Some high end cameras have a big dial you turn for zoom. Makes it a lot easier for minute and drastic zooms. Shits expensive tho, as its very precise.

[–]Crazy_Hair_Week 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, a surprising number of cameras can never keep up with the ring. Two of mine have zoom rings, but no matter how fast you spin the ring, the zooming will only go as fast as the fastest zoom speed is. The ones that are spot on cost a lot.

[–]kvachon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I've only ever used one that was a hard line from the dial to the lens. It was at a Comcast studio. That thing was NICE, it was detachable from the camera and you could either hold it or clamp it on the dolly. The wire running from it to the camera was something like a bike brake type deal.

Very cool indeed.

[–]Crazy_Hair_Week 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I gotta admit, I drooled a bit. I do lots of photography/videography work for fairly big events, but I've always wanted to grab ahold of one of the big TV cameras and have a field day.

[–]kvachon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In all honesty, check if your town has an Access Television Studio. Comcast and Verizon have to spend part of every cable bill their customers pay to keep local tv studios up-to-date. There's a good chance that (if you're from america) your town has a sweet setup.

[–]voon 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most good high end video cameras have a speed setting on the zoom. You can also turn it to manual and it'll zoom as fast as you can crank that bitch.

I seriously didn't know it was still common for people to bid on eBay auctions... thought that novelty died in the mid-2000s with people favoring the 'Buy-It-Now'.

This is what I think of: "What was his bid?" "$1,200" "I'll bid $1,201 Bob."

[–]diulei 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hehe. I think with eBay though, depending on the current price it only allows you to bid in increments that increase with the price.

[–]jooes 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, but if the bid is at something like, say, $1100, you can throw a $1201 max bid in there... Then if someone bids $1200, you'll still have them beat.

Now that is the greatest feeling in the world... I love it when you win by a buck even though they tried to snipe you in the last minute.

[–]dash4g 7 points8 points ago

I always use auction, but like you I wait until the very last moment to bid.

I don't understand people who actually place bids on things that have more than 15 minutes left on it unless you absolutely won't be able to check the action again around the time it's supposed to close.

Bidding on something that has more than a day left on it is basically just raising the price on yourself.

[–]sammitch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is something I never understood. My college auctions things on eBay, and people bid on them in like 30 minutes of them being put up. They have 4 days on them and they don't have a reserve EVER. It's just stupid to bid until the last minute because you could get something for $5 instead of $50.

[–]budtske 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the vast majority of people who "snipe" auctions use automated software for this, which is why bids start coming in so late.

OSS software for this: bid-o-matic. Don't waste money on crappy software that does the same thing.

2 minutes before time is a giant amount of time given these kinds of software and 2-40 seconds (larger amount of time for out-of-region players, ie bidding on ebay US and being in EU) is much more the ballpark of people who spend their days doing this.

The only reason I know this is because my father spends days on ebay buying and selling stamps.

FYI, bid on something in those first days, the people that bid last minute (using software) will still show up and outbid you so It has ZERO benefit. The bastard thing about this it will outbid in increments you select and minimum amount is an option.

Those first days the item nr is added to the list, and max amount you want to give for it entered. that's all the info and that's all the time they spend on it (apart from finding the item and looking at it's info, this means a few seconds) , you refreshing ebay like a madman in their eyes are wasting time that could be spent looking and buying other items

[–]sammitch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This particular case is local pickup only, so you have to live in or around my city. I have not seen anyone using the sniping software at all because hardly anything is up to last second bids from what I've noticed.

In general, yes, I see your point.

[–]budtske 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, sorry.

Yes other platforms especially local ones won't have this issue.

[–]RunsLikeAGirl 0 points1 point ago

As an ebay seller, I would say there are advantages to bidding early.

If an auction is at 0 bids, everyone gets excited and starts really watching, then pounce at the end, and it can turn into a bidding war. Emotions start to come into play, because you've invested emotionally, and it's easy to bid more than you had planned.

