And then you spit in his face right?

[–]BS_Explanations 392 points393 points ago

The ability the llama has to spit is an interesting one for sure. Scientists claim that the earliest llamas contained corrosive spit similiar to that of a 40% based sulphiric acid. The ability to spit itself comes from its natural ability to blind its natural predator. The plains red buffalo.

I don't understand why this keeps happening. I start reading a comment that is obviously nonsense and I just keep nodding along as I read, going "Oh, this sounds completely reasonabl-NO, THIS IS NOT REASONABLE! WHAT ARE YOU DOING, BRAIN? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"

Me and my friend were arguing about who was better in terms of talent: Mozart or Lil Wayne. We've never shouted that loud to each other in our entire lives. He was for Lil Wayne, btw.

His run of mixtapes between Carter II and III are pretty unfuckwithable. He's not better than Mozart of course, but anyone I've taked to that's outrightly dismissive of Lil Wayne generally doesn't listen to rap in the first place.

[–]Marcob10 22 points23 points ago

I wouldn't even root for Lil Wayne in a debate on who's more talented between Lil Wayne and pretty much any hip hop artist.

[–]typecrime 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm still trying to tell if the persistent comparisons to Nas were originated by a troll or not. Certainly not an objective speculation on the part of Nas fans. Or fans of decent hip-hop. Or anyone who has heard Lil Wayne.

[–]PretendImGoku 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lil wayne is amazingly clever, so in that respect he is very talented but musically I'd say Mozart. But wayne puts up a fight, unlike Skrillex

[–]EnnuiDeBlase 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a pandora rap station and Lil Wayne is the only artist that is routinely shut down, so much so that he doesn't even show up anymore. That shit is obnoxious. He single handedly ruined 'Niggas in Paris' at precisely "maaaaaaaaall"

[–]EarJerker 259 points260 points ago

You know what I was thinking about today that kinda blows my mind?

The fact that like 150 years ago it was a special occurrence to be able to sit and listen to music. If you weren't well off or didn't know anyone with an instrument then you probably only heard an actual honest to god song a few times a year, or even less often than that.

I'm sure there were still street musicians and such in the cities, but if there was no one in your sleepy little village who knew how to play a piano or pluck a guitar then you probably only heard instrumental music at the annual harvest festival or whatever.

[–]tufro 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that's where folk music comes in and picks up the slack. Before TV radio etc, the some of best entertainment would be to sit around and make music with other people

It makes me sad that people think one of the most brilliant musical minds of the entirety of Western Music was limited by technology.

[–]daguito81 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think of it as "limited". But I do sometimes wonder what kind of music would they compose with current instruments. What they did are timeless art masterpieces that will be remembered and appretiated for the rest of our time.

BUT Mozart was a musical genius in every sense of the word. I would LOVE to see him grab a MIDI keyboard, computers, electric instruments and just see... what would come out?

Again, Not limited... just curious.

[–]NoahFect 7 points8 points ago

He'd probably sound like Trent Reznor... or at least they'd get along well together.

I think this is objectively false. Thus, anyone who makes this claim should be objectively stabbed in the face.

Does Skrillex write his music without any instruments around? Just sits down and writes out the individual parts for dozens of different musicians? Did he start writing said music when he was basically still a toddler? Is it likely that people will still listen to his work hundreds of years from now?

[–]Yreval 101 points102 points ago

[–]bigwax 82 points83 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mozart comment aside, I'm reposting this because it's relevant to the comments in this thread:

I honestly don't fucking understand why everyone has to go out of their way to shit on Skrillex. It's not that I have a problem with people stating their opinion. It's the fact that these people come off as music connoisseurs and are dogmatic about it. If you just don't like it and want to say that, that is completely fine. But rather than saying "Skrillex is terrible and you should be ashamed if you like his music. It takes absolutely no skill", just say something along the lines of "I don't like Skrillex" and move the fuck on.

I genuinely enjoy his music, and have invested a ton of time listening to all different types of electronic music (so exposure to other artists isn't an issue). If you don't like it, fine. Some people do. These people aren't retarded or a bunch of kids with "bad taste in music". These are people who love the thrill and excitement a good, dirty, dramatic drop gives no matter how annoying you think it might sound. It's just not for the casual listener.

Regarding those who are annoyed by him "just pressing play". If that's the case, then Skrillex knows it himself. He wants to showcase his music, but if he just stands there then he gets criticized either way. He is just trying to entertain the crowd (the whole reason they go to shows). If you want to see talent, there are very few mainstream electronic producers that actually showcase talent on stage (and even then, a talented DJ showcasing his mad skills doesn't always sound the best regardless of how much skill it takes).

