Can you imagine if the person building this device got a spam text message from the carrier during construction? That would be fantastic.

Here's an important question: If you're wearing a suicide belt, why do you need someone else to remotely detonate the belt? Wouldn't it be ten times easier to make a manual detonator, like some switch or something?

[–]daywaster 121 points122 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because they can't always be sure that the person enlisted as the suicide bomber will go through with it.

Having a remote detonator means that the bomber won't be able to back out at the last second.

[–]DrPain762 106 points107 points ago

Then why wouldn't they be homicide belts?

[–]AllUrMemes 147 points148 points ago

A lot of suicide bombers freeze up at the moment of truth. Thus most 'suicide vests' don't rely on a user-operated push-button detonator. They have either a timer, or, like the article says, a secondary operative who detonates it remotely.

Many suicide bombers aren't the radical 'true believers'. Terrorist groups will 'recruit' bombers with all sorts of tricks- they may pay the bomber's family a cash reward; they may be coerced with threats of violence on the bomber's family, etc.

Women are often used because (1) they are easily controlled, (2) they are considered expendable by some cultures, and (3) they are less likely to be stopped/searched.

It's fucked up.

[–]Astroid 41 points42 points ago

[–]DefinitelyRelephant 96 points97 points ago

Children and animals are also used.

One tactic explained to us when we deployed was surgically putting a bomb inside a live donkey or mule and sewing it back up.

If you see a donkey acting strangely out in the middle of the road, it's probably a bomb.

tl;dr - if you see anything in the middle east, it's probably a bomb

[–]too_lazy_2_punctuate 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

thats what i remember from the numerous briefings before going into iraq they pretty much said the country is full of trash piles and that any one of these piles could have a bomb in it so it wasnt so reassuring when on my first patrol all i saw were piles of trash everywhere and i was like oh yeah i would put a bomb in there too if i was a terrorist

Wouldn't there be a way to spoof this: Have a mine/ied sweeper with a GSM radio tower on it, broadcasting an sms/call to all numbers in a localised area?

They could broadcast from a distance and know that they could set off all the phones within a 100 meter distance?

Or the reverse of that, wouldn't a GSM jammer work in this situation? (like the kind they have in posh restaurants to stop patrons using their phones while at dinner?)

[–][deleted] 98 points99 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or the reverse of that, wouldn't a GSM jammer work in this situation?

They've got jammers. Unfortunately some insurgent groups started setting the things up to go off when they lost signal.

[–]myne 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Spoof a tower. Detect all connected numbers, dial each (or not).

The phone will always pick the tower with the best signal.

Pretty sure that's how a famous hacker was caught (Japanese or in Japan, or by a Japanese man)

[–]-andor- 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kevin Mitnick was finally detected by Shimomura following his signal from some telephone towers he was connected to...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, they set the bombs to explode when the frequencies the jammers used were jammed. There's no need for a constant signal to the bomb, just a detector that notices the signature of a jamming device.

[–]schnp 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Talked to a guy a while ago who was on a flight crew in the Air Force. The unit he was assigned to would fly a plane over that broadcast on all frequencies to blow any bombs in the area. Said they hit a bomb making factory once.

[–]redonculous 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Awesome! You wouldn't expect them to have the phones attached to devices switched on though... I guess health and safety aren't top priority in bomb making factories!

[–]schnp 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Somehow most regulators tend to overlook the bomb making factories.

[–]kcg5 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They do that at posh places? They shut down the symphony at the MET recently for a cell phone ringing. Never knew about all the jammers and stuff..I'd hope we had thought of all that.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's because iirc they aren't legal for anyone outside of law enforcement. This gets brought up for schools all the time with no cell phone policies. It creates a bigger safety issue than it is worth.
You're more likely to see a wire mesh in the construction, which is quite a bit more... legal. See: Faraday cage.

[–]genericuser1289 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, vehicles have electronic countermeasures like this and they work. It really just forces the devices to use a mechanical trigger. On the other hand you can also trigger a device once it gets jammed. Let's say they know the jamming distance and the average speed of a convoy, you can setup a delay once the phone is jammed and get a pretty effective detonation if the explosive is large enough. That's why all the ECM stuff is classified.

[–]Excentinel 21 points22 points ago

[–]hlfshell 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was him before his tragedy, getting into the phone booth when life is good.

He lost the memory of his life from that moment onto his current, where the tragedy transformed him into a terrorist. I guess it's the result of the shock of the bomb blast. Etc.

