Yes, sex under the aurora borealis. This will be part of my honeymoon. If I ever decide to get married that is.

I got married at Kakslauttanen, they have a chapel made from ice, and these glass igloos (as well as proper igloos and lovely log cabins),..

It is a pretty awesome place to be :D

At least the glass igloos sound warmer - "The glass igloos have been built from a very special thermo glass. For this reason, the temperature inside an igloo remains constant at normal room temperature. This also prevents the glass from becoming frosted, hence keeping the view clear even when the temperature drops below -30C."

It doesn't really make a difference below -10c. The snow just gets crinklier and your breath freezes your beard faster.

[–]mechesh 23 points24 points ago

As someone who has lived in Alaska, it does indeed make a difference. A huge difference.

I live in Finland and to me it doesn't make a difference.

[–]mechesh 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

how cold does it get in Finland? In alaska -34c is not uncommon. There is a big difference between -10c and -34c as well as -56c which is about the coldest I experienced -67c w/ wind chill. So to say no difference under -10 is a very broad and i think wrong statement.

For the F people -3c4 is -30f. -10c is 14f. -56c is -70f and -67c is -90f.

[–]JonesBee 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah my bad, maybe not that cold. I'll rephrase, it doesn't make any difference in Finland. There has never been so cold that I haven't hopped on my bike. -30c was the lowest I remember from last winter, so around -45c with windchill. The lowest temperature last year was -42c but I don't live that north. I'd love to experience -56c.

[–]mechesh 1 point2 points ago

that all being said. after -34c i would wear shorts at -10.

[–]mommathecat 20 points21 points ago

-5 is a hell of a lot warmer than -30.

I slept at 4,000m in Peru last year. It pretty much was cold as shit. Condensation on the tent was frozen when I got up in the morning. The mistake I made was not wearing every single thing I had to bed. Which I most definitely did do the next day.

[–]mainsworth 4 points5 points ago

It's actually better to sleep with as few layers as possible. It's also better to sleep without socks. Also, of you had to pee, make sure you do.

[–]ObnoxiousFly 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Upvoted for truth. A sleeping bag liner and naked is the way to go in modern high tech sleeping bags. The real trick I'd to sleep with your clothes inside your bag to keep them warm for next morning.

[–]mainsworth 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Word. And you can use some of them as a serviceable pillow if the ground is awful.

[–]Wiki_pedo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought layering was the key to staying warm? As long as the sleeping bag's good, a T-shirt and long underwear should be enough to stay warm during the night. But, you've gotta get into cold clothes the next morning, so bring 'em into your sleeping bag beforehand!

[–]FMentallo 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sleeping in your clothes is dangerous if you dont have dry spare clothes. It is best to sleep in less clothing, more sleeping bags.

The reason being that when you sleep in your clothes, you tend to sweat a little bit which will wet your clothing, putting you at pretty good risk of hypothermia. It is better to be slightly chilled when out in the cold than warm enough that you will sweat at some point.

[–]mainsworth -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah definitely sleep with your clothes. Long johns and a tee shirt or long sleeved shirt. Hands shoved up in your junk. Socks off.

[–]evil_steve 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do I really want to know why you're advising people to pee if they must?

[–]mainsworth 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your body uses energy to keep pee in your body warm. So when you are really cold it's like using extra fuel to keep the basement warm when you are in the master bedroom.

[–]evil_steve 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bit of an anticlimax tbh. I was expecting a slush-piss horror story.

[–]canaznguitar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's best to sleep in as many layers as you can fit without compressing the sleeping bag. It's the loft of the sleeping bag that keeps your heat in.

[–]epic_awesome 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did the same thing in Nepal and had to stick my foot out of my sleeping bag because I was too hot.

It's a badass NASA engineered nano goose-down bag though.

[–]Anomuumi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, a very common mistake with sleeping bags. Also, you should always keep your head outside of the bag so that the humidity in the bag does not rise.

[–]duckandcover 5 points6 points ago

That is still cold as shit.. I have a difficult enough time sleeping in 8-10C

[–]Airazz 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's in snow igloos. I think keeping the temperature 26 degrees higher than on the outside is pretty damn good. In -30C you would die in a few hours. In -3C you could easily spend a night, as long as you have a decent sleeping bag. I tried.

[–]9ren 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In -30C you would die in a few hours. In -3C it will take the whole night.

Just my interpretation.

[–]Airazz 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, trust me. With a decent sleeping bag you can sleep in -3C just as you would in your normal, warm bed in a heated house. Modern sleeping bags are very light and quite thin, but they really can hold the warmth inside.

[–]Paragraph2 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While in the military here in Finland(compulsory for all the finnish men), on a war rehearsal, it was -32C and we had to be outside lying on the ground, in our sleeping bags on our watch post for 2hours 2 times a night. And i feel quite alive, you don't die in 2h.. Maybe if you have "regular clothes" and lie directly on the ground. The important thing is to keep your body from touching the ground directly, by having a sleeping bag or some kind of mattress to lie on, because the ground absorbs 70% of your body heat if you lie directly on the ground.

By the beds they have lowish curtains so you can't be seen while sleeping. The appeal of these are that in the winter, there's 24 hour night-time, with no/little light pollution so you can see the entire sky along with the aurora borealis. It's likely I'm going Finland soon and I'm definitely gonna try to spend a few nights in one of these.

[–]anniebananie 6 points7 points ago

[–]kidl33t -1 points0 points ago

With all due respect, igloo's are largely constructed from bricks of compacted snow.

There are subarctic nomads who live in whale bone lean-tos, but those are more permanent dwellings.

No, the sun's heat enters the enclosure and stays there. It doesn't bounce back up into space like it would with a regular roof.

[–]vistarmonei -1 points0 points ago

As a Finnish person living in the US... yes. The average person I know could care less about Finland.

[–]hyannohauhus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a big difference between not caring about something and not knowing about it.
