Believe it or not, some people do take off-label Desoxyn (methamphetamine) for obesity.
Works like a damn charm.

[–]theamazingsiddiqui 14 points15 points16 points 7 months ago
I've been lifting weights roughly 3-4 times a week for no less than one hour. I did the whole eating small meals every few hours, eating low-fat, etc. etc. Needless to say, I didn't get ripped from doing any of this. As a matter of fact, I gained crazy strength from where I was (squating 90lbs to 265lbs in a few months), but looking at me you couldn't I was hitting the gym.
The majority of it comes down to your combination of diet/cardio. It wasn't until I cut back MASSIVELY on carbs to the point where I'd have a few slices of whole wheat bread and then just mainly fruits and vegetables aside from good fats and protein. Even then, I'm not a "ripped" looking guy unless I run my ass off or jump rope for 20-30 minutes a couple times a week (at least).
[–]Outofmany 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
You might try tabata sprinting, you can keep your cardio sessions down to 25mins a week (including warm up). It's tough but it is the most efficient way of getting cardio.
[–]cathmore 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
So what would be some good routines using a treadmill? I would love to cut down my run times.
[–]Outofmany 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I have not done it on a treadmill but I have on a stationary bike and I currently do them on a quiet stretch of road near my house. There are some strength advantages to breaking into a full sprint. The key to the sprinting is to reach maximum output.
Basically it goes like this: Work out A. 20 second sprint followed by a 10 second rest/jogging/walking/keeling over doesn't matter. That's one interval you will need to do 8. Start off with a 3 min warm up jog and a 5 min cool down.
Work out B. This one is for bonus fat burning. 30 second sprint followed by 90 second rest. You can go as little as 60 seconds for the rest or up to 120 seconds but I've always done 90. Same warm up and cool down.
Sounds simple but it's pure hell. The most important thing is to go all out. It can be very hard to get your body to do this and it can feel quite uncomfortable. I come away with burning lungs and blurry vision due to all the mad blood flow.
Do these on non-lifting days alternating between work out A and B - that's one of each per week. Be careful on the treadmill because the level of fatigue can affect your balance. There are tabata timers for smart phones if you want to get out into the fresh air. I've done tabata burpees and tabata mountain climbers too - but only as a last resort. Some people talk about doing it with a jump rope or corss fit style strength exercises - there aren't really tabatas because the all out intensity isn't there.
[–]maybeatroll 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Hop on a bike or rowing machine (erg) for em, can't imagine doing 20 second all out sprints on a treadmill.
[–]SortaBeta 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
So you bulked then cut?
[–]Level_75_Zapdos 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
"Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym." You don't need to do cardio to get ripped (although HIIT burns way more calories than low intensity, long duration cardio). Lift heavy and take a multi.
[–]Level_75_Zapdos -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago
If you want maximum gains and efficiency, a multivitamin is necessary.
[–]Level_75_Zapdos 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Agreed. I just did a quick Google search, but if it were actually something important I would be sure to use 100% credible sources. At the same time, nutritional science has so many conflicting messages (some of it probably due to companies wanting to make a profit).
[–]cive666 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
You forgot the part where you do it for years. After that you'll get ripped. I read that if you do everything right you can gain 2lbs of muscle a month. Professional body builders can hit 3lbs sometimes. So keep up the good work.
[–]Sullan08 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Bodybuilders who use steroids, yeah. And when you're just beginning, you can gain around 3-4 lbs of muscle a month (only last around two-three months). I gained around 15 lbs in 4 months when I first started, and some of it may have been fat, but mostly muscle.
Also, more of it is diet than most people think.
[–]Garofoli 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
And when you're just beginning, you can gain around 3-4 lbs of muscle a month (only last around two-three months).
Can I get a citation?
[–]morphtec 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
you can't because it's bs.
[–]imahugeprick123 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
No way I can prove it, but I did. 15 pounds over the summer.
Edit: I'm 16 though so thats probably a major factor.
[–]Sullan08 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago*
Personal and asking around experience (honestly just google it. Maybe my timeline is wrong, but beginners will get those gains if they do it right). Had insane gains for that amount of time, then it just slows down. People who think you can gain more than 3 lbs of muscle consistently (even 3 is a bit much) are really just gaining some fat with it, it's just not too noticeable.
Edit-I know how uncredible I sound lol.
[–]vicious-delicious 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I weighed 58kgs (127lbs), unhealthy weight for my height 5,11, due to eating poorly. I started gyming around 3-4 times a week and eating a heap healthier+often. Now I weigh 70kgs (154lbs) this took me around 4 months with two setbacks, I had my wisdom teeth taken out - lost 4 Kilos. I had a Flu bug thing n didnt eat properly for a week - lost 3 Kilos. I have a low BMI of 14% because I'm not dirty bulking I eat healthy.