[–]ColonicIrritation 30 points31 points ago

You could set up thousands of auto-dialers and blow up all the homemade bombs while they're being rigged.

[–]apophenic 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why would they have the phones on while they're rigging them up? That's just asking for an accident. I'm sure they turn them on right when they place the bomb.

There, bomb's done, time to hook up the phone. Okay, red wire is the fake one to fool anyone who doesn't know what they're doing, green wire goes to the blue switch, blue wire to the circuit board, circuit board into the ringer output and......DONE, we have a bomb! Let's go put this somewhe--

bleep bleep bleep

--wha? OH FUu--KABOOOM

[–]CrosseyeJack 19 points20 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The red wire is connected to the anode of the optocoupler to isolate the two parts of the bombs circuit (Phone running at 3v3, the rest of the circuit running at a higher voltage/current for the detonator).

Cutting the red wire would stop the optocoupler from sending the base of the transistor high and completing the circuit on the detonator side when the phone rings.
A design like this is very basic. Personally I would go for interfacting with the nokia's data bus.

[–]Gyrant 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Note to self: never troll CrosseyeJack, he can make bombs.

[–]jeremycole 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And then your bomb would fail to detonate because you failed to account for the noise on the data bus while the GSM radio was transmitting, or there was a bug in your code, or...

Pretty sure they use this design because it is basic.

Reminds me of an old Twilight Zone (or was it Outer Limits?) episodes I saw awhile back. The plot line was a assassin sent to kill a turncoat. He knocks him out in a hotel room and if the guy can survive without setting off the trap before dawn then he gets a phone call saying he wins and goes free. The trick is that the phone itself is the trap and as soon as he answers it the bomb will go off.

Excellent episode. Need to find the name of it and the season.

Ok long story short. We were on patrol in baghdad one night. we parked where some one had executed two men and left the bodies in the garbage. I stayed in the humvee as a dismounted patrol went down the alley near the bodies. i thought I saw another body in a trash pile near the humvee so I called up another soldier to check it out. I couldn't leave the truck as I was the gunner Sure enough there was a third body in the trash and as the soldier came up close to my humvee to talk to me about what he saw he tripped over something in the gutter. He bent down to see what it was then took off running back to his humvee. He screamed over his radio that it was an IED and to peal ass out of there. So we burned rubber down the road out of range of the device. (I later learned it was a 155 arty round, which is pretty fucking big) EOD comes out and difuses it with a controlled detonation. They recovered a cell phone from the blown up device and the told us the next day that who ever put it there had been calling the phone the whole time. It either didn't go off because of our jamming equipment that disrupts cell and radio signals or it wasn't wired right....

TL DR: Sat next to bomb unawares while it was trying to be activated = really close call

Oh yeah the next day we were able to triangulate the signal of the cell that was making the calls and snag that a-hole. Took us all night but we had him in Iraqi prison in time for us to get breakfast.

Yeah that was it I believe. Like I said it was dark and I never got a good look at it but that's what I was told later on. There was also the scare when EOD told us it was leaking some scary looking fluid so they had to test for chemical agents. Yikes! Turned out to just be sewage water from the gutter. Duh.

[–]gangstabillycyborg 9 points10 points ago

Contrary to "The Hurtlocker" very few devices are defused in the field by EOD. Most of the time they're just set off from a safe distance.

Remote detonator for a bomb. You call the phone that is hardwired to the bomb, and the bomb goes off. It looks like it malfunctioned, and didn't detonate when the phone received the call.

[–]aven440 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I imagined the bomb was diffused, and then the phone got a call. Hence the "Close Call"

[–]Perryn 78 points79 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If that were the case (as opposed to bomb not going off when called) he should have answered it. "Hello? Yes, this is bomb."

The opto triggers the relay which closes the circuit on the detonator. What transformer? You mean that white thing? That's a relay. The blue and black thing is a switch, presumably to arm it.

[–]ItsDijital 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The circuit is isolated from the phone via the 4n35 opotocoupler. They probably have another battery on board to flip the relay and provide the voltage/current needed to detonate.

I looks like there is no resistor on the input of the optocoupler (unless it's in the phone, but it would make more sense to be on the board). Whoever made that probably forgot about it and immediately burnt out the internal LED of the coupler (optocouplers are especially easy to burn out too) upon hooking it up.

[–]kiantech 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Great thing about using a nokia like this for a bomb is that you can reuse the phone after the bomb goes off.
