People believe that crap because others like my freaking high school PHYSICS teacher spewed that bullcrap. Yep.

scientific illiterates, should not teach.

I wonder how much of it is illiteracy, versus actual distortion of the truth to fit what they already believe from church and so on. If you believe that because we are in the Goldilocks zone, God must exist, then you are much quicker to latch onto things that confirm your bias (confirmation bias) before doing more research, even though within yourself, you have this nagging "Well, that's disproven somewhere, but I don't have time to read up on it. I'm sure it's fine."

Ok, just kidding, halfway through writing this I realized that's exactly what scientific illiteracy boils down to. If I was going to save myself here, I'd say "It's more like intentional scientific ignorance."

The sad thing is that, other than that little tidbit, she was actually quite a good teacher.

to be a bit more fair: scientific illiterates, should not teach science

This disgusts me. It robs the child of their ability to question things and learn. I too was told by my high school science teacher that God created the earth. We pretty much skimmed over the chapters on evolution and the big bang, we were told it was silly nonsense. It took me until I was almost 24 years old to realize I had been brainwashed and they were the ones believing in fairy tales.

The more time I spend here, the more I consider how lucky I am that I live in San Diego, which next to like LA and NY has to be one of the most enlightened places in the entire USA. My history and science teachers make fun of religion, and the two or three active Christians in the class laugh right along with us heathens.

Yes I remember teachers from my school used to teach that too. At young age I used to believe that stuff since I also used to think teachers are always right but I started to become a bit skeptical about a lot of stuff they said.

How fast does Earth approach the Sun, you ask? From July-Jan, 700mph on average. Recedes during other 6 months.

I've had regrets about every public figure I've followed on Twitter except Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

[–]fireburt 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, there are very few people I follow, but he is still the only one where I'm interested in everything he tweets.

clearly you never followed NPH or wil wheaton

those guys are brilliant

[–]metalmusicatheism 0 points1 point ago

Will wheaton is a redditor and a atheist too right?

[–]jsmayne 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

idk about atheist but he is a redditor

his s.n. is "wil"

if we say his name a bunch of times he occasionally appears

[–]metalmusicatheism 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I found him as wil wheaton on Tumblr and other sites, most of them are atheistic, but I don't know if they are other people.

To be fair, I don't think the gamification of Reddit is a problem. Good content still comes through, and you can easily sort out good posts from bad (and good posters from bad) the way it is.

[–]teuast -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ironic that karma came from Hinduism, isn't it?

[–]sndzag1 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the word as it is used in Reddit, is basically unrelated. Works pretty well, though. Good karma for upvotes, bad karma for downvotes.

[–]monstereddit -3 points-2 points ago

[–]Bbqwingz 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, there isn't a lot of new content except for news articles and the occasional "my story" post. Everything else is usually a repost of some kind, be it a Youtube video (Hitchslap anyone?), an image, an article, etc.

Lots of new people are new to this subreddit and probably haven't seen this image. Ever. Now they have.

That said, it does get posted quite a lot. What else can you expect of Reddit, though. Reddit is like...THE king of reposts.

[–]therealsylvos 2 points3 points ago

Even though it's a repost I'm still ok with it due to awesomeness.

It's not even the silliness of the supposed astronomical fact that she stated about the sun and the earth that does it for me, but it's how she ended it with "God is amazing!!"

Lets say you're playing with a set of Legos, the box art shows a perfectly beautiful looking red Lego house. You set forth to build this Lego house, and you completely fuck it up. Some parts of the house have the semblance of the perfect kitchen and the perfect bedroom that was shown on the box, but your rendition of the house looks downright awful. Suppose another person now walked in, and they said, "Awesome dude, the house was supposed to be red, and you managed to properly use red bricks! You are amazing!!"

Assuming the "fact" she claimed was actually true, that would be the context with which she delivered the line "God is amazing"; that an omnipotent creator managed to not fuck up within plus-minus 10 feet, given that the rest of the world is so unbelievably flawed in its creation.

[–]sireatalot 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even if that 10ft statament was true, still it doesn't prove that God is amazing. If we actually burned up or froze to death, we wouldn't be around to complain about God's mistake.

[–]OriginallyWhat 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

climbing up 10ft isn't the equivalent of the earth being 10 ft closer to the sun

[–]YodaTuna 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not that it matters, since the Earth's distance from the sun varies wildly over the course of a year.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

Ah, my bad. That aside, the whole "10 ft" argument is stupid, and, living in the bible belt, I'm surprised I haven't seen it on Facebook yet.

[–]Quarkitude 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You were not incorrect with the "Tens of thousands" number. 510 'tens of thousands' to be exact. I was just clarifying.

[–]crankybadger 3 points4 points ago

That's 510 tens of thousands of kilometers.

[–]gstatty 1 point2 points ago

The Earth rotates around the sun in an elliptical orbit, the distance between the Earth and the sun is never completely constant and earthquakes and geological changes in the Earth's environment cause the distance to change without us all catching on fire.

But they don't believe everything they hear, just the stuff that makes no sense.

When I tell them stuff that's actually true, they don't believe it.

Why you ask? Well, ask them how literal they take their bible....something that is so full of inconsistencies and bronze age "science" and understanding.....and maybe you would understand why they would believe such utter nonsense.

[–]penguin0719 0 points1 point ago

Here in Fort Collins, where I attend university, the average elevation is 5000 feet. Clearly, the poor people in Denver are being fried to death while we students spend our days building fires and huddling together for warmth.

This is why religion succeeds i think, people hear shit like this and because they dont know any better (or basic science apparently) they think its true. I mean, if they dont know any better, who are they to question what someone else tells them?

[–]squigs 0 points1 point ago

There's a pretty large habitable zone in our solar system which is miles wide. There is no way that moving 10 feet closer or further away will cause burning or freezing.

[–]zzorga 0 points1 point ago

What, is this a habitable zone for ants? It needs to be at least 10 million miles wider!
