There are like 12 hours of tutorials. How do you not understand what you're doing?

The tutorials are walls of text. Sorry but that's no good -- especially for a demo.

A) Sarcasm
B) I'm poking fun at FFXIII because, fuck, the first 12 hours are seriously a slow paced mesh of story and tutorial. If Square-Enix tried to hold your hand any longer they could be charged for prostitution.
C) The game really isn't difficult until you get to the "open world" part where much of the enemies and bosses you encounter require you to try/fail/try/fail... until you figure out the character/paradigm combinations that work best. Or, you could use a guide to figure out what paradigms to use, but then you're not playing a game anymore; you're just doing data entry, and where is the challenge or fun in that?

Nobody said it was difficult. It's just loads of random shit that essentially leaves you with nothing to do other than button smashing, assuming you're not having a seizure, of course.

Uh, yes, that is exactly what OP is saying. He is saying that after a few hours of playing, he still has no idea what he is doing. Ergo, the game is too complex, and therefore too hard, for him to understand.

Is FFXIII a good game? That's up to an individual's personal taste. I thought it was fine, even if it wasn't the kind of Final Fantasy game I wanted.

Is it random? No. There isn't a random encounter in the damn game. When you go into a fight you know exactly what enemies you are going to face. So, you have a lot to do. You have to decide which characters to bring into the fight. Which paradigms each character is going to start with, and you have to know if/when to switch between paradigms if the enemy changes attacks. There is more to do in FFXIII than a lot of previous FF games, which largely boiled down to:

Attack
Attack
Fireball
Heal
Summon
(REPEAT)

Is it a button masher? Uh, fuck no? If anything, it is the complete opposite of a button masher. You can and do go through many battles without ever hitting a single button. God of War III, that is a button masher, not Final Fantasy XIII.

Okay then, somebody link me to a game which makes you read walls of text and is good. Then go learn some reddiquette, morons.

My input on 13 vs 13-2.

It's fantastic when a company listens to fan feedback, the changes they've made so far are pretty awesome, and they've added some complexity to the battle system in addition to making it faster paced.

The strategic elements of the battle system that appeared late in FF13 now appear pretty early in 13-2, so the battles are way more bearable, fast paced and fun from the get go.

I LIKED but didn't love FF13... On the other hand the demo for 13-2 has me genuinely excited for the game, and they've done much more than what they've revealed in the demo, so I'm looking forward to all of that as well.

If I have one complaint it's that Noel looks like a generic Tetsuya Nomura character.

From what I've read you don't need to have played 13 to appreciate the new storyline. It's pretty much just a brand new story. One more note, if you think you have to just keep pressing x to win at ff13, you're doing it wrong.

From the demo...it seems they took XIII and added a sprinkle of God of War.

Indeed. Ff13's battle system strikes me as a conundrum: with automation of combat, I have little means of perceiving the flow of battle and controlling it. By the time I know something bad is happening, for instance, I'll try to recover using cure spells and buffers, but it will normally be too late. If I am in the nick of time, I only have direct control over a single character, and even then there's a likelihood I will have to implement a clunky Paradigm Shift before I can even begin to heal myself.

This battle system is like Windows Vista: I cannot do exactly what I want due to the software's design.

Create some custom paradigms. Sentinel with 2 medics is your best bet for survival. Commando or Sentinel with 2 Ravagers is best for filling the stagger bar. Once the enemy is staggered, use a 3 Ravager or 3 Commando paradigm (depending on party makeup and what the enemy is weak against). For the more lengthy fights later in the game, you will want a paradigm that allows you to buff up. So have a medic heal your party while the other two buff people.

Once you get used to it, the ff13 combat system is one of, if not THE best of any FF game. It gives you a lot of flexibility.

I agree, for all that it did wrong, the paradigm system is great (I only wish it saved your setup for any arbitrary sub-party so you don't need to keep resetting them). And the fact that AI does stuff for you makes buffing viable.

[–]KevyB 1 point2 points ago

Most of the time it's not the game that sucks, it's the player that's too shitty to handle it. (That applies to way more than just FF obviously)

[–]davvblack 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, it was also pleasantly hard. From midgame on, essentially every trashfight could kill you if you stopped paying attention.

The only disappointing aspect is that every single fight basically boils down to buff->stagger boss->hurt boss, switching into healing and buffing when you need them again.

I could have used a few more 'puzzle' encounters.

That final boss was unbe-fucking-lievably hard the first go round. That one move where he takes like 90% of your HP in one hit. It was definitely a surprise from the usually grind bosses. Gotta love my Sentinel 2 Saboteur paradigm, though. Vanille's poison will do the work for me.

Yeah battles are about as automated as a real time strategy game (Red Alert, Warcraft). Just because you aren't pushing the buttons to slash a sword doesn't mean it's not a strategic battle system.

As the player, you're issuing commands and managing the battle always shifting due to whatever battle conditions are happening.

FF13 had pretty sweaty palm gameplay that was intense, but it took forever to get that point because the battles in the first 15 hours are so easy and slow, but once that difficulty level amps up, it's amazing. That's squares fault. Great battle system, just took forever to get to that point.

Yeah, but I can barely remember those good parts, you know what I mean? At least the combat music was stellar enough to keep my attention. In ff13-2, on the other hand... it felt like taking a dose of Valium.

[–]faviang 0 points1 point ago

The paradigm shift transitions are so quick now, it doesn't feel slow anymore. I have to be honest in 13 I never felt like I had no control in the battle.... I always managed to get each party member to do what I want, I remember some 20+ minute boss battles that were intense as well.

Let's talk about the elephant in the room, where's that FF fanfare/victory music.

I tried my hardest to get through FFXIII but couldn't make it out of the 24 hour tutorial. Once you figure out the shift system the game goes from being a slight challenge to painfully easy. Almost to the point where if you order your shifts correctly you can pretty much roll through any fight with the same pattern and win. Just my opinions on the matter. However I can see why some people wouldn't like this. in previous team RPG's you essentially had each person on your party play a specific role and you would gear them accordingly to that role. in FFXIII it's almost like they threw this out the window as basically anyone on your team can play any role while some folks might like this, others might find it too confusing.

I played the XIII-2 demo over the weekend and quite frankly I just didn't enjoy it at all. It seemed to be almost exactly like XIII with a pokemon type aspect thrown in. Add to the fact that really all you have to do is manage your shifts and then hit autobattle and have the game play itself for you. Add in QTE's and suddenly it doesn't feel like i'm playing a FF game anymore. I like the FF series and i'm willing to go back and give the first XIII another chance. XIII-2? I'm just not sure yet. At least it's not X-2 which was essentially a glorified dress up game.

Woah. When I played that demo yesterday, it was the first time I had ever played FF and I felt exactly the same as this.

Just watching it gives me that feeling. I just miss the days of everything prior to Final Fantasy 10.

10 stands amongst the very best in the series, don't know what you're talking about here.

[–]EVILSUPERMUTANT 1 point2 points ago

And everyone else here will debate that, 7 or 6 was the best.

[–]faviang 1 point2 points ago

6 (for me)

I rarely meet anyone who didn't like 10. Top to bottom amazing game. A Great coherent storyline, an affable cast, solid voice acting, a plot you gave a shit about, FANTASTIC music, and an even better battle system.

Oh and 10 consistently polls at the best FF in the entire series in Japan.

All you do is mash auto battle. Then change paradigms once in a while.

I kid you not this is how the game is played.