On the other hand, if a listing has a bid on it early on, other people see it and think "Eh, fuck it. Other people already want it. It will go too high". Often an early bid is the only bid an item will get, and often for cheaper than a similar item with no bids on it until the end.

When I'm buying, I tend to put in a very low bid to "stake my claim", so to speak, and then come in at the end and make sure I'm still the high bidder.

[–]LardLad00 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is the best strategy. Put in the minimum bid just to make it show that there are bids down, and then snipe with your high amount at the end.

[–]WasIRong 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"novelty"? Auctions are certainly not novel. They've been around for as long as money has been around. Not sure why you'd think it was uncommon for people to bid on items.

[–]diulei 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not auctions themselves. eBay auctions and bidding specifically (article from 2008). When eBay first launched in the 90s it was a new and exciting thing to be able to bid and watch auctions online, but the novelty wore off and people started gravitating towards fixed-price items.

I used to use eBay a lot too up until about 2005-2006, both buying and selling. It was clear that people (including myself) heavily started to favor 'Buy-it-Now'. I stopped because there were too many scammers and fees were too high.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Last year, I put up a sealed Zelda game for $110 Buy-It-Now. It did not sell. Immediately after that, I put it up for auction starting at $35 and ended at $149.50 with like 10 bids.

Buy-It-Nows can be inflated, but auctions create fervor and over-speculation with the right item ;-)

[–]muteterror 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if you're patient you can normally get something far cheaper than the buy it now price with normal auctions...

although some son of bitch will probably out bid you in the last few seconds.

[–]groberts1980 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hate sniping. Nobody uses eBay the way you're supposed to. Decide on the highest amount you would pay for the item, and place that as your bid. Let eBay's proxy bidding to the rest. Unfortunately, everybody comes in and snipes the bid at the last 10 seconds. I only do Buy It Now items on eBay because I got tired of snipers.

[–]radiogeek 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand, if somebody bids more than your top dollar, why does it matter when they bid? I pick my maximum bid and when somebody outbids me, I think he paid too much, he can have it.

[–]PuffPadderSnake 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's an online auction... Not a silent auction. It does suck to get "sniped," but it's fair and square. The way you're supposed to win: bidding the highest before time's up.

[–]ResidentWeeaboo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you hate the tension caused by waiting to snipe, you could get a program called jbidwatcher (google it) to snipe automatically a preset amount a present number of seconds before the end of the auction for you. Another strategy is to bid early in the auction with a single proxy bid. Sometimes those who nibble become disinterested when you constantly outbid them and you end up winning in the end at a lower price. I've won both ways before.

[–]CapnCrunch10 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a buyer, if I want an item really bad and I intend to purchase it, I will put in my maximum at the last second because I don't want to pay more than I would. Either way, if you were legitimately bidding on items yourself like you mentioned (putting the highest amount once), and you lost regardless of a snipe, you didn't intend to pay over that amount anyway.

Protip: If you actually have time to bid during auctions (like watching the timer go down), have two windows open with one on the main page with timer counting down and the other set up with a bid confirmation page with your max bid. Click confirm bid when there is 2-3 seconds left. This usually beats out sniping websites too as most of them bid with 5-8 seconds left.

Or just bid with the highest amount you intend to pay and you will win because you are willing to pay more than others or lose because you were not willing to pay more than others. The last minute bid has no effect in this scenario.

I hate snipers, but I feel a twinge of accomplishment whenever I still win an auction and I'm up against an obvious snipe.

The irritation is that irrational moment when you decide fuck the money, now i just want to win, because: fuck that guy. That really pings yer wallet like a motherfucker.

[–]stewpedassle 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Qualifier: I have only bid on approximately three things on eBay.

Comment: I hammersnipe any time I want to actually bid because--after checking the history on each of the auctions--it is clear that the person was using aliases to bid up their own wares. Again, it was only 3 times, but I am batting 1000.

