Jim Jeffries on Dying (Wallpaper) (i.imgur.com)
submitted 6 months ago by IAMYourReason
[–]wrongsideofthewire 28 points29 points30 points 6 months ago
What Mr. Jeffries doesn't think about is those minutes, hours, maybe even days leading up to death. You know you're going to die and there is nothing you can do about it. I've seen many people at that point where they know they are taking there last breath and almost all of them are fucking horrified. As an atheist, this is the single scariest thought I can have; to live that moment when the switch is about to be thrown.
[–]sgtreznor 35 points36 points37 points 6 months ago
I've seen many people at that point where they know they are taking there last breath and almost all of them are fucking horrified.
I can't work out if you're either a terrible doctor, or an amazing serial killer ;)
[–]Sodfarm 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
Could be both.
[–]flying-sheep 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
he started his carreer in Todmorden, which is "deathmurder" (or "deathkill") translated from german…
[–]RenatoNulldia 7 points8 points9 points 6 months ago
I think Woody Allen put this best "I am not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it happens."
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 6 months ago
The only thing that scares me about dying is if I die while thinking "Fuck! I wasted the only existence I will ever have!"
I'm not gonna get all bent out of shape about the inevitable because I've spent a lot of time coming to terms with it.
The reason all the people you saw die were horrified is very probably because they spent their lives actively avoiding confronting their mortality.
[–]Pareve 9 points10 points11 points 6 months ago
Or because dying is incredibly unpleasant. There's a reason that they dope you to the gills in palliative care.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
Yeah I don't expect it to be an enjoyable experience, but I do think the horror of dying can be greatly mitigated by accepting it long before it happens.

But if you download your brain into a spaceship will the consciousness be you? Or will it be an identical copy that believes it is you while your particular consciousness is destroyed?
[–]Marc05 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
I read maybe half of that.
[–]iamfromouterspace 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I am a version of you, in the future and from outer space. A copy of you will visit planet pussey-i8 in 20 years.
[–]ncjenkin 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
You can become Planet Express Ship!
[–]Aussie_Batman 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Transhumanism ftw!
[–]the_die -2 points-1 points0 points 6 months ago
You can't accept something you don't understand.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
I can certainly accept that one day my brain will no longer be supplied with oxygen and my mortality will end, and I do accept it.
[–]metalmusicatheism 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Actually, I am not scared at all of the time leading up to death, because I know every minute is time leading up to death. I could die tommorow, or I could die next year. Just because I approach a common age for death doesn't mean I should be any more afraid of it than now.
[–]FTFTW 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
The very last time you will ever do something for the first time.
[–]newtothelyte 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
You sir, took the words right out of my mouth. Dying is something that lurks around in my mind and I end up thinking about once every week or so. I know its going to happen one day but I just can't seem to come to grips with it, sometimes it shakes me to tears. As an atheist, this is where nonbelief comes short. Maybe its one of those things you learn to come to grips with as you see family and friends die throughout your life.
[–]PeanutButterMarmite 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Here, you might like this.
[–]reddell 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago*
That's why you think about death and come to terms with it now instead of trying to not think about it until it's too late.
My plan is to process death as much as I can before I die and try to make sure I do the things that I want my finite life to stand for.
I think freaking out about death comes from anxiety associated with not understanding what's happening. The reality of your life suddenly hits you in the face and if you're not prepared for it, it can throw your mind into panic/ fight or flight mode.
[–]SlyFox28 9 points10 points11 points 6 months ago
As an atheist I think it makes me MORE scared of dying. Death is so complete, so final. I want to live for ever I don't want to just not exist. I never understand why Christians always pray to god to not let them die. I mean heaven is supposed to be so great why be scared of dying then?
[–]whereandwhen 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago
Actually, the finality of death and how frightening it is really helps me to empathize with religious belief. It doesn't justify it, though.
[–]FTFTW 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
I understand your feelings, and to some extent I feel the same, but to me I need death to be there. I want to know I'm dying and that at some point everything will come to a close because it helps me value everything I do now so much more.
I've had a lot of issues with depression throughout my life and the idea of existing forever is an unpleasant one. If I knew it went on forever I would feel trapped. The fact that I only have a limited time to exist makes me so much more interested in making the most out of my life. If I only get 80 years, and I'm already through 23 of them, then I might as well do the best I can at caring for those around me and finding meaning and pleasure in everything I can.
