There were windchill warnings in effect that day, -35celcius (-31F for the americans) and blowing snow wind warnings 50mph gusts. This guy did not give a fuck

Dipped to -50celsius (with windchill) on monday here in Calgary, and yet there were people wearing shorts & t-shirts to uni. Not sure if trying to be tough or just plain stupid

As a person who has lived in Calgary for over 20 years I can attest to the fact that these people are riders fans who have just consumed 20 pilsners and about 50 mL of antifreeze.

Wind chill effect would be worse in a moving car.

The aerodynamics of the roof actually create a fairly good pocket of stable air in the car, which can be heated from below by throwing the heater on full and directing it at the floor vents. I used to drive around all the time with the top down with it close to freezing, and a few times on New Years when it was in the -5C to -10C range and did all right. I'm not saying this guy would be super comfortable in those temps, just that it's better than one might presume.

I used to drive my Honda S2000 in pouring rain on Australia highways with the roof down.

The manual states if you can attain and hold a certain speed the airpocket will catch cold air/rain and keep it off the driver and passengers. No idea it still applied at -40

Why would anybody live where there is snow? Unless you're too poor to move out of there, which seems to be the case.

I don't care how much OMGAWD and fancy computers you have, you're not going anywhere in the snow on summer tires.

[–]sheptard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pfff, I drove my RWD mercedes on summer tires in the winter.

It didn't go straight, but it moved forward eventually!

[–]aramid 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I drove my MR2 through two Midwestern winters. Absolutely no fucks were given; as long as you're quick on the wheel when the rear end starts to move, they actually get around really well.

Having all its weight on the rear wheels helped it get around quite nicely. It was actually less likely to get stuck than any random FWD car, because all else being equal, accelerating causes a weight transfer which adds even more traction to the rear of the car. FWD is normally better in snow because you can't accelerate hard enough to get this effect in a normal front-engine, rear-drive car, but in a mid-engined car like the MR2 you get way more traction than you'd think.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

MX-5 here, first winter. I hate it. Maybe it doesn't help being RWD and Manual but eh, that's the midwest for ya'. I hate Indiana winters.

[–]PETC 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um, any manual is going to be better in the snow than an autotragic. Just get some snow tires and go find a parking lot. Learn how to throw the car around in the snow, then drive normally everywhere and watch how idiotic everyone else is.

[–]aramid 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What tires are you using? If you have all-seasons or summer tires, the car should be awful. On the other hand, if you have proper snow tires it's a light, well-balanced car and should be able to get around brilliantly. Tires make a huge difference.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wish I could convince my father that. I keep telling him that I need snow tires. His response? Just go slow. I have to take 3 highways everyday to get to school, going up to 60 MPH. I CANNOT go slow. :c

[–]tulihauki 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I drove my mk2 Turbo for one winter and I must agree. Compared to FR Corollas and Starlet the MR2 was a lot easier to get moving from standstill. Smooth use of the throttle was essential because too much would cause the boost rise and instantly spin the wheels and, well - letting go of the throttle mid-corner is always a bad idea on mid-engined cars regardless of the weather.

I now have an EP3 Type-R with a limited slip diff and must say that it is very strong in the snow. How the LSD just pulls the front end to wherever the wheels point and slides the rear end around is quite incredible and a lot of fun.

[–]drummererb 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same. I own a Crossfire (go ahead and point and laugh) and all the weight is in the front on a RWD car. Threw 220 pounds of sandbags in the trunk and have had no issues. The key is actually taking traction control off when you're stopped on snow, just don't do this unless you know how to control your car in case you spin out. The TC will actually stop your engine and prevent that little oomf you need some times.

[–]PETC 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just went outside and removed all the snow from the top of my MR2 so it wouldn't all leak in through the T-Tops as its melting right now. I haven't moved the damn thing since the snow started, but I've got the wrong tires on it. They're plenty capable in the snow with the right equipment. I'm actually driving it down to Corvallis this weekend to take a friend down to look at an MK3 spyder he's probably buying. Hard top and everything! Under 6K! My friend has a Miata with studded snow tires on it. That thing is unstoppable!

[–]EPS_conduit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to think my Miata sucked in the snow. Then one year I had no choice but to put snows on it and take my chances.

Turns out it's not all that bad if you get enough sand in the trunk and remember to steer with your foot. No chance for getting through snow banks, though.

[–]PETC 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is no such thing as a bad snow car, only bad snow drivers and people without snow tires.

Hehehe. I was gonna get one, but the one they tried to demo for me was missing on several cylinders and stalled when the sales guy tried to put it in gear (lol). I ended up with a 2009 135 with a Dinan stage 2 package.

3rd Gen. Miata driver, here: the heaters in those things are miraculous. I'm 95% positive that if you left your hands in front of the vents for a minute, you'd burn them.

Also, if the snow's not too heavy, the aerodynamics will keep it from even entering the cabin.

Love driving at night with the top down on ours, in the cold with mittens and toques! Even in the rain!!! If we drive fast enough, we don't get wet. And we do live in BC, and yes it rains a lot here.

having sold cars, i know that you are not supposed to open or close a top under 35 degrees. The grease freezes up and can cause the folding mechanism to rip the fabric. edit: I found this out the hard way

[–]xHaZxMaTx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Having read the entire manual for my Miata, I don't recall this being an issue. Though I am curious and will look it up.

[–]apextek 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I ruined the top to an eclipse spider trying to open when too cold. I was informed later by more experience salesman, never change the position of a roof below freezing and to really try not to, if its under 50 degrees

[–]xHaZxMaTx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting. Perhaps that's what happened to my top, then; while not completely ruined, there are two strips of fabric that act of sort of springs so that the top can pop up enough for you to grab when you open the latch that keeps it down, if that makes sense. Anywho, both those straps have come undone from the top and while the top still works, it takes a bit more effort to pull up. I wonder if it being a Z-folding top makes any difference.
