I wrote one a while back that uses the accelerometer to determine if it would be a good height to jump from. You simply need to throw the phone off of the roof, and it will report the results after. It was pulled from the app store because it "encouraged users to use the device in an destructful manner". Pfft.

[–]Iron_Maiden_666 14 points15 points ago

It's my fucking device, I'll use it however I want. Although personally, I wouldn't throw it anywhere (not even for science).

Lol, I threw mine once... bounced off the wall, battery went flying, and it still survives to this day.

Been working on it for 45 minutes and have constructed a very similar interface, leaving the function where the app calculates the approx distance of jump blank for now. Since the iPhone doesn't have a built in laser, what does Reddit suggest

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points ago

Camera autofocus, if it's available in the API, should give you an approximate distance.

[–]vu0tran 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most of the projects I work on hover around 200-1000 hrs between 3 developers and designer. 200 hrs on the lower end. This does not include QA/testing.

How long would this take? Well, the algorithm to judge the height will be really freakin' hard... I'll see what I can do and I'll announce to reddit when it's out. At the minimum, it takes 2 weeks for approval when it gets submitted to the app store though.

[–]Im_A_Praetorian 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think this would be possible unless you can identify an object of a fixed sized, for instance a dollar bill on the ground, and then calculate distance based upon scaling of how small the bill is.

or

a second camera where you can combine the 2 image with some sort of 3D modeling to determine the focus and the distance. So yeah, dollar bill approach would probably be easiest and least time consuming - i'd still think 100-150 hrs minimum.

[–]lumbago 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why two cameras? Take two pictures of an item from two different angles and use the accelerometer/gyro to figure out what the "base" of the triangle is. I've no idea how feasible this is, but the theory could possibly be, well, possible!

[–]Im_A_Praetorian 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think that the accelerometer and gyro would be enough to accurately measure the distance of travel. But what do I know. Maybe. This is why I'm not an awesome app developer

[–]SeeEmTrollin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, you see, if people are really using this app to see what would happen if they jump from a certain height and plan on actually jumping... well, this app probably isn't for you.

[–]aztecadam 1 point2 points ago

[–]Crazyblazy395 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you used an altitude and then cross referenced it with the height of the place you are at it may work

[–]monkeymad2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you changed it so the user was made to take a picture, then insert an object of known size (like a soccer ball) and scale it till it looked right, it would be easy. Otherwise, no.

Is the iPhone's camera capable of estimating depth to that accuracy? It doesn't seem likely to me.

[–]MagicallyVermicious 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It might be somewhat possible if the app has you wave the phone somewhat slowly so that it can capture photos as you move it, and do some image processing and math (trigonometry probably) to calculate approximately how high up you are. It can assume that you wouldn't be waving it more than the average armspan of a human, and can find a simple way to regulate how fast you wave the phone. Probably wouldn't be terribly accurate, though.

[–]flexiblecoder 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The iPhone has a built in accelerometer, doesn't it?

[–]Quazifuji 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I guess that would work. As long as you're just trying to get the depth to a static scene (as this app would be), you could simulate a 3D camera pretty easily. Although I don't know how accurate it would be. It probably depends on how accurately the accelerometer can be used for odometry.

[–]JabbrWockey 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes.

A developer showed me a demo of the software they were making that maps out 3D points in a room just from the shadows cast. It was damn accurrate - even picking out all of the people sitting at the bar and mapping them.

You know what's even more cool?

They are working with Toyota on an app that shows you how to change a tire. You look at the tire through your phone and it identifies all of the parts on a HUD and gives a step by step guide on what to remove, where to place what, etc.

It's DIY with your mobile device.

[–]Quazifuji 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmm, that's cool. I don't know if it's possible to be completely accurate going by shadows, but that's definitely a really clever way to do that.

[–]cypherreddit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think it can at all. It needs either two cameras pointing the same direction to determine distance stereoscopically or the single camera needs to be pointed at an object of a known size, such as a CompactDisk or a soccer ball to determine distance by relative size.

[–]darkrxn 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You may be right, idk, but many cameras Fourier Transform the image for sharp lines and sharp corners. If the image is blurry, it focuses farther a little bit; if the image gets blurrier, it changes direction, but if it gets a little more clear, then it continues until it passes the optimal focal point. When things stop getting sharper and start getting blurrier, the camera changes direction, and the lens is moving closer or farther from the focal point inside the camera. This has nothing to do with the size of an object, just optimizing angles and lines for the least blurry photo. This can be a pain if you are trying to focus on a person's face, because the geometry doesn't produce lines it produces gradients, but digital cameras have had special face-recognition priority focusing for many years. I don't know how that works.