[–]biosaint 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
i put on about 8-10 pounds of muscle this last october (15 overall, i cut the fat later). no steroids involved, i hate those things. Just diet and an appropriate workout plan. and no cardio just for that month, really helped the gains out.
[–]Spacecase29 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
It's been my experience that the fastest gains a person makes both strength and looks wise are in the first month they start lifting. After that things keep progressing (alot) but at a much slower rate. I can see if a person is very under/overweight not seeing the physical changes that fast.
[–]douguncensored 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Genetics is a large factor. Certain body types are pre-disposed to a lean musculature.
[–]DoctaJay 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
Just use this one weird old tip.
[–]zidanetribal 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
Surely no one would lie to me when selling me workout machines.
[–]snaaark 29 points30 points31 points 7 months ago
You'd be surprised what you can do in a month if you're willing to kill it at the gym for an hour a day.
[–]likwidfuzion 34 points35 points36 points 7 months ago*
Just to add on, an hour at the gym won't help much if your diet isn't in check first. You can't continue eating/drinking junk and expect progressive positive results (though not impossible with intense training). Diet is where beginners and "New Year's resolution" makers fall short on (or neglect) and then give up. As cliché as it is, you are what you eat.
Edit: accidentally submitted too early before completing my sentence.
[–]snaaark -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago
I figured it was assumed that when people start to care enough about how they look/feel that they'll actually put in the time at the gym, they'll start to eat well. That is the easy part after all.
[–]likwidfuzion 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
In general, most beginners find it hard to give up food and drinks that they've enjoyed for so long. It's no longer adding a routine to your daily life (i.e. going to the gym), but a lifestyle changing experience (i.e. changing how and what you eat on a daily basis). Those that lack discipline will go back to their bad eating habits after a while and it just snowballs from there.
[–]FuckYouImFunny 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Well, that's only if you want to lose fat, right? Can't you continue eating, just lift a shitload and gain muscle, then later cut the fat as you still lift? Wouldn't the results be better/quicker that way?
[–]TyroneofAfrica 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
If you're young you can still eat whatever you want because your metabolism is so high still. A lot of people lift and don't eat as much protein as they are supposed to. 1g/1lb you weigh/per day.
[–]YNinja58 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
No. You cant. Young people don't automatically have high metabolisms.
[–]TyroneofAfrica 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
The metabolism of the average teenager is way higher than someone who is 30 or 40. Everyone I know who is active can eat whatever they want and be completely fine.
[–]YNinja58 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
Doesn't make your blanket statement true.
[–]fergetcom 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
How old is too old?
It's different for everybody. Most people's metabolism slows down a lot between 25-30. It's drastic if you aren't active.
[–]Cutsprocket 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
holy shit, if i wanted to do that I'd have to be eating 270g a day. Thats a lotta meat
[–]AlephBaTa 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Hilarious how people downvote good advice. Fuck the haters. I lost ten lbs of fat in a month from good diet and lifting weights three times a week.
[–]Klovick 19 points20 points21 points 7 months ago
Of course you can lose 10 pounds in a month if you set your mind to it, it's not that hard.
Packing on 10 pounds of muscle in a month is very different.
[–]Sullan08 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
Yeah, because it isn't possible to gain that much in a month. Even on roids you couldn't get anywhere close to that.
[–]raudo 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
:D you haven't tested Tri-Trenabol....
[–]AsianPerson 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
With roids it's very possible. I know some guys on juice. They were stacking D-bol, Winstrol, and Anavar and put on 10lbs+ lean/month. Even with a great diet I was putting on less than 5lbs a month and some if it was fat.
[–]MyNameCouldntBeAsLon 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Bob. Bob had bitch-tits.
Their diet consisted of eating LOTS of food, didn't matter what it was. With the amount of lifting they did and how fast their body was synthesizing protein, gaining lean mass was extremely easy. One of the juicers was my friend and he still tried to get as much protein as possible, but in the end, for him, getting as much calories as possible was the most important part.
[–]Sullan08 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Ehh, maybe I am wrong about steroids, but still, if you're cheating to get where you're at, it's pathetic. I know someone who hasn't even worked out for a year and he's already on roids, like really...?
[–]syntheticcodon -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago
Physiologically, this is likely true. It also depends what weight you're at. If I lost 10 lb, my BMI would be 16. My body would kick in to starvation mode and lyse my muscles. If someone with a BMI of 28 wanted to lose 10 lbs in a month, that would be quite facile since it would be primarily lipids they would be degrading.
