I have yet to ever encounter an elevator this works in. Have fun though.

It works in my building but the elevators haven't been updated since the mid-60's.

I've never seen it work anywhere else.

My dorm's elevators have a switch for this. They use it on move-in day, but every other day it doesn't work.

[–]g4r4e0g 0 points1 point ago

Now elevators have a key which lets them do this. Usually the fire department has access to them.

It works great in the elevator just outside my office. It's less than 10 years old.

I worked security in several buildings in Canada and this didn't work. We would have a key that you could use to reset the elevator, but also to get to any floor you wanted without stopping.

On an interesting note, an old building in Slovenia built during the times of former Yougoslavia with a crappy elevator has this feature. And I have an interesting anecdote on this matter. As a kid I used this constantly... turns out people get pissed off if you do it. An older guy ran after the elevator, got me in the hallway and kicked me in the ass with steel toed boots a few times. Hurt like hell. Didn't do it since.

Most elevators have the close door button as a placebo. It doesn't actually function unless activated by emergency services, but it helps people feel better when they use it.

[–]PemCorgiSelphie 120 points121 points ago

the close door button in our place works for real, in fact.... sometimes the doors won't close UNTIL you press it, and then the elevator starts buzzing like it's your fault...

I've found an elevator the "door close" button works in! It's not even an old elevator, but it is in an old building. Also, this elevator has other quirks... if you try to keep the door open too long it will close whether there is an object (like a person) in the way or not.

[–]Legon750 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uncle got his arm stuck in one like that (my fault too...) luckily he managed to yank it out just before it started moving.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well don't leave me hanging. What the fuck happened?

[–]Legon750 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I held the button too long and he put his arm out to stop it from closing, it closed on his arm and started shifting. My grandmother accidentally pressed the floor below instead of the floor we were on and it started moving. He pulled as hard as he could and managed to get it out in time.

[–]servohahn 1 point2 points ago

It's a really freaky horror movie type situation where, at least for a split second, you are certain that some part of your body is going to be removed from the rest of it.

In my building's elevator, it definitely works. The door stays open for about ten seconds after you get in and press your floor. If you hit the "door close" button, it will close about 1 second after pushing the button. I have seen elevators where the button does nothing, though.

[–]patternfall 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It only functions for the rest of us if there's also a "door hold" button.

Doors open, press door hold button, once done loading or unloading, press door close button.

[–]C0lMustard 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to think that, but then an elevator technician told me they set a delay in these buttons. The ones you think are disabled actually have a long delay set.

Yes, I realize that this equates to t he same thing.

[–]JimmyDThing 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's screwing with you. There's no delay. The doors close when they close. The buttons don't do anything.

"It doesn't actually function unless activated by emergency services"

The amount of made up bullshit in this thread is astounding.

The "door close" button doesn't usually do anything (doesn't mean it's not connected, just that people have no real idea how an elevator is supposed to work. They just assume that a 'close' button should close the doors all the time.) when the elevator is in 'Run' mode. BUT, if you take the elevator key, and put it in stop mode, so you can move furniture for example (note I am not talking about the emergency/fire key with the red circle, just the regular elevator key) you have to use the open and close buttons to open and close the door. That way you can manually control the elevator. Also, that way the doors will stay open while you load the elevator. I've lived/worked in a ton of buildings and they ALL worked this way (mostly Otis elevators).

[–]aeoliscams 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know on the elevators in buildings I frequent that the "close door" button usually doesn't work on high-traffic floors (1st/ground) but will work on other floors.

[–]devedander 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most places this notice is posted as a placebo to make people feel like they have learned something they can feel smug about knowing that is actually generally not true.

[–]jpdyno 0 points1 point ago

On some very old ones it will work. As one other redditer mentioned, on some the doors won't close unless you use the button. It's like the old 571 phone callback trick, it used to work in a bygone day, but not now.

[–]SwampySoccerField 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There was a guy who w had mentioned that he worked in a building that had a dummy floor like that. He was an employee who befriended and old security guard who had been there a long time. He made him a special key to access it and everything. One day the security guard was fired or left the job and shortly after his key ceased working. The was completely abandoned and had a few old items from the the past few decades in there. He said he would go in there from time to time to chill.

Honestly that would just be amazing to have.

The words for eight and wealth sound similar so it's considered a lucky number.

