Why irony? Was it their wedding day?

No, but it's a free ride when you've already paid

edit: or a traffic jam when you're already late

What is seen: Banana slipping on a human.

What it is making fun of: Human slipping on a banana.

Definition of: irony

"Incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result"

Example: If you have a phobia of longs words you have to tell people that you have hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia.

It is ironic because the statement starts normally, and by the end one expects the phobia to have a short name. The irony arises from the fact that it doesn't.

Definition of: role reversal

"A situation in which someone adopts a role the reverse of that which they normally assume in relation to someone else"

What this image is not: The above image is not ironic because there is no normal, sane sequence leading up to the unexpected result. A banana walking up to an object, is already not normal. Furthermore, one already expects the banana to trip, since it follows the common act of tripping on a banana (done in reverse).

What this image is: Role reversal done for comedic purposes.

See: In Soviet Russia role reversal jokes (which are not ironic either).

Wait, was he wearing the banana suit for the purpose of not slipping, but it was the thing that caused him to slip?

Maybe the human on the ground was a non-slip human, but became slippery when it rained?

I think what people are getting at is that it's not irony, but an inversion.

It's situational irony, you fucking philistines. Go back to school.

Read the definition of situational irony and get back to me.

Simply put, a situation where the outcome is incongruous with what is expected. It is expected that a man should slip on a banana; this is obviously quite contrary to a banana slipping on a man, which is absurd.

How is this difficult?

Opposite of expected result, sir.

Had he been wearing the banana suit to avoid slipping, then the banana suit caused him to slip, you would have awesome situational irony.

For example, many people put bread into the fridge to make it last longer. This, ironically, shortened its lifespan.

Or, I was sick, so I took some medicine to get better. Turns out I was allergic to the medicine, and it made me sicker.

By your 'banana slips on a man' explanation, ironic would be putting a fridge inside some bread, or medicine taking a human.

So yes, it is an incongruity, but a specific kind. Not simply the opposite of what you'd expect to see, but an action with the result being the opposite of what you'd expect.
