Just something like seeing galaxies and nebulae, or a scale comparison of Earth and VY Canis Majoris makes me feel way stronger emotions of awe than i ever got from being in church or praying to biblegod.

Did you know there is a Theology centered around this?

What, Panentheism?

I was going to guess Naturalistic Pantheism but then you said theology.

The universe does not require, nor desire, your belief. The universe is. Your belief is irrelevant.

Christianity claims to be humble, but it truly is arrogant to the point of sillyness.

my mom recently told me, "You know, there is something greater than yourself out there." and i told her i know, its called the government...

...because you have an omniscience which allows you to know just how humbled all Christians are by their God?

idk man, a burning bush on the side of an active volcano just doesnt seem as impressive to me when i look up at the stars... christian miracles and monsters just arent as impressive as reality.

No. Because I have an understanding of Christian doctrine, and what it says about man's place in the Universe.

[–]SteveJorbs 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You might have some understanding of Christian doctrine but your claim to be more humbled by the natural universe than Christians are by the one they believe created it is like the man who says, "I love my wife more than you love your wife. And I know this because I have an understanding of wedding vows."

[–]TwelveHawks[S] 9 points10 points ago

You're right, I should be more careful. I shouldn't have said "more humbled" I mean, what is this, a humility contest? Right? I should have said "I'm as humbled by it as Christians are by God." or simply "I'm humbled by it."

We, good sir, are agreed.

And so it was on that day, a Christian and an Atheist struck accord on /r/athiesm.

::Edit:: For the record, I upvoted your post. The world needs more Calvin and Hobbes.

While I agree that the universe is indeed fascinating, I think the species has managed to get by pretty well by taking care of the things we need to do each day. To borrow a little insanity from GlaDOS, "Look at me still talking while there's science to do."

So you're saying you're "more humble" than somebody not bragging about their humility? You, sir, seem to have an abundance of faith concerning the depth of your feeling.

[–]Stojanikus 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but, what does it mean to believe in the Universe? You don't need to believe in it, it is what it is and we know it.

[–]ihung 0 points1 point ago

We're walking, loving, singing, laughing, thinking meat. Even more amazing, facts suggest that none of this was planned but came about solely as the result of favorable circumstances and the laws of nature. We might even be the only sentient species in the whole universe. How ironic that we're humbled by the vast emptyness and some boring agglomerations of hydrogen and helium up there.

Looking into the sky evokes so many feelings. I'm awed by its beauty. Humbled by its' vastness. Inspired by its mystery. And deeply saddened by my inability to understand where I am.

"In outer space you develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. That Thing that is greater than ourselves is probably not seen by the naked eye--but it can kill us easily. Thankfully, we can see them in microscopes pretty easily.

I always think about how pollution blocks out the sky and the stars. We can't truly understand how vast the Universe is, and how small we are when we can't see it with our own eyes.

Excuse the religious vibe being written in the atheist section, but there are many Christians (and other religions) who prefer to view their 'God' as the natural universe. It's traditionally come from Pantheism and Materialism, but there are so many ideas thrown about now.

So yeah, you might be more religious than you think!

[–]JediSquirrels 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not necessarily. Einstein constantly referenced "God" in his work as a word for the beauty and majesty of the natural universe. He didn't actually believe in God, but used the language available to him to describe the awesome nature of science.

[–]Keldrath 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sure they do, but its still stupid. not only does it cause the word to lose meaning, but it already attributes it to already existing and named things. if you are dumb enough to say that "god" is the natural universe, then you should be saying the natural universe is the natural universe. god becomes meaningless and ultimately confusing.

[–]TwelveHawks[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can dig it if people define God as being the Universe, or the set of all natural laws that guides the Universe, and other things like that.

What I am not into is when people tell me I'm arrogant or self-centered for denying God. As if I think I'm so awesome and special that I just don't have to believe in anything bigger than myself.

That's not the case at all. Thinking you were specially created by a perfect being in its own image is way more arrogant than what I think, which is that I'm an invisible speck on an invisible dot among infinite others.

But then people tell me that I'm a nihilist, which also isn't the case. Meaning comes from within. From how you live and feel, and how you treat others (which includes plants, animals, and inanimate things) and how they respond to you.

Being small, fragile, and fleeting doesn't make you insignificant. It actually is more beautiful and meaningful than assuming that you are the eternal focal point of all existence, in my opinion.

the very fact that you won't be here forever; that you aren't the most important thing in the Universe; That makes me want to appreciate you more.

If that's the case, then that word has lost all meaning, so I prefer to view my god as the grilled cheese sandwich I ate yesterday.

Sadly, those who post all the "zomg universe!" pictures seem to have a pretty weak understanding of it.

I guess Calvin is no exception, asserting the universe is infinite when we have no evidence of such.

[–]neologasm 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For all practical purposes, to a human living in the early 21st century the universe might as well be infinite. We do not have the tools necessary to gauge whether that is the case, however. Even if we did, with our current technology we may never even leave our galaxy, let alone reach the edge of the universe. So in a way the boundaries in which we can travel truly are endless. Obviously that means nothing for the actual nature of the universe, but I'd like to think that in this strip Calvin is not using "infinite" to literally mean never-ending, but as a descriptive term that fills a void in the english language where we don't have any better word to describe the vastness and incomprehensible hugeness of the universe. Maybe I'm just too much of a fan of the comic, though, and am much too ready to dismiss any factual errors. The concepts being discussed may really be misinformed and/or outdated. There is nearly twenty years worth of scientific discovery and progress that has occurred since the strip has been published (I am not sure about this strip specifically, but fifteen years have gone by for sure, and maybe more). Even so, I'll let it slide because Calvin and Hobbes is not trying to be a perfect, all-encompassing encyclopedia of human knowledge. I think the sentiments expressed are what really matters here -- an awe and amazement at the humbling largeness of the universe, and the realization that we are an extremely tiny part of that. That said, the title of this post is complete and utter shit, and doesn't do the strip any favors by bringing religious hatred into the discussion.

Well, Christians don't have to allow the poster to speak for them. Maybe some will weigh in here. Maybe this thread will turn into a really great argument about who's more humble.
