He is lovesick romantic. He would have grasped any smallest of coincidence as a sign of romantic destiny. That was the WHOLE point of the movie.

Man, I went on when of those a month bus-tour through europe and our tour leader picked that song as our 'wake-up song', meaning it was played really loudly whenever we are about to have a pit stop. It was the BEST THING EVER!

Now every time I hear that song I feel really happy... and want chips...and feels like peeing...

"Just because she likes the same bizzaro crap you do doesn't mean she's your soul mate."

apparently OP didn't pay much attention to the movie

i can see why though, it's still a fun movie even if you don't try to analyze and understand the characters

[–]venport 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a dumb movie if you don't analyze the characters. However once you take a look at their characters and what they are feeling and more importantly how he is an unreliable narrator giving lies, misconceptions and half truths to the audience you realize this is a great example of how we lie to our selves about relationships.

ewitz says "Both characters made me want to hit my head against the wall nonstop." They should, that's part of the point. She is staying in a relationship because they share interests and he has places her on a pedestal making her the "perfect" woman for him.

Don't feel so bad friend, so am I. I think the overall message of the movie is not 'stop being a romantic sentimental twat' but rather 'know when your significant other is no a romantic sentimental twat like you.' :P

The End

[–]SpaceJocket 103 points104 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Recently watched this with the gal friend. We sat there and analyzed their personalities. JDL at least has goals, friends, and seems generally naive but good natured. Not the most intricate character but decent.

Zooey/Summer on the other hand was a free spirit.....

We don't see her friends, she doesn't seem to have any aspirations. If I had to guess her free time was probably spent looking at the wall and watching old VH1 music videos or something.

We decided that the Autumn girl he meets in the end displayed more character in two minutes than Summer did the entire movie.

[–]rexington_ 217 points218 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a reason for that. In this kind of relationship-which happens often in real life-the guy isn't actually in love with the girl. He's in love with this conceptual version of her based on the one or two attributes he's latched onto (the smiths, for example) and all the things he thinks that attribute implies.

The movie doesn't show what she's really like, because it's illustrating how delusional and selfish JGL really is.

[–]SpaceJocket 113 points114 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree entirely. It's just annoying when I encounter people who describe the Summer character as being the ideal girl.

You want a girl with cursory indy musical tastes who enjoys being vague?

Try college.

[–]admiralallahackbar 39 points40 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is more or less rexington's point; some guys describe Summer as the ideal girl because a lot of guys see the Summer character as the ideal girl.

The Smiths are considered by many to be one of the forefathers of the punk movement. Smiths vs Ramones was an old debate in the punk scene, who were the true fore fathers of the punk movement. no one could really say so the debate continued.

It's stupid fucking hipsters thinking that somehow a band who helped start a movement a mere 30 years ago became somehow "underground." you listen to the smiths, so underground. No, they were one of the most popular bands of their fucking time especially in their fucking circles.

[–]AliDimayev 0 points1 point ago

I think that is what is happening to me right now; there is this girl I really like but when I sit down and think about it logically, we don't have that much in common and by all accounts I really shouldn't like her. But I still can help it...

[–]indiejesus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tom was struck by his own delusional beliefs here. Wanting to feel in "love", "happy", were just himself riding on the fact that a girl who shared his tastes could fulfill this. Longing for "love" so long, gave him the idea that almost any girl who shared many things in common could be "the one". Summer was a mere feeling to him. Many people go through this "Summer Effect".

What about "Jiggle" as a mnemonic device. JGL. It's important you get this.

[–]indiejesus 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't go ahead and say that. We see the movie from a subjective point of view of Tom. The point of the ending was to leave the situation the same way life leads us. We don't know what will happen, just like Tom doesn't know what will happen. The unpredictability. Anyway, the Summer character was meant to be shallow and superficial as seen from Tom's point of view. His own mind overlooked this because of its "goal" to find "the one". The ending is not about Autumn really.. Tom will probably go on to meet many more girls like her. The ending is about his realization that life is not controlled by a higher being (for him, it would be love), but it is controlled by unpredictability and in a way, he controls his destiny.

[–]poliphilo 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doesn't JGL go to a party populated by her friends? Not that we get to know them, but she does seem to have friends; it's just that JGL doesn't seem that concerned with them.

[–]SpaceJocket 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hard to say. We could easily assume they were the husbands friends. There isn't really anything showing her having relationships outside of JGL. Besides the quick montage of past lovers.

[–]underattack86 13 points14 points ago

Well that's because Summer is a pure MPDG, she's designed solely for lonely emo wish fulfillment. She exists only for us to fantasize about having a manic pixy dream girl of our own to help share our burdens without having any consequential thoughts or feelings of her own.

Ringo was the best actor and arguably the best 'Beatle', in the sense that he embodied the public image of the Beatles as 'cheeky chaps'. I think he's great, but not because of his musical abilities.