If people are upset over the fact that some consider it "dubstep", then don't hate the player, hate the game. He just produces what he thinks sounds cool and it's up to the audience to label it. Not to mention his music does fall under some of the elements of dubstep. It's just not your traditional dubstep like Joker or Benga. Completely semantics. Here is a quote from a Guardian article:

There doesn't seem to be a material goal, just a desire – naive, maybe, or even old-fashioned – to be part of music scenes and to connect with crowds. "I don't even try to make 'dubstep'," he says, lifting his hands to make air-quotes. "It's just another tempo and rhythm that I work in, because it makes people go wild."

When I hear someone go out of their way to talk shit about a genre, all I see is some cynic with the mentality of an 11 year old who doesn't understand subjectivity. I love every genre of music, so I understand how easy it is to degrade some genres by saying things like "Hip Hop is just talking about money and bitches over a beat", or "Techno is what happens when you give an 8 year old a computer". You're not being original at all, just ignorant.

I have never heard more than about 2 artists ever get that signature "brostep" sound right, and for good reason. It's fucking hard to synthesize a sound like that. You have to know what you're doing - the ins and outs of whatever form of synthesis you use (FM, subtractive, etc). It does take a degree of talent, no matter how annoying or stupid you think it sounds.

TL;DR: If you don't like Skrillex, that's fine. But don't be dogmatic about him being a bad artist. Some people like it.

I like to make fun of dubstep as much anyone else, but I don't know where people get the idea that with electronic music, you just press a button and a song is instantly written. A lot of dubstep producers spend weeks of nonstop work just on a single song. It requires a fuckton of talent. Also, it's a god damn subjective opinion.

I listen to EVERYTHING, including mozart. Open your mind. I've heard a few of these tracks by this fellow Skrillex, not bad. Think of music as you would food. It's all good. Mostly. Surely you'll have your individual tastes, but to tell someone they are retarded because you don't particularly enjoy their favorite food. That's simply pretentious.

Same instance here. You have someone who likes recipes from a gentleman who cooked food back in the 1700's and those recipes survive to today. People love the food. But then someone comes along and says they enjoy food by this guy who cooks burgers out back and says they taste better than the guy who's cooking originates from the 1700's.

The assessment can be made of anything because art is subjective. You may really enjoy Mozart (as do I) but that doesn't mean you have to close your mind to other experiences. To eat the same dish for the rest of your life is fucking BORING and a true waste of the variety we've been given.

It's all a gift. Do try a little of everything. And don't be so judgmental. There is a buffet out there, and you who are so judgmental seem to get by on simple meat and potatoes. Try some fries. Try a burger. Try some falafel. Have a Burrito or some Fajitas. Look what you're missing!

Art is subjective up to a point. There's some wiggle room, but in many cases you make a pretty definitive case about what is "superior." I mostly mean within a genre rather than between genres.

What if we resurrect Mozart one day and he just happens to be checking out some new music and comes along Skrillex and likes it.

Then, BAM, zombie Mozart dropping bass like no other.

What would you think then?

Judging by the comments in this thread, there are 0 music producers on Reddit. Skrillex cannot be compared to Mozart. One wrote classical scores while the other is an extremely creative sound designer and writer of dance floor oriented music. He twists knobs during live shows because he is triggering audio loops within Ableton live. That is in no way representative of his talents as a producer. I don't expect any of you to understand that. Now downvote this into oblivion so you can continue complaining about someone who's been successful at what he does. I do see how that could be bothersome.

Mozart was a bit of a 'pop artist' of his time. Undeniably a genius but, with a few exceptions, turned out hundreds of safe and competent tunes rather than the really challenging masterpieces of the likes of Beethoven and Vivaldi.

Better than Skrillex though, yes.

I'd recommend anyone who doesn't have an opinion to watch Amadeus and go from there.

*Edit: Opinion on Mozart vs Skrillex or classical music in general, not opinion on Mozart's character!

[–]HonestGeorge 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mozart's style was actually a lot more progressive than you make it look like. He's considered the key figure of the classical style by making radical reactions to the baroque. Also funny that you mention Beethoven, as he actually looked up to Mozarts style and was influenced in many ways by Mozart.

Amadeus gives a nice portrayal of Mozarts louche character, but you can't formulate an opinion on his music based on that movie.

[–]headless_bourgeoisie 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but almost all of them were back then. It wasn't until Beethoven that the idea of the "artist" existed for composers. Before him composers were hired craftsman, so it makes sense that they would produce a lot of banal, bubblegum music.

That said, I think many would agree that Mozart was one of the most naturally gifted composers of all time.