[–]thekilljoy 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I play games with the self-bidders. Especially if it's something I can get from another user if I lose;

  1. Add to watch list, this is useful later if you lose

  2. Setting strange max bids (like 10.21 instead of 11.00) can usually catch them out.

  3. watch them slam bid you up, expecting your max bid to be the next dollar higher.

  4. let them win their own auction (then they gotta eat the fees or report their alias as a backout buyer).

  5. then they relist after the 'buyer' goes and 'backs out'.

  6. your choice: bid again (possibly repeating this game) or report them.

I've plugged probably half a dozen or so sellers for this using that little routine now.

[–]groberts1980 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

These people are why I quit using eBay for all except the occasional Buy It Now item. A friend of my wife really wanted me to get her a deal on a used MacBook and I damn near told her to fuck off after losing a few auctions to snipers.

[–]dopameme 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sorry, but in my book, there's only way to win an auction and that is to snipe. if i bid early, someone will bid in 50 cent increments until they outbid me.

[–]radiogeek 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but if they bid more than your maximum, they paid to much, let them have it and move on.

[–]dugmartsch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But if you're buying a macbook for 900 bucks, you'd certainly still buy it for 900 and fifty more cents. Another guy is willing to pay 900 plus a dollar, because fuck you guys, i've got a dollar to spare, and it's worth 900 to me. Original guy comes back, says fuck you too buddy I've got 20 to spare. Boom it's 900 for the macbook and 20 bucks for the spite.

A great way to lose your shirt is to get emotionally invested in an auction, and it's really easy to do.

[–]groberts1980 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly, this is what eBay has turned into. The only way to win is to snipe better than the other snipers out there. This is why I quit using eBay. If it's not "Buy it now" I don't bother.

[–]wartexmaul 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are doing it wrong. Bid low and over and over at the beginning. Then bid high when you have 10 minutes left, if he doesn't outbid you after 5 minutes, retract bid. If he outbids you, have the bid retraction form filled out and ready. Retract in the last 5 seconds.

[–]thekilljoy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I like the idea of doing it this way, I just don't. Every now and then eBay gets scummy about retraction abusers and whacks them over the head for it. A couple of my friends lost years worth of positive reviews and account age for it.

[–]stewpedassle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is another way to deal with it, and much more creative. I don't know the fee structure, so it is possible that sniping may still end up costing them more.

Frankly, if I use eBay in the future I will still snipe it because I don't care to take the time to carry out that process.

[–]thekilljoy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No fees for being a legit sniper! If you're a legit buyer and you're sniping, keep at it! The system ain't broke for you.

It's alias snipers that break the system. Alias snipers are just the seller using an alternate account to artificially inflate the price of their goods. But they have a method of sniping that is noticeably different from a legit sniper, and that's what I'm talking about.

I have a system for these people; see this comment

[–]dopameme 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this doesn't make sense to me. if you are a seller and you outbid your buyer then you lose- no sale and you have to pay more to re-list and wait. i buy collectible stuff and i always snipe. i bid very low at the beginning of the auction so i don't look like an a-hole as i snipe later.

[–]groberts1980 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I often wonder if the sniper is an alt account of the guy listing the item. Also using the alt to up the bid amount during the auction.

[–]thekilljoy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's become common, but the pattern is rather obvious because of some things that alias snipers do that regular snipers don't;

Typically, an alias sniper will test bid an item if its bid on early (it will never be first bidder). They're testing out your max bid to see if there's room in it. They'll usually bump you up two or three times until the last 4 hours of the auction, because they feel that with days to go on the auction, outbidding with their alias is safe.

Then it goes silent at around the 4 hours left mark. It stays silent until anywhere from 15 to 5 minutes left. You'll get 1 more bid up at this time; only one. That's another test of your max bid.