(Yeah, I know BMI is a bit of a bogus measure of fitness)
[–]barfobulator 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
TIL "facile" is an actual word in English, which I should have already guessed by my extended study in Spanish.
[–]syntheticcodon 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
What does the Spanish equivalent mean?... As a scientist, I usually use it to described an experiment to construction of a tool as "doable" or "with few expected problems." It them slips in to my every-day vocabulary. Most benchwork scientists know that "easy" is a bad term to use because most of what we do is pretty tricky and technically demanding, it's just that we're trained to do it and have a lot of experience.
The Spanish word "fácil" is just a general purpose word for "easy". As far as "easy" being an appropriate word goes, I think it can be a relative term depending on the person you're talking to. Like, some technical skill that you're well-trained in is easy when talking to your colleagues, but not easy when talking to Average Joe.
[–]Persius -11 points-10 points-9 points 7 months ago
I've gotten around 8 or so in two weeks. So not impossible.
[–]TreBeezy 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I'm sorry, but it's HIGHLY unlikely that you gained 8 lbs of muscle in 2 weeks. Don't confuse bodyweight gains with muscle gains. I dunno if that is even possible on roids. 8 lbs of solid muscle over a year is considered a good gain.
[–]Persius -7 points-6 points-5 points 7 months ago
Well I looked very physically different from when I started. I could certainly feel an extreme difference in my legs and arms from when I had starting working out. And I was actually at my lowest weight that I had been after I started my original diet. So, to each his own I guess.
In your first year of working out, you gain around 20 pounds of muscle. You didn't gain 8 in 2 weeks.
[–]Persius -8 points-7 points-6 points 7 months ago
Look, the specific workouts I was doing was for that amount of muscle in that amount of time. It's not impossible just because you haven't done it.
[–]TreBeezy 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Just a few links on this... bodybuilding.com stronglifts Muscleevo
[–]amazingintelligence 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
it's pretty shitty advice as it neglects diet and suggests that gyming an hour a day is ideal or necessary or something (i mean look at you, you got results from watching diet and probably did around half the gym time). also losing 10 pounds of fat in a month would be pretty incredible unless you were super obese, you know you probably lost a lot of water weight in that time too?
"get ripped fast" sort of shit is almost always complete bullshit. do a bit of research if you want to change your body.
[–]AlephBaTa 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
I agree completely that these ads of "getting ripped fast" are complete and utter bullshit. It almost always entails that you buy some useless product and neglects the necessary hard work that is required to get "ripped."
My success came from eating at a caloric deficit of about 7-800 calories a day, and doing heavy squatting, deadlifts, bench press, and overhead press 3x a week. Yes, I am aware that consuming so few calories makes it harder for me to build muscle, but I was focused on losing fat, primarily.
Also, I was consuming a lot of protein in the form of shakes and meats.
But the moral of the story: transforming your body is a journey. It's gonna be tough at times, and you're going to have to force yourself to get into the gym somedays.
[–]amazingintelligence 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
seems like you were pretty dedicated man. nice job!
i agree it's good to motivate people to exercise and get through some tough gym times, but that doesn't do any good if people just blindly get into some bullshiteverydayliftwhatevertheyplease routine because they think if they just work hard and sweat and get sore they're going to lose weight or gain a lot of muscle. and that's what a beginner's probably going to do if they take "advice" like "just kill it in the gym everyday!!" to heart. they won't understand that resting your muscles is just as important as resistance training, or that if they eat an extra 500 calories on a day they burned around that much they won't be at a deficit.
you definitely know what i mean considering your period of weight loss was well structured like that.
[–]derstaB 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I don't know if it's the same for me but when I'm at the gym, 3-4 hours pass by without me even knowing it.
[–]Royal_Tart_Toter 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
No one should spend that long at the gym unless they work there... need to lower time between sets and/or do quicker cardio like HIIT. you can get everything you need to get done in ~1 hour including cardio if you do it efficiently.
[–]slipperyfist 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago*
Obviously you can get into better shape in a month, it's shit like this that the OP is talking about.
Edit: Though I would like to point out that a beginner doesn't have any real use going to the gym every day.
[–]TurboNerd 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago*
This is assuming there isn't massive fat sacks on your body to begin with. If you're in relatively good shape to begin with or very skinny with little muscle mass all it takes is a good intake of protein, proper lift cycles, gym 6 days a week for about an hour, and perserverance to get ripped in a month. Sure you won't be as big as a body builder but you'll be pretty ripped. Edit: Getting downvoted by someone who has been to the gym for a month but once a week and has seen no results.
