That's a good one! My favorite is when he sets Liz up with his lesbian friend and she storms into is office saying she's not gay and he says (not verbatim) "Oh sorry, I just assumed because of your shoes."

edit: into his* office

I love how 30 Rock is bringing gay culture and humour into the mainstream. Even though Tina Fey claims to be theistic herself (she talks about sincerely praying to Yahweh for advice on how to be a better woman and mother in her book "Bossy Pants", which is odd because I think she should be thanking herself for being an excellent provider for her children by being an exceptionally funny woman person).

If she is an atheist, then she isn't open about it. Maybe to preserve her career or her productions.

[–]Smallpaul 24 points25 points ago

30 rock is making gay culture mainstream?

Will and Grace?

3's company?

[–]icanseestars 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously?

Serious the fuck ly?

Three's Company?

You think a straight man pretending to be gay so he can live with two (not so) hot women is a show that helped gay men in society?

Soap was one of the first US shows with an openly gay character - Jodie - played by Billy Crystal. Tens of thousands of wacko religious people sent letters of protest before the show even aired.

[–]Corrik 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh is that what that show is about? I really only remember that one episode where there was a big misunderstanding that caused some problems but they sorted it all out by the end.

[–]Smallpaul 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

3's company was significant because the landlords treated the gayness as a legitimate trait and treated him better as a gay man than they would have as a co-habitating straight man. In 1977.

I'm pretty sure in Bossy Pants that was meant to be ironic. I could be wrong, but come on.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She sounded pretty sincere when talking about Yahweh on the audiobook. So sincere that she didn't say "Yahweh", she actually said "god".

And Tina Fey is Greek Orthodox. I thought everyone knew this.

[–]yttrx 1 point2 points ago

Maybe because its none of anyone's business but hers. We don't all find relevance or identity by wearing what we believe on our shirts.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She is very open about her religion in her book. She is Greek Orthodox. So I'm very sorry to have to disagree with you, or I should say she is very sorry to have to disagree with you, but you are just plain wrong, wrong wrong.

[–]yttrx 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What exactly am I wrong about?

I know you read Bossypants and everything (and by read, I mean you listened to the audiobook), and I know you think that when someone says they're raised in a certain faith it means they have that faith for the rest of their lives, but if you can show me a picture of Tina Fey in G.O. garb and attending a G.O. service at any time after she landed SNL, I'll send you the contents of my refrigerator.

[–]GenerationXero 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

On the Howard Stern Show she said Religion is not part of her life at all, but she was raised Greek Orthodox.

look forward to another revision soon, the end was supposed to come within the generation of those born around WWI. depending on how you measure a 'generation', it was supposed to happen anywhere from 2 decades to when the last one born at that time dies. those folks are pushing 100.

A large portion of their doctrine hinges on their false belief that Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babaloynians in 607 B.C.E. They believe this despite every bit of evidence pointing to 587/6 B.C.E. And they calculate their incorrect date using dates that are anchored on the 587/6 date. Questioning the 607 date gets you excommunicated and labeled an "apostate".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eschatology_of_Jehovah's_Witnesses#Presence_of_Jesus_Christ

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that 1914 is the start of the end times and is when Satan was cast out of heaven. They look at the book of Daniel and did some basic math to come up with 2,520 years. They then walk back 2,520 years from 1914 and come up with 607 B.C.E. The parts of Daniel they pick out talk about the destruction of Jerusalem. So, they claim that 607 was when Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians. Except it wasn't, it was destroyed 587(or 586).

In an attempt to sure up their 607 date they take 70 years, which is the length of the exile, and count back from the year of the temples reconstruction and get 607. A major problem is that the date that historians believe the template was rebuilt is based on the 587(6) date. Jehovah's Witnesses then go on to claim that historians are wrong and the bible is right while continuing to cherry picking dates from the people they claim are wrong.

They also like to point at some minor issues with Canon of Ptolemy as proof that historians are wrong. They do this while ignoring that the Canon of Ptolemy is no longer the corner stone of the date they are attacking and that the date is now based on administrative tablets from that time.

Here is more specifics about the issue: http://carm.org/1914-ad-607-bc-586-bc-and-jehovahs-witnesses

Watch it. It's seriously worth it. I didn't watch it either when it was "the hip thing to watch" simply because I thought it couldn't really be that good. Along comes Netflix and I'm hooked. I don't think I'd ever been addicted to a comedy before but it's really hard to just watch one episode instead of 4 or 5 at a time. The humor is edgy, current, and very smart.

Just because this is r/atheism doesn't mean you should put the punchline in the title.

Thanks, I'm on a very slow connection and I couldn't read the punchline.

The irony is that Alec Baldwin is one of the strictest liberals I can think of.

[–]SenatorVreenak 2 points3 points ago

Not really. Jack is a pretty harsh parody of conservatives.

[–]theEnzyteGuy 15 points16 points ago

You do realize there is a difference between Alec Baldwin and the character he plays, right?

Underrated? It's in NBCs Thursday night lineup and just started it's sixth fucking season.

[–]ExistentialEnso 8 points9 points ago

Its ratings are lower than a lot of other primetime comedies, though.

Last night's episode (the season premiere!) featured Kenneth thinking the world was about to end, due to Harold Camping-like predictions. Definitely worth checking out, especially for atheists.

For those who don't know (I know that this is Reddit and most of you do know), Republicans also go by the name GOP sometimes, which looks awfully like GOD.

[–]Kunkletown 1 point2 points ago

I'm actually on the downturn. I want her less. Every episode she seems like the "crazy" you're not supposed to stick you dick in. I'd still do it, though, if only because I have never actually stuck my dick in crazy and don't know any better.

[–]JackTrickleson 1 point2 points ago

I've never minded sticking my dick in crazy, so I would do it in a second.

[–]Doilyn 2 points3 points ago

Wrap it, watch it, and leave a fake name. That's how to stick it in crazy.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

I've seen this show once, and the entire time he reminded me of so many closet homosexuals who live in fear of their own sexuality because of what they're told is right and wrong. I hope this was intentional.

[–]DiscordianStooge 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His character is the embodiment of a man so naive that he truly believes in his religious/country upbringing, and lives his life as close to his religious beliefs as to be absurd. Kenneth once answered the phone, and Jack told him he didn't want to talk to the person calling. Kenneth considered this minor deception to be "corporate intrigue." It is also widely implied that he is between 60 and 80 years old.

Implied homosexuality doesn't even come close to this character. This is only one reason why "30 Rock" is one of the best comedies of the last 20 years.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the explanation. I haven't really explored recent comedy shows (30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, etc) but I might eventually. They seem more substantial than early 2000's shows.

[–]DiscordianStooge 7 points8 points ago

Except for Arrested Development. They aren't better than that.

could someone be a dear and explain why the fuck "choosing" is a sin?!

[–]weird_sex_things 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a parody making fun of the fact that many things prohibited by religions are seen as trivial by other religions/cultures. Eating pork, for example. Or premarital sex.