Now, at the 1-2 minute mark, it gets crazy. The sniper starts hammer bidding 1 dollar raises (bidsniper or a similar tool usually) and cuts out during the last 15-10 seconds; letting you have final bid.

You can check bid history to see if its an alias sniper; an auction with a lot of activity usually is a bid war between more than two parties. If it's you and one other party; especially someone with a very low (less than 25-50) review count, it's probably an alias snipe.

Set your last max bid for an off-dollar amount ( some change ) and bid up. the sniper takes the bait and buys his own item, troll succeeded.

That's sort of what we're talking about, how we spot them and beat them at their game. No one is being a proponent of it here, and I've effectively caught, reported, and shut down at least half a dozen sellers for it in the last few years.

[–]ResidentWeeaboo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't actually caught somebody red-handed doing it, although, I did have somebody send me a second-chance offer right after the end of the auction. I had a proxy bid in and somebody sniped me a few dollars above my proxy bid at the end. Had they not bid, I would have won it about $20 cheaper. The seller's reason was that they did not want to ship out of the country. I ended up not taking the offer, but no way of knowing for sure.

[–]thekilljoy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've had some second chance offers and I always decline them; invariably the thing ends up being relisted and I just rebid in and get it for less anyways.

The most atrocious thing someone on eBay has done to me is outright & blatant attempts to scam eBay themselves. After winning an auction, paying, and receiving the item in the auction, the seller messaged me, through eBay, and asked me to agree to cancel the auction's win. In the cancel request itself, he said he was doing it to avoid eBay's fees.

Pretty fricken dumb. Guy had a few thousand reviews too; gone now, I sent that straight to eBay, his account was termed out in no time.

[–]groberts1980 0 points1 point ago

thats why I quit bidding. An in-law of mine explained that there was a whole science dedicated to winning bids at the last second, programs you could run to bid for you at the last second, etc. After too many losses to shit I really wanted, I tomahawked and said "fuckit."

[–]wolfmann 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

there are... and it's the only way to bid on eBay IMHO... any bid before the last 10 seconds is just wasted, or you're paying too much.

plus I failed to mention that I pretty much quit using ebay when I found amazon. I do however return every now and then for a thing or two. I dont bid though, I just use the buy it now.

[–]le_cmpunk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

THIS! I usually watch the last 2 minutes of a auction to see if the price is still within my range. I make sure to have my max price copy and pasted, and with 7 seconds to go... Submit that shit.

[–]colarg 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i seriously think you are joking, i BID on ebay all the time, i win 85% of the time. 95% of the time i pay less than what i would have paid going any where else accessible to me, and the last 5% well, i can honestly say i didn't pay full retail price, so still a win situation. I do invest a lot of time researching before every bid, so you can say that i still lose time, but i do it while at work :)

[–]groberts1980 0 points1 point ago

Same here. Now I only go to eBay when I'm looking for something really random, like vintage baseball pennants or obscure tin beer signs.

[–]le_cmpunk 10 points11 points ago

If you're bidding on something before 1 minute to go, you're doing it wrong. Why inflate the final price, just go in and snipe with 5 seconds to go.

[–]Solomaxwell6 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way eBay works, because you put down a max price, it doesn't inflate the final price if you bid ahead of time. Let's say it's $2. I put down $10 as my max price. The cost now bumps up to $2.25. Someone comes in and sees this, and puts down $5 as their max price. Since my max is higher, it bumps up to $5.25. On the other hand if I had sniped, it would've been at $2.25 after the other guy bid, I put down my max, and it bumps up to $5.25. Either way, I'm paying the same amount.

You're right in one case: If the other guy then decides he's willing to pay more than $5, and bumps up his max price. But I've found auctions are usually busy enough that that mechanic happens on its own, and choosing to snipe instead of bidding ahead of time doesn't fix it. And since I tend to bid on cheaper things where most of the cost is in S&H anyway, the most the price will ever increase this way is a dollar or two.

