This type of shot happens at nearly every serious photographer get-together occasion. When I used to shoot sports there would be about 6 guys from different papers/blogs around the game. Afterward we'd shoot the shit, grab a beer or whatever and one guy would always have everyone else's gear hung on him.

That's generally why you see a mixture of brands in these photos like Canon, Nikon, Sony etc.

Even with a version II lens out the version I is an extreeeeemely desirable lens (note, five e desirable). Unless the II is going to displace the I and retail for the same price, the retail price will not move.

Supply side might go up a little with people upgrading and selling thier I, but everyone is waiting to get one of these 'cheap I's' so demand will easily keep up with supply.

The only way second hand prices will drop is if the II pushes the retail price of the I down.

The I retails for $1300, second hand ones sell on ebay for 90% of that value. What does that tell you about demand?

It tells you demand for the I is very high, certainly high enough to absorb any increase in supply that will come about from people upgrading to the II. Especially with people twitching on the sidelines for what they think will be cheap second hand I's. If the I continues to retail at $1300 the second hand price will pretty much hold at 90%.

The caveat here is if Canon decides to price the II at $1300 and lower the retail price of the I. Only then will the second hand price fall to match the drop in retail. I don't think that will happen though.

Sometimes - if you can believe this - the street resale value on a used lens (especially L) will go up once a MK II is released, because the original MK I models become discontinued, thereby making them more difficult to find.

When the 70-200 F 2.8L IS MK II came out, this exact same thing happened. A lot of people actually complained about the quality of 'bokeh' in the MK II so the MK I is more popular but is no longer available retail market as new (to my knowledge). Also, like cars, you often don't want the first run of a new lens out of the factory. You'll be sending it back in, more often than not for backfocusing or recalibration issues...

Honestly? I prefer my 24-105. Lighter, longer reach and IS. I lose a stop in terms of aperture but then on a mkII it makes no difference. 24-105 F2.8 IS L would make me happy though

Currently non of the prototype 24-70s have IS. I don't expect to see IS on the 24-70 anytime soon

Yeah I expect it to be a 24-70 mkII without IS.

Thing is with the brilliant high ISO performance, IS and weight are bigger factors. Be interesting to see what the 5DmkIII is like though, and how the 1DX does for high ISO.

The one thing I liked about the 24-70 is the way it does zoom, as it means the hood is relevant at all focal lengths, whereas the 24-105 hood is only fully effective at 24mm.

I have one on a 7D and am somewhat disappointed even after micro focus adjustment. It's really soft wide open and never gets anywhere near as sharp as my 50mm EF 1.4 or provides the same quality bokeh. It's built like a tank and is very good but it doesn't Wow me. Something to consider if you're saving for it. Might want to rent a copy for a weekend and see if 2.2lb and the priceis worth it to you. The covered range is perfect for an everyday zoom though.

It's a zoom lens, it will likely always be a bit softer at some ranges than a relatively high quality prime. But can your 50mm shoot at 24mm as well as 70mm? No.

I own both as well as many L primes, speaking from experience.

Not to mention that the L series are designed for full frame cameras and the 7D has the APS-C sensor size. I also own it (as well as other L series) and I think its pretty phenomenal.

I'm a noob, but isn't this guy right? Why is he getting down-voted? An full frame lens on a crop sensor means it just uses the center portion of the lens, which in general has better IQ than the edges of the lens.

This is only generally try as you put it yourself. I have high-end lenses clearly giving their best of full-frame while some have a different character. There are even more factors at play. Lenses are produced with an high-quality process but a manufacturing perfect units is another level. This would require NASA-grade builds. My experience is opposite...I've used both and was just disgusted at the horrible image quality I got from my 50/1.4, maybe I just had a bad copy, but shot wide open that lens was just garbage.

My 50mm f/1.4 was always soft too until around f/2.8. I ended up using my 50mm f/1.8 more because it was sharper wide open, even though the bokeh wasn't quite as smooth.

Ahhh I see, yeah, I also noticed that the 50/1.8 was way sharper when shot wide open. Too bad, a small compact 50/1.4 that can shoot wide open would have been nice :( The only good alternative seems to be the big sigma 50/1.4.

Send it in to canon, wide open my 24-70 on my 7d was sharp.

I had the barrel nuts replaced on it.. (workhorse lens)... and now it's soft... so off to canon it went.

Hopefully it's just as sharp at 2.8 as it was when I got it.

definitely a nikon. it's a nikon 200-400mm f/4 vr2, attached to one of the d2 or d3 series bodies. i can't really tell which from the picture.

but the lone nikon make me think these aren't all his cameras. that it's a photo expedition, and everyone there decided to load their cameras onto one guy, and take a pic. even people who throw their money away tend to keep their systems compatible.

Generally so you don't have to change lenses. Prime lenses (non-zoom) have a better image quality because of less moving parts and less glass, but having to change from a 300mm to a 800mm lens is very time consuming and potentially exposes the camera and lens to dust.

I have an entry level cannon DSLR that i dropped into my pool while it was on, it sunk to the bottom. took it out, dried it off, and after the body, lens, and flash still worked. You'd have to try to break a pro quality lens.

I know Canon's L series lenses are quite tough (me owning one of the cheaper ones) but I agree, I can see having two nice primes on two cameras and a mid-range zoom on a third maybe, but 6 is quite ridiculous.

I'm guessing there were a bunch of people out shooting that day and they all piled their cameras on this guy for the picture.

The saddest part is that guitar is disaseemblable (Dis-assemble-able, greatest word I ever made up) and broke down into 4 different guitars. And a few years after it was created, someone snuck backstage and stole it in between shows.
