was really good, it's the second half I find a bit silly. Nonetheless, I still liked it, which is more than I can say about Drive, which in my opinion suffers from the same problem.

[–]arachnophilia 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my biggest problem with watchmen is that it was like 95% fanservice. it wasn't really as good as the comic, but it didn't really stand on its own. so if you watched it not having read the comic, you spent most of the movie going "what?" and if you had read the comic, you spent most of the movie comparing it.

[–]KnightyKnax 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't really have a problem with it, I was a bit confused at first, but I think I understood most of what was going on (I haven't read the novel), but I just feel that from this it all just went downhill.

[–]arachnophilia 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was a bit confused at first ... (I haven't read the novel)

sorta what i was getting at. the comic is all over the place, but it works well for the comic form. in the movie, it's a little bit hard to follow, unless you've already internalized the comic.

but I just feel that from [1] this it all just went downhill.

maybe. it's been a while since i've seen it. but the bit right before that was probably the best part of the whole comic, and not quite executed as well in the movie.

[–]dangerous_beans 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. The movie ending makes more sense in context and all around feels "tighter" than the comic ending. Not to mention that in terms of the long con, movie!Adrian's plan is easier to maintain than comic!Adrian's.

[–]JediDwag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also read the comic first, and I don't think the move was better.

I do that the movie took the same characters, setting, and general idea for a story, and make it into an enjoyable movie, but I don't think it should be considered the same story as in the comics.

The comics had much more detail, many more subplots, more minor reoccurring minor characters, and the ending was completely different.

[–]arachnophilia 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

oh, i didn't say i thought the movie was better; i don't. i think their choice for the ending was better. that's really about it. in pretty much every other way, the comic was superior.

[–]JediDwag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh, I think the ending was different. It was better for the movie because it made it so they could just ignore the subplots specifically related to it, but the ending in the comics had that mysterious build up which was part of the experience of the story.

What I found a bit troubling about Watchmen is they try to portray the opening sequence as an alternate reality (Nixon getting extra terms etc.) but in that scene, it gives the impression US soldiers didn't fire on civilian protestors.

They did. Repeatedly. So did police. And that's before you get into the amount of Vietnam protestors that died in custody. This; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmEHcOc0Sys Is an example of a good individual ... but the exception, rather then the rule.

[–]jonnie5 86 points87 points ago

I get the sense a lot of you see this as a stark juxtaposition of the coldness of conformity and the innocence and idealism of love.

I dont like either of your interpretations.

I see it as a symbol to convey the notion that we are all humans from the same tribe. Even though the authority does its hardest to show that the authoritarian enforcers are different. Almost like mythical beasts. This simple act of the soldier accepting the heart and displaying it says to me "Don't worry, I am one of you, I will not harm you though I may look like like I will".

I find this an interesting thought but do not agree.

Edit: I read this as humanising the protestors, ‘look we are not an out of control mob we are peaceful loving people that wish to express our dislike of (whatever the issue is for any protest)’. I know that people who have done riot control have expressed that they often failed to see the person and just saw a mob.

When I have been on demonstrations I have always tried to engage the police in conversation and always been positive and polite. It is harder for some people to hit you over the head after they discover common ground.

[–]zombozo[S] 62 points63 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is happening right now in Bucharest

"After having bought food for the night, a gendarme asks two citizens to wait by a street corner. After they rally around 30 people they call in a army truck, load the people in, those who refused were forcefully thrown in, and drive them to a police station. These people were never charged with anything, some of them were beaten up at the police station for "asking too many questions" and then forced to sign a paper that said they were protesting violently in a different part of the city. Throughout their "processing" they were regarded as meat."

[–]ownworldman 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh yeah, sure, they are all peaceful nice protesters and police beats them for fun.

Like the picture here, of people responsibly taking pre-school kid to a place of possible violence, sharp heavy flying objects or tear gas cans.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First of all to settle this straight they're not 'army trucks' more like police riot vans- the military is not on the streets. Secondly these people have done nothing to incite the violence. It was originally intended to be a peaceful protest towards a corrupt and oppressive system that took apparent pleasure in suffocation its workforce.

But like any other gathering there will always be a couple of anarchists that pick new and creative ways to express their boredom. That's what started it, technically.

Thirdly, after a few days of peaceful protesting the gendarmes were instructed to 'clear the streets by any means necessary'. So they did, tear gas and batons blazing with the intent of fucking everybody's day up. The op is right, they arrested/detained without reason, provocation or legal backing anyone they could. They took information and processed them with the quote 'intent of forming a database of offenders'. I've seen people being sacked to the ground for no reason, hoisted and hurled in paddy wagons. And a few days after this I have also seen idiots ( quote 'soccer supporters' I shit you not that's how these little assholes identified themselves ) retaliating with rocks and molotov cocktails. A cameraman was set on fire by one of these idiots.

The picture you're looking at is after the violence died down, after the government declared that the gendarmes are surprisingly getting a raise in salary for participating, and that it was revealed that among the protesters there are strategically placed antagonists that incite to violence.

[–]Craighenn 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There, right there what you say, is in stark contrast to the sentiment reddit was feeling months ago towards Occupy. But in Bucharest it's much easier to assume the protesters deserve it.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Occupy was more of a sit-in than a protest.

[–]FreshPrinceOfAiur -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some of us thought occupiers deserved it when those among them decided to have a go at arson and then refused to disperse to leave only the arsonists and rioters, thereby acting as human shields for them.

Most of us have no opinion on Bucharest's protests, but until we see them getting gunned down systematically we're hardly going to support rioters of any variety.

I passed through riots daily when I was a kid.

Sometimes it's not a choice.