[–]vadergeek 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ringo has a certain charm to him. He's not awful. I suppose if you weren't swayed by the intellectual, the charming one, or the ability to play seemingly any stringed instrument that's name ends phonetically with -itar, then I could understand.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies! Being a hopeless romantic young man myself I saw many similarities between my own experiences and thus movie. Fall head over heels in love with a girl, she considers us 'just friends' even though 'friends' don't bang, and spend a long ass time trying to get over her after it culminates to the breaking point. Lost 2 years of my life sleeping with strange and getting drunk to oblivion.

There are some movies I watch and I can see the filmmaker using the medium to rather obviously tell you about his/her own personal taste. I find it somewhat refreshing, but I also know that certain scenes exist solely to facilitate their love of the Smiths, or to make a Thundercats reference, or slip in an Evil Dead 2 or Vanishing Point shoutout.

I don´t know if I´m gonna watch this movie but I am curious about something. Based on the fact that the counter resets and other character developments did he learn his lesson or is he doomed to repeat the same mistake again.

[–]insert-username-here 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that's the point of it being so ambiguous. But he gives a knowingly sly smile at the camera, breakin the fourth wall as the credit music rolls. I think it implies that while he does tend to fall hard and fast for a girl, he's learned a little something. Sorry for any grammar/spelling I'm typing this on my iPod.

I took it merely as a sign of him actually getting over her. I had an experience a lot like his, unfortunately, and one day, it just hit me and I got over it. Later that year I watched this movie in film class and was blown away by how close it came to what I went through, although I'm sure a lot of people identified with this movie.

[–]hacelepues 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The gender trends with regards to this movie are pretty interesting. Most guys I know really enjoyed it and could easily relate to Joseph GL's character.

Most girls I know (asides from the ones who "didn't get it" and still believe that it's a cute love story) didn't really like it. I "get it", it's the whole hopeless romantic=DOOM deal, but I don't like (500) Days. Not to mention, Summer is an empty shell of a woman who is impossible to relate to. I'll watch it, but I don't really enjoy it.

I guess it just really speaks to guys in a way I have trouble understanding.

When I find someone who loves the smiths I first check if they're gay, they usually are and we become bestfriends.

I'm bias, my first tattoo was morrissey lyrics. When I went to his show a few month ago I had nosebleed seats until a promoter type guy saw my outfit. I just had the glasses and a really old smiths shirt. He gave me and my friends wrist bands to the pit. I got front row right next to these two guys that travel going to all of morrissey's shows. They knew the set list and tried to make a scramble to the stage, didn't make it but they got close.

I still thought OP's post was funny despite how much I've let slip about my morrissey fandom.

I just think if you're a celebrity then you perpetuate this image of yourself, and to be successful that image has to be representative of something. Zooey perpetuates this image representative of a cute, modern, attainable, and coy girl. Female celebrities have to be a sex symbol. I'm certain she wouldn't be successful if guys didn't want to fuck her. My point is that she's just a plastic little thing developed by PR consultants.

not to mention a shitty actress. the ditzy-doe eyed schtick got old real quick when she used it in every movie of the past decade. she was the worst part of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

I reckon she's a good singer. Better singer than actor anyway IMHO.

I didn't like this film at all. My girlfriend is an architect and disliked it even more. I probably didn't "get it" but I just didn't understand the pretension of the characters. If there was less of that it may have been okay. It wasn't cinema.

I'm pretty sure that the only people I know who like this movie, are self interested women who identify with the main character as a totally desirable, yet unattainable female who chews up men like bubblegum.

LOL fuck that movie.

Anyone else?

Just imagined Gordon-Levitt with Archer's voice.

To be honest, I first connected with my now fiancee over our shared favorite tv show and favorite band.

Obviously we've since connected in a much deeper way, but it's nice to share those kinda things.

Why do people feel such a sense of entitlement over the things they like; regardless of how you felt about the movie, this is a funny picture. Bravo, OP.

The reason I didn't like that movie is because I think Summer is a real bitch. She doesn't believe in love, yet she is still in a relationship? That doesn't make sense.

YES! Thank you! I am the only one in my group of friends that did not fall for Zooey - I found her so unlikable in this film - 'oh I like The Smiths and I am really fucking quirky'...no...please no. The only thing worse than this film are its teenage 'hipster' fans who think Morrissey is the be all and end all of music.

You missed the point of the film. Also, stop labeling everything "hipster". It makes you sound obnoxious.

I didn't miss the point at all; I just really do not understand the fascination with Deschanel and The Smiths. But fair enough, this film does make me angry so sounding like a dick was inevitable :/

She's not supposed to be likable. You're feeling exactly how the director wants you to feel about her. Tom is so desperate for her to fit into this vision he has of the perfect girl that he ignores her flaws. Just because they chose to use The Smiths as the thing the little coincidence he obsesses over doesn't mean you have to like The Smiths. It's a plot element.

This movie sucked bad - and generally I try to give movies that someone recommends me a fair shake. I made it 10 min into this one.

The film was bareable until he met the girl at the end and she revealed her name. That was just about one of the cheesiest lines I've ever heard, and that's when i nope'd out of the film. Granted it was the last scene, but that'll teach them.