[–]Higherpockets 1 point2 points ago

8 is considered the luckiest number in Chinese, because it sounds like the Mandarin word for wealth and is expected to bring good fortune

[–]symmitchry 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Further info: the word for 4, roughtly "Say" is phonetically identically to the word for "death" (also "Say"). The difference is just the tone used. (or maybe there's no difference at all?)

Similarly, 8 ("Baat") sounds like RICH ("Faat"), so 8 is a very lucky number.

At least, those are the cantonese versions.

[–]redditforgotmeagain 0 points1 point ago

You sometimes run into buildings that also don't have a 13th floor, so the numbers go 10, 11, 12, 15, 16. It's kind of weird to figure out how high you actually are.

Also a friend once rented a fancy apartment that should have been out of his price range, but as it was number 414 on the fourth floor he got it cheap.

[–]bside 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those floors probably full of mechanical and electrical equipment that take up the entire floor and are only reachable by the service elevator. They probably each serve 10 floors hence the space between missing numbers. Look on pretty much any high rise building and you will see evenly spaced floors on the building facade covered with louvers for the air handling equipment.

[–]originsquigs 22 points23 points ago

There is a key that emergency personel get that makes the elevator bypass floors. Nice job with trying to make people look like morons.

[–]jamesneysmith 12 points13 points ago

The close button doesn't actually do anything. It is basically a placebo. Most manufacturers of elevators don't connect the button to anything at all.

Edit: Did some research, and it turns out I was wrong. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia confirming the claim of the link:

"A functional "door close" button is required by elevator code (ASME A17.1, Requirements 2.27.3.3, "Phase II Emergency In-Car Operation"). In order for firefighters and rescue personnel to open or close elevator doors during emergency operation, the "door open" and "door close" buttons must be pressed continuously until the door is open or closed, respectively. An elevator with a non-working "door close" button would receive a violation during a routine inspection and test of fire service."

My step-dad is an elevator technician of 30+ years and has confirmed that this does not work. You have to have a key to access the bypass system.

I tried this in a hotel I was recently staying at. When the doors opened on the 3rd floor and people saw me stood there holding buttons on the lift it was quite awkward. Didn't work.

[–]Leaflock 0 points1 point ago

My understanding is that trick works in Otis brand elevator cars. Have used it in hotels.

Ha, the elevators in my building have a metal plate screwed over the door-close button. So jokes on you!

[–]DOMination47 0 points1 point ago

I did this every time while looking for a new apartment and one of the elevators had an alarm activate.

About the only trick I've ever seen work in an elevator was a way to reset the buttons when someone pushed them all before you got on. It involved pushing the top five floor buttons in a row or something.

What's funnier is that I would always fuck it up when I tried to do it and make the elevator ride even longer because I was hitting even more buttons.

Why does this elevator have an aversion to the number 4? There are no levels with the number 4. I thought that was the stunt.

Here is a better tip, with some elevators.
If you press three floor buttons at the same time, it will clear all selected floors. Comes in handy if you press the wrong floor but still have time to clear an reset the selection. (Or if you get on an empty elevator with multiple floors selected). This works on some, but not all elevators.

I was walking my dog the other day and found myself behind a couple of guys in work overalls. As I got closer I noticed they had the name of their company written across their backs, "Schindlers Lifts". Needless to say I felt quite chucklesom later that evening, my dog didn't poo in the house.

Every brand & model of elevator is different. That fact that this trick may work in your crappy apartment building doesn't mean that it will work anywhere else.

[–]canadianric 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not only does this not work in my building, but a buzzer noise goes off the whole time I am holding the button. So as the elevator is stopping at random floors on the way down I look like an ass and havent saved any time.

[–]pandalin 0 points1 point ago

This doesn't work in most elevators. Most elevators' door close buttons don't do anything, some elevators have it work if a fire key is inserted for firemen to skip floors.

[–]03Titanium 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wouldn't there also be an emergency "make the elevator come to this floor right now" button. So everyone is using the secret button presses and they cancel each other out.

[–]_Make_It_So_ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It works for the elevator you're in but the key is the emegency override.

[–]shiseido_red 0 points1 point ago

I really want to try this at Dragon*Con one year. The elevators are a constant nightmare of overcrowding. By Saturday afternoon you're usually ready to throw things at people who say "gotta go down to go up," but it is true. I just couldn't ever make myself do it. Everyone else is waiting miserably too.

[–]Athene_Wins 0 points1 point ago