While Mozart's musical ability surpasses Sonny Moore by an obscene amount, I don't appreciate those who are giving him shit for having zero talent at all. As someone who went to college for music production (which includes a minor in electronic music study) I can vouch that the creation of [good] electro/brostep (and other electronic genres) is not as easy as it appears to be. While it is much more simplistic and less musically inclined, a lot of work goes into making the professional sound Sonny has made for himself. Anyone can put some drums in a track and throw an LFO on an instrument to make it wobble, but the best of the best know the secrets of mastering that give tracks an incredible audio spectrum. While his musical talent is not far more than any average musician, and not much can be said about his variety (an individual brostep song does not require more than 1 or 2 simple minor scales), his abilities in his field have to be given credit. He is the kind of person you would want mastering your band's album. So, to each their own, but give credit where it's due. And once more so the possibility of blind hatred prevents me from getting downvoted: In my opinion Skrillex will never be as talented musically as Mozart.

EDIT: Changed dubstep to brostep because I do agree, Skrillex does nothing but move what we know as the "dubstep" genre away from its roots.

I remember seeing something about Skrillex's actual DJ setup. Literally, the mixer isn't plugged in, he doesn't even use CDJs, and he just plays pre-made mixes and dramatically turns knobs while doing some stupid dance moves.

Now don't get me wrong, I absolutely love his music. I also love Mozart, Weber, Brahms, etc., so I'm not saying either is better than the other (they're different). But to be quite honest, he doesn't do jack as a DJ, compared to people like Avicii or Tiesto.

The thing that baffles me is how something that was embraced by a very small and off subculture has went full retard into the mainstream. I have nothing against pop music but I've been around the Detroit electronic scene, have thrown shows since the mid-90's, and see no resemblance of a fan base that will carry the torch when it is no longer cool. Deep House, Techno, Tech-House, and Electro(not to be confused with electro-dub-house) communities have matured and are still going strong with an everlasting community that bring in new members in at a steady pace.

It's almost as if i'm watching a bubble in a music genre. People are going to dig what they dig, but to compare an artist in a genre of music that as of now appears to be extremely disposable seems to be a tad premature when going against someone like Mozart with a 240ish year track record of being god like. While i'll be bold and say the Beatles will succeed into make it just as long, I can't see Elvis doing the same.

The big thing to realize with electronic music is the way it makes a connection to people. Usually it's not the music that got these people into it.. it was the experience that exposed it to them. In Detroit, it's usually the party and the little one's first experience at a large gathering with plenty of people and any other debaucheries you can fathom. You go to your first rock concert, kiss a boy/girl, have some beer, and it lasts in your mind for a long time. Only time will tell what the future generations deem as quality music, and only time will show which ones are worthy of being studied and remembered.

Counter point to "Skrillex just turns knobs".

Mozart pre-prepared his work (obviously) and the orchestra just played from his composition.

Skrillex pre-prepares his work in an advanced form of composition and does even more when mixing it all together live.

Not saying Mozart>Skrillex or vice versa, but I hate to see my reddit become irrational and jumping on the "I hate dubstep no matter what" bandwagon.

[–]harky 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To my knowledge Skrillex does not mix live. His mixing table is a set piece. All the music at live concerts is pre-recorded.

Mozart on the other hand was an accomplished pianist and violinist. While better known as a composer he certainly did perform and in fact made his living for a time as a court musician.

In terms of talent I find it very doubtful that anyone will remember Skrillex in ten, or even five years. Even if I found his work musically interesting the idea that it will be meaningful in two hundred and fifty years seems extremely unlikely. Certainly people shouldn't be so dismissive of different types of music, but in this case I don't see any realistic argument against the claim that Mozart was the more musically talented of these two individuals.

[–]PapaCorn 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Skrillex just turns knobs".

I fucking hate this argument. Mozart is pretty clearly more talented than Skrillex, but Skrillex and other dubstep producers are not talentless hacks. People who know nothing about making electronic dance music seem to think you just open up a program that says "would you like to add wub? y/n".

[–]croutonicus 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mozart was also an exceedingly talented pianist, and conductor. The conductors job is often overlooked, but getting a room of musicians to play your music how you want it is very difficult. It is similar (don't laugh) to the job of a DJ, who mixes his own music to sound how he wants it.

Skrillex does not do even more mixing when it is live, he is not a DJ and has admitted this. The equivilent would be a man who writes music for an orchestra, and sits at the front letting the musicians to play it themselves.

Actually, no that would still not work, because that sentence does not imply that Mozart currently has a certain amount of talent at all. It would need to say something like "Skrillex is more talented than Mozart right now" for your pedantry to be accurate.
