A GBA game made being an early 3DS adopter worth it?

wat

[–]regularmoe 9 points10 points ago

He was a REALLY early 3DS adopter.

...have you played Metroid Fusion?

[–]Dante2k4 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it's amazing. With the exception of "Other M" I'm generally a pretty huge fan of the entire series...

That being said, I don't see how Metroid Fusion, a GBA game that can be had on the cheap, made buying a 3DS at $250 worthwhile.

[–]future_sight 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...yeah, we don't really talk about Other M.

You're forgetting that there's 19 other wonderful games available for free, including Minish Cap, a Fire Emblem game, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, and Yoshi's Island.

[–]Dante2k4 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not that I've forgotten about them, it's just that I don't consider them justification for dropping that kind of money on a 3DS.

I guess I'm just being a little selfish. I am aware that there are PLENTY of younger gamers out there that never got to play these games, but still....saying a platform is worthwhile based on the merits of games from PAST generations? No....that's wrong. The games you listed are AWESOME.....but they're not 3DS games. 3DS doesn't get credit for those.

[–]panaceafatali 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It might not "get credit" for them, but it makes me very, very happy that I have all of them in my pocket when I wander around.

I think of it this way, Nintendo easily could have done nothing. They could have said "Oh hey, you bought the 3DS before the price drop? That's nice, fuck you." I mean, most companies would not have given a shit about the early adopters. Does it make buying the 3DS early worth it? Maybe.

[–]Indigoh 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too bad the only people who get this are the early buyers. My little brother got a 3DS for christmas this year and so we're not eligible to get these games for free.

I advised my family last christmas to wait till march to get him a 3DS when it came out, but they got him a DSi for christmas that year. Now we have 4 DS's. </FirstWorldProblem>

[–]cycopl 4 points5 points ago

There was a period of time when the price drop was first announced, Wal-Mart jumped the gun and lowered the price before the official date. I picked it up during that time and was still eligible for the Ambassador program. So that was pretty awesome. Got the $170 3DS and the free games.

[–]future_sight 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, over the years my family has just sort of accumulated DS's. I think we have three DS Lites.

[–]TheCornithian 2 points3 points ago

Amazing games for people who did not already experience them, but I've been a longtime Nintendo fan, and I have nearly all of the GBA games they are giving out already, making the early adopter plan useless to me. BUT I'm glad more people can experience those games. I just wish I wasn't left out to dry.

WHAT THE FUCK!!!

runs out the goddamn house to purchase a 3DS

Edit: turns around because target was close and comes home to good news

[–]Indigoh 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only people who bought the 3DS before August last year were eligible to get these free games.

[–]cpads 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sorry bro. these games come at a $70 premium that Nintendo likes to call 'The Ambassador Program.'

[–]funkme1ster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some places got wise, and started selling them at the new lower price two weeks in advance to entice people with the ambassador program.

"Look, you were gonna buy it anyways, but if you buy it for a limited time now for the same price you'd pay in 6 months, you'll get free games!"

A brilliant plan, since anyone in the know wasn't gonna buy a 3DS at the previous price for a few weeks anyways.

[–]ComplicitOwl -2 points-1 points ago

"Hey, kids! Wanna spend $80 on some NES and GBA games!?"

"YEAAAAAAAAAH!"

[–]Yoshi174 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are well worth the $80, I paid $30 each for nearly all those gba games when they came out.

i'd gladly fork over $80 to have them saved to my 3ds.

[–]ComplicitOwl 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, and I spent $1,200 on a TV a few years back, doesn't mean I'm ok with getting it for $600 now when its actual price is closer to $400.

[–]Yoshi174 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The system is well worth the $170 I spent. I don't think people should complain when they willingly bought it for $250 at release. The GBA games are a fine "compensation" in my opinion, manly because no one else can get them at the moment.

[–]superbatman42 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Other M was cool i personally think it was the best way for Nintendo to compensate for the Wii's lateness in the graphic department.

[–]Suzushiiro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I find it amusing that there are people who loved Fusion but hated Other M, given that Other M is basically just a next-gen remake of Fusion (Samus is sent to a space station containing a variety of simulated ecosystems that is revealed to be doing forbidden research on Metroids, spends the whole game being ordered around by Adam, game is extremely linear and story-heavy by Metroid standards, final boss is lifted straight from Metroid 2, etc.) The only real difference is that OM's story scenes were dumber/cheesier.

[–]ComplicitOwl 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just bought the game ten years before the 3DS came out, do I...do I get anything for that?

You have no idea. One day my friend came to my house and begged me to lend him some money for this new game super metroid. Being in junior high and strapped for cash, I didn't want to hear it but he finally convinced me to literally break my piggy bank and gather $60. Then I played the game, mind blown to this day.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Metroid Fusion...probably my favorite game of all time. First metroid game I ever played and got hooked because of it. I can still remember the first time you see the SA-X, the creepy music and then it zooms onto it's blank cold face...still gives me chills.

