This short story is a perfect depiction of the struggle to breach manhood from the perspective of an adolescent boy who does not want to grow up. He is the Holden Caulfield of the new generation. He is the Huckleberry Finn brought to grand finale that the ages have been begging for.

Note how the author elegantly alters the females name with every utterance from the staunchly determined Gary. This represents his many loves from the spring time of his life, attempting to reconcile the fact that they are not who he wants. Every time the name changes, it is actually a separate instance of sexual encounter for Gary, but he is, in fact, slightly mentally disabled and his mind is thinking back on all these different occurrences as if they were one.

The fact that he orgasmed the moment he placed his peeny inside her hoohah demonstrates his inability to handle adult behaviors. Her pregnancy represents his experiential attempt to force him to be a man when fatherhood is on the cusp of a reality. Then again, the fact that he doubts that Melissa will be alive in the morning may represent his immature experience of her leaving in the middle of the night. She likely is not actually pregnant, and doesn't actually die, but that is how it plays out in the mind of this special, immaculate boy.