Kind of like going to Legoland. You don't really want to be there, if you leave early your family will be pissed, but it closes eventually so you might as well squeeze into a few rides, carry your little brother on your shoulders when he gets tired and eat a few weird things from the venders.
Maybe, if I was at Disneyland, I'd feel differently. But, I'm at Legoland and Legoland sucks.
[–]Revxx 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
I want to know I'm dying and that at some point everything will come to a close because it helps me value everything I do now so much more.
That really moved me for some reason. Thank you.
[–]Blackplatypus 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
If I knew it went on forever I would feel trapped.
Even worse, you would be. As your existence continues on, the chance of you becoming trapped in, say the middle of a star or underground or in the vast empty blackness of space increase to 100%
[–]SubtleMockery 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
"So I won't mine, wha-?"
[–]BigMacCombo 9 points10 points11 points 6 months ago
I'm scared to loose my conscious existence.
[–]Supervisor194 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
I am too, I really am. And yet I do it voluntarily and without trepidation every night.
Perhaps the word "permanently" would have been more appropriate, but then again, an infinity spent unconscious must seem like no time at all when it is you that is unconscious. I like to think that life is an infinite neverending series of (broken) experiences.
[–]Blackplatypus 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
While I agree with you, I'd like to add that you're not actually unconscious when you sleep. Many of the executive functions are switched off and you don't typically record most things to memory but you can still hear, feel, smell, tell that you need to pee etc.
That being said, people do regularly lose consciousness and your point is still one that I wholeheartedly agree with.
[–]BoD-heli 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
One thing I find a bit weird is that I can remember past events at all. it seems like if my consciousness left me at death I wouldn't even be able to remember the present. It's hard to explain exactly.
[–]imatreehugga 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
I had this huge block of text typed up, but hopefully this is just as sincere: You are not alone and I love you fellow wise man.

[–]Pareve 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago*
This is bullshit. I don't believe in an afterlife, but I fear death. I am afraid of no longer existing. I am afraid of being utterly obliterated. This fear is what motivates many to believe in an afterlife, and to accept religion. Attempts to rationalize away that fear is useless. The only people who don't fear death are people who don't think they can die. Those people are fools.
To quote the fine, atheist poet, Philip Larkin:
This is a special way of being afraid No trick dispels. Religion used to try, That vast, moth-eaten musical brocade Created to pretend we never die, And specious stuff that says No rational being Can fear a thing it will not feel, not seeing That this is what we fear - no sight, no sound, No touch or taste or smell, nothing to think with, Nothing to love or link with, The anasthetic from which none come round.
[–]kenotron 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago
I think you're projecting a bit too much. I can honestly say I don't fear death in the least. Every single time I fly in a plane the thought crosses my mind that the plane could crash, but the thought comes without any hint of fear. Worrying about it won't change the outcome no matter how hard I try. I haven't once dwelled on the fact that I am only temporarily alive. I have better things to do with my time, as do you.
Everything dies; even the sun and the universe itself will die eventually. That's the price you pay for existing: that one day you won't. Get over it and go enjoy yourself. You won't get another chance. Create something; learn things, then teach them to others. Laugh often. Enrich the lives of the other mortals on our slow march to non-existence, and it won't matter in the least that this is your only life, because it will be full of contentment. How could anyone ask for anything more?
[–]therationalparent 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I agree. There is a huge difference between not wanting to die (and I really don't!) and not fearing it. I don't fear death at all.
[–]Pareve -2 points-1 points0 points 6 months ago
I'm not saying one shouldn't enjoy life. I'm saying death and dying are fucking scary. Those aren't mutually exclusive ideas. I also hold that you do not fear death because you have never really experienced it. Spend some time at a hospice and then tell me what you think of death and dying.
Edit: "Death isn't scary because the sun is going to explode one day" is pretty illogical, natch.
[–]charlestheoaf 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Death isn't terrifying for me, but dying is scary to me - i.e. the pain and suffering that could lead up to death.
Death is, however, a great motivational force. I feel like there's a ton of shit that I need to get done before it happens!
[–]Pareve 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
True enough. I am motivated to create something that will outlast me.
[–]charlestheoaf 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Similarly, I see myself as part of the "global community" of humans, and I know that I wouldn't be here, and be as happy, if it weren't for everyone that came before me and contributed. When we all contribute positively back into society, the returns of our efforts can be exponential; others are able to benefit from our actions and contribute back again.
