DDOSing is the sending of blank packets to server IP, overloading demand of information, so in a way, you are correct.

Sometimes servers have a great amount of server memory/power/ram and will only overload and crash if there are many many DDoSers however a single DDoSer can crash a game server like a building gmod server.

[–]MonsieurObscure 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is no such thing as a "single DDoSer" unless you want to consider a botnet authority a single entity.

DDos = DISTRIBUTED Denial of Service

When I said a single DDoSer I meant 1 dude using LOIC, I am aware of what DDos means.

[–]MonsieurObscure -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? Cause you also think memory and ram are worthy of distinction, and sending blank packets is useful. You also felt the need to distinguish a powerful server being taken down by "many many DDoSers" and a small server by a "single DDoSer".

Yep. Calling your bullshit, Mr. Bullshit.

[–]Excelsior58 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now, now, let's not make him cry.

[–]chiisana 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not saying the idea of 'single DDoSer' is right, but memory could mean (highly doubt that's what he meant, though) shared memory, which includes swap (hard disk scratch). In that case, memory could be considered different than ram. Just saying.

Also, single as pointed, first D is Distributed. Single user using LOIC is still not distributed. And lastly, blank packets are weak. SYN packets w/o SYN ACKs are more effective.

[–]free_range_human 14 points15 points ago

Not trying to pick hairs here, but it's not so much just "sending empty packets" as it is specific types of requests. I believe ICMP requests being broadcast to flood the network is a common DDoS attack method, as well as sending a SYN packet, which the server will respond with an SYN/ACK packet, but no final ACK response will be sent back; causing the server to leave connections open.

I find this 'stuff' to be very interesting and happened to be reading up on network security recently. I'm certain a network security specialist could do a far better job than I at explaining.

[–]Excelsior58 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, that's exactly how I'd explain it. That's the most common attack vector, although there are other protocols that. An be exploited in addition to ICMP, such as DNS and any other beaconing/heartbeat protocol, but the concept is the same.

In high school my friend discovered that if you held down F5 on the school's website for about 10 seconds, it would completely crash the server and they wouldn't be able to do anything or get their emails until somebody fixed it.

As I recall, he got in a shitload of trouble (for "hacking"), which we all thought was hilarious because all he did was hold down a button.

This made me laugh, friend.

[–]landaaan 20 points21 points ago

Not this again....

A "SYN flood" DoS attack is when you send a forged TCP/SYN packet to the server, the when server sends an acknowledge request back (in the form of a TCP/SYN ACK packet) to open the connection, the attacker ignores (or doesn't receive) the ACK packet. The server is left with a half open connection which keeps sending ACK packages out to the attacker. Doing this continually from multiple sources (DDos) saturates the connection capacity of the target server.

[–]Sickology101 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a joke..

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, the LOIC uses full legal HTTP requests, in an attempt to saturate the thread pool of a standard Apache web server. Nginx is a bit harder to break due to the fact that it uses events rather than threads, but it can be done.

There's also various other attacks one can use to cause a DoS via standard, legal HTTP requests, including creating a hash collision in a hashmap in the CMS software that's generating the site's content (many languages have fixed this issue, PHP hasn't properly), accessing multiple session-using PHP pages at once to starve the amount of PHP processes available to serve pages (accessing two session-using pages at once will cause one process to hang uselessly until the other is finished, and PHP is generally set up to only allow a certain amount of processes to be spawned), and more.

[–]cixeltree 9 points10 points ago

It wasn't really the seriousness as much as the "Not this again....". You can explain it if you want, but you can't start a good explanation with an insult or a gesture of blunt superiority and expect it to go over well.

I upvoted you, by the way, because I appreciate the explanation regardless. Still, I don't think it should be surprising that not everybody was very appreciative of the help.

[–]Im_white_and_spoiled 0 points1 point ago

If a heap of people pinged a site using a regular macro to do all the work for them would that effect a site at all?

[–]anras 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes you can ping a site to death. I remember in the mid-90s when dialup BBSes were starting to get internet connections, usually slow ones like 128 kbps ISDN lines (yup, for all users to share), a competing BBS might flood them with pings to knock their users offline.

[–]mcanerin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We literally called it "The Ping of Death".

[–]Dantrag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The "Ping of Death" was when you sent a ping packet that was 65,535 bytes or larger.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How do you send packets without

ping reddit.com

or refresh? How do you make large packets get sent to a location?

[–]Dantrag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ping -t -l (size) reddit.com

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

like

ping -t -l 50,000 reddit.com

?

[–]Dantrag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if you want to send a repeating ping to a target:

ping -t "target"

If you want to change the size of the ping:

ping -l "a number" "a target"

If you want to learn more:

ping /?

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!