What would have made being an Ambassador even better is if they were like, "surprise bitches, here is Mother 3 in English." But, I know that would be too good to be true. Still, at least they added a Metroid game. Maybe that means they will announce a new Metroid game soon.

[–]devosion 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mother 3 is in english.

http://mother3.fobby.net/

Only problem is Nintendo didn't handle it, but its not like Nintendo to do something that fans want.

[–]future_sight 1 point2 points ago

The early adopters (people who bought the 3DS before the price drop) became part of the ambassador program, which granted them several NES and GBA titles. Highlights include the aforementioned Metroid Fusion, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, and Super Mario Bros.

[–]Rignite 2 points3 points ago

It doesn't help how ass backwards they made it to find them.

If you haven't already accessed the store, or didn't before a certain date, there's a lot of loops you'll have to jump through to get these benefits.

[–]Rignite 0 points1 point ago

Luckily I already had so it was rather painless.

They have just been sitting in my downloads list all snug and cozy this entire time. Been revisiting the cheesy fun that is WarioLand all night.

[–]razzo 1 point2 points ago

that makes you eligible for an "ambassador certificate", which itself does nothing, but you can download 15-20 virtual console games FOR FREE. Get on it!

[–]Opblaaskaas 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. All the NES games were garbage imo but the GBA games made it all worth it.

[–]hobodrew 2 points3 points ago

I'm starting to lose faith in Nintendo. The 3ds and Wii both seem like lost potential to me, and I have owned both since they were released. The most fun I was able to have with my Wii was after I homebrewed it to region unlock it and watch dvds. I wish that the 3ds wasn't region locked.

If we remove the first-party games (and games not released in America), I liked Monster Hunter Tri and that's about it. The rest of the games I feel like would be nice for a cheap diversion but I refuse to pay more than $10 for any of them. I do love Brawl, it's a shame that the online for it is utter shit.

[–]milkybee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For me my favorite third party was Fragile (it's has some flaws but has a lot of memorable things for me). You should also try sonic colors and 'a boy and his blob' (so much love was put in for abahb~) they were really fun and I see them sold pretty cheap around here :D

I didn't try monster hunter before, is the online good?

[–]hobodrew 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The online is good but it is basically the single-player game. Unfortunately, if you are already far in the single player before you go online you'll have to do the same quests over again. It was funny for me because I had an awesome sword-axe and armor but was fetching mushrooms.

[–]devosion 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. If Nintendo things I will subsist on decent first party titles released once every 3 years they are nuts, and equally nuts if they thing im going to buy a 3DS and Wii U after such a lackluster Wii performance.

[–]MythicVoid 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Zelda OoT, Mario 3D Land, Starfox, Mario Kart 7, plus Luigi's Mansion, Metal Gear, and if rumor has it, two Zelda games and two pokemon games. Yeah, there are no decent first party games coming out at a reasonable rate.

[–]hobodrew 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If we consider new games (i.e. ones that I don't have for my N64), then the only ones out right now worth buying are MK7, Super Mario 3D, and Super Street Fighter. The 3ds has been out for almost a year now and it is attempting to sell me games I already own a higher price than what I may have originally paid for them. I always praised Nintendo for their innovation, but that alone is not enough. They need to start making high quality games at a reasonable price and for the love of God get third-party support.

[–]devosion 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why would you buy a 3DS to play a gba game? And where the hell is my Metroid: Dread, if that came out for 3DS maybe i'd shell the cash out.

[–]drew-face 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

well none of us who were early adopters bought it to play GBA games. it's honestly just a nice little perk that was completely unexpected and awesome.

[–]sloopslarp -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. Most of us in the program bought 3DSs way before the ambassador program was announced.

[–]asassin91 1 point2 points ago

DS Lite (used) - $75

-or-

GBA SP (used) - $33

Metroid Fusion (used) - $12

$87 or $45 compared to $250. What exactly makes this "worth it?"

To expand upon this point:

F-Zero Maximum Velocity (used) - $5

Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advanced 3 (used) - $13

The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap (used) - $29

Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones (used) - $20

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (used) - $25

Mario Kart: Super Circuit (used) - $12

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong (used) - $12

Wario Land 4 (used) - $10

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames! (used) - $13

for a grand total of $226 (DS Lite) or $184 (GBA SP). For another $64, you can buy the NES Classics GBA versions of half the NES Virtual Console games, bringing the total to $248 by going the GBA SP route.

tl;dr - Buy a GBA SP and the Ambassador games off Amazon instead of being a 3DS early adopter, save $2.
