Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It's kind of a tradition. In 1977 Spielberg sent this to Lucas: http://imgur.com/ipWna

Does this mean that Cameron sent himself a letter in 2009?

It's kind of funny because according to IMDB, Star Wars(1977) is 3rd in All-Time USA Box office for $460,935,665. Although, it does say that these figures were not adjusted for Inflation (i.e. the value of the dollar), which comes out in 2010 a shitload more.(I want to say 3.7x more but don't trust my math)

[–]iDubes 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I understand how much the movie makes is ultimately the most important thing. I do not understand why they don't measure the success of movies in terms of ticket sales. Whouldn't it get rid of the inflation confusion?

[–]gerken 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now now. That would prevent a perceived continuous increase in movie success. And that would be bad press.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can't do this either (sadly) as the number of tickets sold has moved a lot. In the past (think 40s, 50s) people went to movies all the time because there were no other ways to see movies and far fewer TV shows. VCRs, DVDs, cable TV, and Netflix have all dramatically eaten into the number of movies the average american sees each year.

[–]not_very_creative 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok, for the studios, the box office is the most important thing, however, I think starwars was way more creative and innovative than Titanic Or Avatar. They will be remembered as the top office box record movies, but I doubt they will ever have the impact starwars had/have.

But that's just my opinion

This is one of the highest scoring pictures of all time on r/pics. It even has the exact same title. Looking at this guy's posts, it's literally just the top pictures reposted, as the OP's name suggests.

[–]JangSaverem 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Reddit over a large area is either dumb, blind or have never been to the internet to have not realized OLD reposts that tend to reoccur every month or so....or hell in some cases HOURS between.

It ist hard to slap a picture or a link into the search bar and figure out a repost. But thats the thing. People repost because its usually guaranteed retard proof Karma.

OP's account reminds me of a year ago after the Digg Invasion, a bunch of guys made a bunch of repost-bots (i think it was somethingawful that did this, not too sure though) to prove that anything can get upvoted now that Digg has failed and moved to reddit, as sort of a social experiment type of thing. Whoever got the most karma at the end of the week would win. They all had tens of thousands of karma at the end.

It was pretty embarrassing, and this is actually right when the admins took off the slogan up there at the top which read "reddit.com: what's new online!" because it probably made an embarrassment out of them.

Ah, reddit history. A sad, yet intriguing thing. Though sometimes I wish we could have the old pre-digg reddit back :)

[–]Blues39 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love it, but for the historical characters in it and the accuracy of the boat itself. There is also something about watching it get destroyed through a long slow process that I find quite captivating.

On the other hand, I could care less about Jack and Rose.

[–]LastEmperor 2 points3 points ago

I didn't mind it as a movie. It was well performed and directed. I agree however that it didn't deserve the praise it got. Underneath it all, the actual story was very cliche.

[–]definitelynotaspy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think it sucked. I actually think it was quite good.

But should it be the number one grossing film of all time? Should it have won 11 Oscars? No on both counts. The first accomplishment demonstrates the buying power of teenage girls and lonely housewives and the second demonstrates what a sham the Academy Awards are.

[–]higherlogic 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As opposed to the buying power of geeky teenage boys and lonely 35-year-olds who still live at home? Doesn't matter who bought a ticket, sales speak for themselves.

[–]definitelynotaspy -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True enough. For what it's worth, I don't think Star Wars "deserves" to be the number two or three or whatever it is now grossing film of all time, either and I love Star Wars. In an ideal world, the best movie would make the most money and the best actors would win all the awards.

My main points are that Titanic is overrated, though quite good, and the Oscars are a sham.

[–]mattlantis 4 points5 points ago