[–]groberts1980 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're getting downvoted because there are a bunch of fucktard snipers in this thread. All my responses in this thread will be downvoted as well because I hate snipers and I wish people would use eBay as intended.

[–]le_cmpunk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well it's not an exact science, but I try to make my first bid the last bid. So 3 seconds to go either I'm the highest bidder or not.

Granted the majority of ebay auctions I do are for tickets. The difference being $10-$30 per auction. Since tickets are typically not limited to a single auction, I have a larger room for error.

[–]Solomaxwell6 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My ebaying habits tends to be searching for video games under $5, putting a $10 max bid on a few of them, then leaving it alone. I don't do this very often (maybe once every three-four months), and I usually end up with one or two relatively old games out of it, very cheap. The way it usually works is most of those games will end up selling for $15-$20 and a few games will only get one or two other bids, and I'll pick them up for $2-$5 plus a few more in shipping and handling. In that case, sniping wouldn't have helped me at all.

Sniping doesn't make much of a difference unless someone else is pressured into bidding higher as the winner of the auction is the person with the highest maximum bid, and the price is the second highest bid + the increment

[–]PizzaGood 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If bidding, you really should snipe it. If you're not placing your bid in the last 10 seconds, you're doing it wrong.

It really shouldn't make any difference if people used eBay the way it was intended, but they don't, they try to treat it as a traditional auction. Therefore if you place the bid too late for them to react, you'll get the item cheaper. Their fault for not bidding their maximum price in the first place.

I generally wait until 5 seconds to go. If I do it with more than 8 to 10 seconds I sometimes get outbid.

But yeah, I pretty much just go there to Buy It Now anymore. It's not really a garage sale for me anymore, it's a world-wide marketplace where I can get stuff from China for a few bucks.

[–]BallDescension 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AuctionSniper.com

It's essentially nothing cost-wise to use and you can fire and forget. If there are a number of similar/same items, you can group them and then direct it to snipe until you buy the number you want.

Get some sleep and have your sniped phone send you a message about how just won another snipe. The fun is when you get into areas of items where everyone uses snipe services. One person bids enough to make the "Buy it now" disappear (which is, often enough) the minimum bid. Then everyone waits until the emails get sent out from their snipe service. Nearly no human bidding happens.

Now, new strategies take hold. How few seconds do you leave at the end of the auction? There is a very small possibility that with less than 3 seconds, you bid won't register. With 2 or less, the odds increase. The new problem is having a bid which would win had you gotten it in before someone else, but their bid raises the price to the point where your higher bid is not higher than the next legit bid price. e.g. Item goes for 505 and the next legit bid is 507.50 and your highest bid was 506.37.

There is also the problem of matching highest bids. Two people put in matching highest bids with a couple seconds to go. The winner is determined by time.

So do you bid with 7 seconds because you think you have a sniping rival and want to get your possibly matching highest bid in first OR do you bid with 3 or less seconds and try to make sure a human bidder without mad planning can't raise their bid fast enough?

AuctionSniper has also just added auto bid increment to try to help with the last second competing sniping issues. You can tell it to auto increment. So, it'll bid with 7 seconds and then raise the smallest increments a couple times so that you worry less about last second humans or matching snipers.

I'd almost call his fights borderline professional wrestling.

Ebay seems like a bad place to buy anything with bids nowadays, seems like every time I look @ stuff that's not "Buy it now", it's actually going for MORE than retail price. If not that; certainly more than you'd expect to pay for the item.

People seem to get caught up in the bid wars and pull idiotic crap like bidding more than something's worth.. good for the seller, I suppose.

The only reason I ever get stuff off ebay anymore is cheap buy-it-now sales for stuff like 2.5mm headsets, phone batteries & such.

I love how Ebay has framed their business to when you use it, you can 'win.' You buy something from their site, and you're a 'winner.'

Does wonders for their cash flow. Because think of how many losers sit around on Ebay all day trying to 'win' stuff so they can feel like 'winners.'