[–]kenotron 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
You're afraid of hypotheticals? That must be exhausting.
[–]SubtleMockery 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
If you're not, you lack a fundamental human thought process. It's one of the factors of our intelligence, that we can think ahead to hypotheticals in order to plan. We cannot "plan" for death, and so we are afraid.
[–]IAMYourReason[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I may not want death to happen, but that doesn't mean I fear it. Perhaps I regret, or even resent my own mortality, but that doesn't mean I have to fear death.
I think what Jeffries is trying to say is that he doesn't fear hell.
If he meant hell, he would have said hell. He said dying. It's a common enough sentiment among young atheists I've met. I think it's utterly misguided.
[–]IAMYourReason[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 6 months ago
I think you're missing my point. Is a bleak death more fearful, or is a death with the possibility of hell more fearful? Jeffries put it best, I think, "Anyone who's read that book knows you've done enough shit to go to hell."
Yes we're mortal. Yes we can be afraid of dying. But not in the sense that one might be afraid of hellfire if he or she is religious. It's not the same fear. That's the point I think he's making.
[–]Pareve -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
I haven't heard the rest of Jeffries' routine, so I can't really comment on it.

[–]tkmlac 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
I love this guy. I went to the Punchline in Sacramento, CA to see him. He was incredibly funny and there was an old Christian couple up front he dug into. The woman was really gracious about it, but the man got all pissy. Jeffries really nailed him for it.
[–]JohnWL 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
I totally agree with Jeffries on this. Yes, it will be frightening, but I figure it is more comforting with diluting myself with the thoughts of the afterlife. I mean, what a wonderful surprise it would be to 'wake up' from death in a white robe at the pearly gates, with my family on the other side...wait...I take that back...that kind of sounds terrible...
[–]grayziehobbes 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Death is the Great Equalizer. That makes me happy.
[–]SongBillong 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Another brilliant joke by Jim Jeffries, best atheist comedian imo.
[–]Eric_Snow 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Being dead will be just like before you were born. I think that's from South Park actually pretty insightful.
[–]awesomechemist 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
And southpark probably took it from the Mark Twain quote "I was dead for billions of years before I was born, and it didn't inconvenience me one bit." and it is likely that this sentiment had been expressed even before Twain.
Oh that's a great quote from twain, thanks. I just had never thought about death like that till I heard that on sp.
[–]Sojoez 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I take solace in the knowing that my dead body will help other people live longer (organ donor) and if I could I would ask my remains to be turned into fertilizer for plants.
I am an atheist and I'm terribly scared of dying.
I'm not scared of being dead for the same reason that Jeffries provided, but getting to that point is fucking terrifying and I'm certainly not happy about it either.
[–]darkangelx 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
They start advancing telomere therapy to reverse or stop aging. Chop chop i want to live forever too.
[–]doomslice 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I accepted death as an inevitable consequence of life, and therefor do not fear the actual death part of it (as to pain or suffering leading up to my death -- I have no idea how I'm going to die so how can I be afraid of that yet?).
What I do fear is putting loved ones through the pain of missing me after my death. I feel the pain of losing others close to me, so it is no leap to imagine that others feel the same way.
[–]reddell 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Dying and death are not the same thing.
[–]NewShinyCD 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I am not afraid of death; I am afraid of the way I could die. I don't want it to be a long agonizing one.
[–]LardAssHogan 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
David Cross did a bit about this in 1998 I believe, about necropheliacs, I couldnt find a clip on it but the whole show is awesome. It was an HBO special called, "The Pride is Back".
[–]devllen05 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I posted the video to this the other day: the entire (~9-minute) standup is absolutely hilarious:
http://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/oi721/jim_jeffries_talks_about_atheism/
I am disappointed that I will not live to see the technological wonders of our future. Look at how far we've come in just 100 short years. Imagine where we will be 100 years from now: Flying cars? Commercialized space flight? Computers that are hundreds of times more powerful than what we have today, and small enough to be implanted in your body? The wealth of new knowledge about our planet and universe that is bound to be discovered? I may be alive for some of these, but civilization will continue to advance after I die, and I will be missing out on some truly amazing advancements.
But on the other hand, I also won't be alive to witness any future wars, genocides, pandemics, natural disasters, etc. Something will eventually wipe human existence off of this earth, and I sure as hell hope that I am dead before that happens. I am positive that the process of extinction will be 1000% more terrifying than death itself.
