Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I heard 99% percent of the buttons are fake. The only real ones are the big red ones.. well according to television that is..

Well, why would the television lie to us? Just like the internet, we can always rely on the internet.

Also according to television... The control panels becomes extremely explosive in an emergency and will probably kill an extra.

on the way up, riding 6.6 Million pounds of thrust, guidance was entirely automated. No pilot could have the reflexes and to accurately direct the STS up into a desired orbit.

Once in orbit, the Solid Rocket Boosters discarded and the three Space Shuttle Main Engines having consumed 146000 gallons of LOX and 395000 gallons of LH2 the Orbiter was left with it's two Orbital Manuvering System pods, each capable of accelerating the Orbiter at a fraction of 1g

Download OrbiterSim and try it out.

Not a sports car by any means, more comparable to a cargo van.

Still, for all of the problems and limitations the Shuttles had, they are pretty damn marvelous machines.

I am going to out myself as a bigtime nerd.

Many, many moons ago, in the early 80's, when I was but a wee little nerdling, I wanted more than anything else to become an astronaut. I owned a copy of a book (which I, of course, can no longer remember the title of) all about the Space Shuttle. It had many of the checklists and procedures actually used on the real Shuttle. The book even included a multi-page fold out diagram of the cockpit showing most, if not all, of the switches, buttons, and instruments.

My friend and I made a mockup of the cockpit which included many of the more important instruments and switches. We had much of the cockpit layout and function memorized and practiced "launches" to keep ourselves entertained.

Then the Challenger disaster happened. I was in 7th grade, Mrs. Mayfields Social Studies class when it happened. I knew where they were in the flight sequence. I knew what was going on with the boosters and the orbiter itself. I knew the ramifications of what had happened. It was nothing less then devastating to me. Until this point, I had the impression that NASA in general, and the astronauts in particular were nothing short of Gods. They were my ultimate heroes, and this was the first time I can recall in my life that I saw one of my heroes revealed as a mere mortal.

To this day, I don't know how I got home from school. I know I came home early, but I have no recollection of leaving class, calling my parents, or anything else; I assume I was in a state of shock. I do remember this as the first instance of being absolutely glued to the news coverage for an extended period of time. I know my parents did not make me change the television or even leave it for meals, and they kept my younger siblings out of the room so I could watch all of the coverage uninterrupted for the rest of the day and most of the next.

When I finally pried myself away from the television, I calmly packed away my "cockpit" and moved on from that dream. After that day, I knew the only way I would visit the stars is through a telescope in my backyard.

TLDR: I was (and I guess technically still am) a nerd, you made me tear up a bit.

I read that the original Macintosh's (circa 1984) had more computing power than the Space Shuttle.

The fisheye is necessary because of how small the flight deck really is.

Last summer I went out to visit my mom in Texas. While we were there, we visited NASA in Houston, and one of her friends who worked on the Space Shuttle simulator was able to get us in. We actually went into the real simulator used to train astronauts, and went through a takeoff, engine failure, and landing back at Canaveral, all with one of the simulator instructors. At the end of it all, we got to keep our report cards, which told us how good our landing was, including speed on wheels down, amount of pressure put on the landing gear, and how far off from the center of the runway we ended. It was a tremendous privilege, as the program was just two missions away from being shut down.

I may never actually get a chance to go into space, but I can honestly say that I've come closer to flying a spaceship than I could have ever imagined when I was watching Star Trek: TNG in middle school.

Is it weird that I actually find this pretty straightforward?

[–]raynman37 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really. It's designed like a plane. I'm sure if you took the time to read all of the descriptions on switches and gauges you'd get used to it quick.

The problem isn't the orbiter, but the total tards on the ground who make it unsafe.

Orbiting upside down. They are not flying, for flying implies lift. They are at orbital speeds.

You say that like it's supposed to be intimidating. I would kill to pilot that. I had to decide long ago not to put all my eggs in one basket and accept that I'd probably never get a chance to, but looking at pictures like this still make me regret that a bit.

[–]MystrE 1 point2 points ago

Well, considering that there are an infinite number of ways to build a spacecraft, you're probably right.

But the Shuttle was originally designed in the late 60s and early 70s, and the cockpit design was similar to aircraft cockpit designs of the same era. Look at photos of the cockpit of a 707 or 727, and it will look very similar (aside from the "glass cockpit" upgrades the Shuttles got in the late 90s/early 00s, of course).