TL; DR- you don't need two cameras or to know the size of an object; if the image is fuzzy, move the lens until it is clear. You know the concavity of the lens and its focal length

[–]cypherreddit 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This was brought up else where, but the problem is that you need a substantial optical focus/zoom for it to work and for most phone's the range is only a couple meters

[–]darkrxn 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah areseeuu posted it was 2.08m for iphone, I didn't scroll down far enough

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, tiny lenses like those on phones reach inifinity focus after a very short distance.

pronoob tip for lazy DSLR camera owners in decent lighting! Switch to aperture priority, stop down to as high an F as possible in the current lighting. Maybe turn the ISO up a bit to compensate. Most new DSLRs cope really well up to around 1600, you'd never know the difference when it comes to small prints and facebook snaps. Turn off auto-focus. Find out how to set your lens to infinity focus, and do so for the aperture selected. Don't get any closer than the distance it is set to. Congratulations! All your photos are as sharp as a box of knives!

[–]Quazifuji 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In most cases, yes, but other people have pointed out clever ways around this: using shadows, or just moving the camera and taking to pictures (wouldn't work on moving objects, but for this app the ground isn't going anywhere).

Wow, some of them actually seem feasible: this one, but also the ex-girlfriend radar, the Ultimate alert and the bathroom availability.

[–]LarrySDonald 0 points1 point ago

Some of the "always on" GPS systems (like Latitude, though dunno if Latitude specifically does) can already support Ultimate Alert. Also any other "send this text to anyone I know within x distance of me" or "send this text to any member of group Y within x distance". Dunno how well set up the various ones are though (in terms of setting up interest groups) and all rely on everyone using the same one and having it on.

Could potentially also be done with foursquare. Possibly also facebook (only on people who location track themselves on facebook).

I can think of a way to make this real with some modifications... the app could take two pictures, and requires that you hold your finger out 5 cm in front and keep it still. Then you tell the app where your finger is in both pictures and where two equivalent points on the ground are. Or better yet, it uses some image superposition and recognition to do this automatically.

[–]Kotton 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly, the existing hardware can't detect distance. A camera can't do that because it has no depth perception. A twin camera for 3D pictures à la 3DS might be able to do it. Other than that, the only thing I can think of is a laser used to detect distances like on those devices solely designated to calculate distance, but from what I understand, that's expensive as fuck.

[–]Im_A_Praetorian 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you could calculate the distance by seeing how an object of a known size scales smaller the further it moves away

You see, the way Reddit works is that it directs you to other places on the internet. This leads to a high amount of links that have content from other websites!

No, Reddit works by taking an image from another place on the internet, uploading it to imgur, and directing you to imgur.

I wonder.. With the single camera on the phone would it be possible to judge the distance somehow with software or would you have to have a second camera or laser or some sort?

15 feet won't break your ankles

[–]guest4763 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

20 broke both of them in catastrophic fashion, so I'd imagine 15 could too. Personal experience.

[–]dusters 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It just depends how you land. If you fall with no prior notice you have a much greater chance of getting hurt. 15 feet is a 5 yard drop. If you bend your legs on the fall you should be ok. Problems happen when you keep your legs stiff.

[–]guest4763 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Keeping your legs stiff is a recipe for disaster from any height. Just jump up in the air and see what landing stiff legged feels like, and that's a fall of 12" or so.

A 150+lb person in freefall for 15 feet generates a pretty tremendous amount of momentum. A tuck-and-roll strategy is one thing, but you can't just bend your legs and absorb it.

You can tell its shopped because of the skew. The screen is tilting slightly to the left while the phone is tilting slightly to the right.

[–]enthos 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How would it judge distance with only one camera?

[–]Backroll 0 points1 point ago

I once taught iphone programming at a summer camp (age 13-17ish kids). One of the more advanced kids developed an app that would tell you, if you dropped your phone, how far it dropped.

[–]bigmeats91 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

all iphones should come with that app, and apple will require you to jump after you agree to the new software update.

[–]opalorchid 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't jump! You have so much to live for!

Do a flip!

[–]rompenstein 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well that would only work if you're pointing it at the ground, have a pretty accurate GPS fix, and are in a location where the ground is fairly level.

I think my solution would work much better for small distances, i.e. less than 20 feet. Your would work much better for larger distances, given the above constraints.

EDIT: This was supposed to be a response to another comment.

Question: if this app was real, do phone cameras have the ability to gauge distances like this? (im a camera noob, forgive me)

[–]Krakenrider 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd like to say no. A laser would be needed or a second (for 3D) camera.

[–]BenCelotil 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suppose yes, with a point of reference on the ground (say a guessed unit of length of some object), and probably taking two image positions from a set distance apart laterally (take one pic, shuffle sideways a metre, take a second picture).

I couldn't tell you how accurate it might be, but that's my rough guess.

[–]mdickw 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You could get a pretty good idea from the focal length, assuming the camera on the cellphone even reports that info. This will be more accurate at shorter distances.

[–]Nosher 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If app is developed, I look forward to reading about legal cases where the person with broken ankles tries to sue the developer and Apple as s/he only jumped "because my Iphone told me to".