Someone who lives there. Someone who's trying to get away from there. Someone who genuinely thought they were going to have a peaceful political rally. Someone who has been backed into a corner by the government and can't feed their kid (let alone pay a carer).

Or maybe just someone who wants to educate their kid on the reality of power structures.

Perhaps somebody who cannot afford a sitter, and who does their best to keep their child safe while they try to make a better future for them, takes their kid to a protest.

zombozo, stop misinforming reddit. The so called "riots" in Bucharest are a joke, organized in part by the opposition parties. Those who go out in the streets (during work days, mind you) are terribly misguided (except inciters from PSD/PNL and football hooligans). Instead of looking for jobs (of which there are plenty of) they found this opportunity to "protest", even if none of them actually know what they are protesting against. I even heard a college graduate saying that he was looking for a job for FOUR MONTHS and he couldn't find one, so he found it more useful to chant against the President. I looked for half a year before finding a job, and I did. Stop blaming others for your incompetence. If you look at the actual data (for example these interactive graphics from The Economist: http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/05/europes_economies ) you would see that Romania is far from being the most affected economy in the EU. So stop bitching and get to work.

There was a very nice and similar photo taken during the Russian Coup attempt back in 1991, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find it since then.

Demonstrators had thrown flowers over the tanks that had been dispersed around the Kremlin, and in the photo the tank commander had popped his head out his turret and he had a very poignant look on his face. You could tell he was wondering what on earth he was doing there.

I saw that photo more than 20 years ago in a newspaper and haven't been able to find it since, but I can still picture it vividly. The photo captured the look on his face as well as all the flowers around him on the tank and it's one of the best antiwar images I've ever seen.

That reminds me of a documentary I saw but haven't been able to find again either about the Tiananmen Square protests (at least I think it was in a doc about that). It showed footage of mothers going out to the tanks with their kids and holding them up to the people inside and getting the kids to call these guys "uncle" and bringing them food, to try and make them remember that each side was human and that they were fighting against their own people.

Relevant; http://coinz.eu/prt/2_pte/g/z_42_escudos_25_1984_carnation_revolution_portuguese_coins.jpg Portugal had a revolution where, in order to demonstrate you didn't want the government anymore, you wore a carnation. The only violence was between 2 groups of soldiers on opposite hills who couldn't see the flowers on the others.

I love stuff like that, thank you.

There should be a documentary involving all these kinds of stories that I can watch when I'm feeling bummed about the world.

[–]SenorFreebie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unfortunately, for every event like this there is usually a counter-productive reaction. In Portugal's case; their socialist, revolutionary government, over the course of decades blended into one of the new libertarian European parties due to EU intergration and effectively gutted the country. Now it's on par with the basket cases thanks to frivolous spending and personal debt.

[–]SenorFreebie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Another example is Yugoslavia, which, by chance found itself in a position to pursue an independent socialist program. It made leaps and bounds, creating a highly educated, well constructed urban society. I'm sure you know how that story ends though.

another recent protest. This is a long time friend of mine featured, he went on a few talk shows as well. He is an all star guy, comes to America on work release every summer for the past 5 years. He has helped me financially even though his country is having these problems. I have been trying to get in touch with him for a one on one interview on it for a while and until i do i refuse to make any judgements on it....i feel that would be a crime against the Romanian redditors

http://www.gandul.info/news/video-povestea-studentului-care-protesteaza-pasnic-sunt-aici-pentru-ca-avem-cei-mai-bogati-politicieni-9158845

for the lazy, rough translation

"Michael Jitianu student in Bucharest, has chosen an unusual way of protest. No voice, the young native of Slatina, joined University Square protesters armed with a series of posters and a T-shirt says I'm here.

His complaints are written on sheets of paper boy always change them so that everyone can see. His motives? "Our future", "Injustice recent years", "For young people who decide to leave the country", "Because we can not find a decent job in our country," "For the European funds that do not have access" and Finally, "because time has no patience."

Jitianu Michael, 23, moved to Bucharest for the second degree, after having completed the studies at the Faculty of Letters Craiova. When he saw on TV what happens in University Square has decided to join the crowd.

"I saw people gathered in the market and I knew I must go and protests. So Saturday, I appeared for the first time in University Square protests," says the thought of it.

He says he chose this way of protest, the muteşte, because it considers "honest". Says it's full of powerful people who chanted "but without a bit of credibility."

Young said he was present on social networks that organized the meeting and called his friends and acquaintances to join the protests. "But I was disappointed with the young, promising much but did not come home here in the market.'s Items and receive many comments like, but few have been those who have presented here," he told the boy to mind .

Asked what changes seen in recent days, the student's return reminds the Ministry of Health Raed Arafat. "Basescu wanted to bring people on his side with this movement, but has already lost the confidence of the crowd a week ago if you denigrate the man who recalled to join the government," said.

Jitianu says that he has "great confidence" in the crowd at these protests, because "it is possible that both the elderly and those bent on fighting, to be brought to manifest with different incentives."

Finally, the most disturbing is the "lack of reaction of all." Believe that those who protest are a small part of the Romanian people. "At a football game, gather 20-30000 people easily, but at a asftel the manifest, leaving only 2,000 people. Find more individuals in the mall. Who knows, maybe we and a giant Christmas tree and maybe we collect more "concludes Jitianu.

This has been happening every night for the past 8 days. People are gathering in growing numbers in Piata Universitatii, the center of Bucharest to protest against poverty and corruption. As of last night, the protests have some-what died down due to falling of snow and low temperatures.

One of the protests which was organized by the opposition managed to gather more than 8000 people.

The sticker on the shield reads "Noi vrem respect", which translates into We want respect; to be respected.
