Isn't that a TORTOISE?

It's Kevin the Tortoise who is also the guy who has the depth perception problems that I find absolutely irresistable.

i googled turtle and this is what came up. i had my doubts too right after posting it but meh. still cute as fuck

[–]RupertDurden 12 points13 points ago

Exactly. Cute is what matters. This subreddit is called r/aww, not r/awwyeahimrightabouttheclassificationofthisfaunæ.

I'm just saying that I'd totally subscribe to that subreddit.

Oh the things that I could learn...

[–]missv8nightmare 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So people should be able to post whatever they want even if its wrong and have no one correct them just because its cute? This way of thinking makes no sense to me. How are people to learn from their mistakes?

[–]RupertDurden 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand you point of view, and I think that in many situations you are right. I want to be corrected by my friends if I say something wrong, so that the next time I say it, I can be correct. If they can pull me to the side to say it so that I am not embarrassed, all the better.

That being said, there is a time and place for everything. People come to /r/aww to see things that make them smile. Things that make them say aww. Correcting the op's description does neither of those things.

[–]TheJack38 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think there is much more that's more adorable than a tiny tur- err, tortoise, that's trying to eat a berry larger than himself. =D

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, it's a geochelone sulcata, the African Spurred Tortoise. Third-largest on earth.

[–]MayorBee 4 points5 points ago

Then that strawberry must be gargantuan! I've always liked that word..."gargantuan."

[–]gconsier 0 points1 point ago

Little buggers start out tiny but never seem to stop growing.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe that's the case for most reptiles; it's just that tortoises are long lived.

[–]exxocet 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

its both. its a tortoise which is included in the order of turtles (testudines)

[–]Dorigard -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel that calling the whole order of Testudines "turtles" is incorrect (it's actual correctness notwithstanding), we don't do that to other orders. Example we don't call the order of Primates specifically "monkey" or "human" and we don't call anything in the order of Carnivora something as simple as "dog" or "bear."

As such, this is not a "turtle" it is a tortoise, not to be mistaken with a turtle or terrapin.

[–]urbanturtlefarm 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We may be an ape, but on here we're just a bunch of typing monkeys... and whatever this shelled miscreant is, it's going to make that berry its bitch.

[–]Dorigard 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of this, I approve.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Strawberries aren't true berries, though.

[–]exxocet 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You may feel that it is incorrect, but that does not change the fact that various higher level classifications have common names that phylogenetically encompass more basic level members but seemingly exclude them in name.

New World Monkeys include marmosets, Old World Monkeys include baboons. So similarly you could argue that all baboons are monkeys, but not all monkeys are baboons. As all tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises.

[–]Dorigard 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok, I concede. This was more me defending the species of the animal more then exorcising my knowledge of animal classification, to which you are obviously more educated than I.

[–]exxocet 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, you make an excellent point - one that highlights precisely why classification in scientific literature tries to steer clear of common names. There is less room for ambiguity or confusion to creep in when the 'latin' names are used.

If I talk about how much i would love to ride an elk, you can't be sure if I am talking about a wapiti or a moose. So if you are wondering, I would love to ride Alces alces.

Yeah, I think that'd be cool.

My ex gf and I had a Sulcata as a pet before (about 90% sure that's what this guy is as well) he was free range in the apartment quite a bit of the time. The funny thing was every time she painted her toenails red he would chase her around the apartment trying to bite them. It was adorable.

I want to own a pet Tortoise for many reasons: They're rare, they're easy to care for, they're lazy, they live longer than us, they eat healthy shit, they don't give a fuck.

[–]missv8nightmare 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I owned a greek tortoise. I loved they little fucker to death. He had so much personality! He was pretty easy to take care of. We had his time for the sun lamp and the heart lamp. Also for his water soaks. We let him have freedom of the house because he loved exploring. He would let us know when he was hungry by ealing over our toes our going into the kitchen and staring at the fridge.

He was smart and oh so adorable. He lived to snuggle up to me or my boyfriend. I let him fall asleep on my tummy all the time. And if he didn't like you.. He would pee on you!

Someone broke into the house and stole shit.. Including Zeus (yup we named him Zeus). The little shit (who lives in the house right behind us claims he didn't take him.. But there want anyway Zeus could have gotten out. I miss him.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Whoa. Someone stole your fucking pet? Damn. I'm really sorry. If it wasn't too long ago, you should put up lost flyers because a neighbor or even sibling/parent will identify it especially if you say it was stolen. Otherwise... Damn.

[–]urbanturtlefarm 0 points1 point ago

They're not "easy" if you're doing it right.

[–]thechrispotts 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you by chance have experience raising Sulcata's?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've had Sulcatas and "easy" is not at all a word I would use to describe their stewardship requirements. From heating and lighting to humidity control and diet, there's nothing particularly easy about them unless you have the proper space, climate, and money.
