Ah, what a beautiful little piece of nature we've made here. What's that? Yeah, I think so. Let's just grab our two inch brushes and drop in a happy little zombie caribou right here.

Alright then, looks like we have a finished painting. Happy painting, and god-bless.

Price is negotiable, eh? I'll buy it for $12. Not a penny higher, not a penny less. That's right. You aren't allowed to sell it cheaper to me. Your money will be paid in increments of $0.01 every year for the next 1200 years. Have a nice day.

I can do a Heavy-Weight paper for $60 plus shipping, or I can do a cheaper semi-gloss thin paper for $50 plus shipping. :) (Shipping is $6 if you're in the US) Let me know if you're interested. The print will be 24"x18" just like the actual painting, but keep in mind a print won't look as good as the original. Thank you!

I bet I would react the same, but I would eventually slow down - at least for a while.

A reindeer is a common sight on the roads of Northern Finland. The locals know it, and no matter how many dead corpses or warning signs one puts there, it makes very little effect for them. For them it is a day as usual. Still, for outsiders who do not know the dangers, the corpse truly can be an effective warning sign since they aren't accustomed to the situation anyways.

OH! I KNOW THIS! A "reindeer" is not a particular breed or species of deer. It's a blanket term for a domesticated deer, usually caribou. Rein deer, like draught horse, get it? A deer that has been broken to harness and reins.

[–]Drawtaru 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I learned that bit of trivia ridiculously late in life. Seems obvious in retrospect.

[–]gormhornbori 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, there is several species of wild reindeer. Also the word is an old germanic one, probably imported to English as vikings brought specimens to England. In modern Norwegian it's reinsdyr. "Dyr" = animal, same word as German "Tier". Anyway the word reindeer is much older than widespread domestication for reindeer.

The English word "deer" was "deor" in Old English where is was a general word for any wild (as opposed to domesticated) animal (whereas "animal" is imported to Middle English from French (Latin)). The meaning of "deer" in modern English is of course much more specific.

[–]99trumpets 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In North America "reindeer" always refers to the domesticated animal only; the wild ones are a different subspecies and are always called "caribou", never "reindeer".

In Europe the terminology is different because the wild animals there are actually the same subspecies as the domesticated ones, so they just call them all "reindeer".

A lot of animal names are very different in American English vs. British English. ("Elk" is the worst. Birds are pretty difficult too/)

[–]Platypuskeeper 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also "rein" (as in a strap) isn't Germanic, it's from Latin; same origin as "retain". The word doesn't exist in Swedish or Norwegian.

Plus, Swedes and Norwegians didn't domesticate reindeer. That's a Sami (Laplander) thing. To this day reindeer-herding in Scandinavia is almost exclusively a Sami profession.

[–]Dsilkotch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmmm. According to Wikipedia, we're both wrong and "reindeer" is just another word for "caribou." Now I just don't know what to think.

[–]Excentinel 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was under the impression the term Reindeer implied a level of domestication while Caribou implied wild populations, however according to Wikipedia, the two terms are largely interchangeable and merely indicate regional nomenclature.

[–]Busty_Beaver 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's where I got it from.

[–]99trumpets 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Wikipedia entry was written by a European. The terms are not interchangable in North America. To North American biologists, "reindeer" always means the domesticated animal, "caribou" the wild animals (the subspecies Rangifer tarandus tarandus, and also the Peary caribou). I know biologists who study caribou full time and they wouldn't be caught dead calling their animals "reindeer".

The Wikipedia page needs to have a disambiguation note added to the top to clarify the very different terminology used in North America. A perhaps I will get around to this some day ... see the top of the "elk" page for a similar case.

[–]veganstoner 0 points1 point ago

[–]thesircuddles 35 points36 points ago

Hate to be that guy, but 'I see your X and raise you Y' is an illegal type of bet in poker (called a string bet). If you were to say that in a casino, you would only be allowed to call the bet, and would get a warning for string betting.

The more you know! star rainbow

[–]Forensicunit 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So its either/or? Either I see your X, or I raise you Y?

[–]thesircuddles 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you want to raise, you say 'I raise' and give a value. The value includes the original bet and your raise. So if someone bets $5, and you want to raise it by $10, you would say 'I raise, $15'. This makes your total bet $15, and he has to put in $10 to call.

If you want to call ('I see your X'), then you just say 'I call'. If you say on the table 'I see your X and raise you Y', you're calling by saying 'I see your X', which means you can do no further betting. Ergo the second part of your phrase is a string bet, which isn't allowed.

The same goes for your physical motions. You have to put your chips in all at once, you can't drag a stack at a time into the pot. If you push one stack into the pot and reach for another stack after letting go, you can't add any more chips. You've either called or raised, based on how much you put in (bare minimum is a call, if you're short you have to add more chips).

The dealer will usually warn you and may even be very kind the first time and let you correct your mistake, but you're lucky to ever have that happen.

[–]bottom_dweller 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is so. The only thing missing, for those who don't know, is the reason for this rule: it is to prevent you from trying to gauge a reaction from an opponent by saying 'I see you...' or moving some of your stack in, and then pausing before deciding whether to go ahead with a raise.

[–]PureClass 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you, both of you. I have learnt something to piss off friends while playing poker.

[–]SonicEuthanasia 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was under the impression that you could say "I see your X and raise you Y" so long as you made one motion, and said it quickly, as opposed to like "I see your X (beat) and raise you Y".

I'm gonna guess a horrible battle with wolves who at it partially, tearing off an antler and opening the hide, then it was left for dead and managed to get up and bolt, and succumbed to blood loss and cold while it was sufficiently deep in snow to be held up and some coyotes had at its exposed back and innards over the night

It would be more accurate to say that a random person thought it would be a good idea to place the reindeer like that as a protest to drivers who don't report roadkills. The road authorities said it would distract drivers, potentially causing accidents, so calling it a "security measure" is a bit of a stretch.

i think it probably got hit by a car (during periods of heavy snow animals congregate in the easiest terrain to move in, mountain roads are no exception) then it either tried running away or a snow plow plowed it onto the side of the road, then the snow started melting and it happened to come to rest in that convenient pose, then crows/scavengers picked away at it.

It's not uncommon to see ungulates with only one antler...the other typically being lost during the velvet phase. Also if wolves had attacked, it wouldn't have stayed so intact. Everything would be scattered everywhere.

tl:dr I minored in wildlife biology for a semester

[–]superfuzzy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It died from being hit by a car. Then it was partially eaten by scavengers. Then it froze, in the pained expression you see here. The reindeer is then discovered, and raised up rightside up and put by the side of the road to deter speeders.

They're "road signs" placed there by somebody in the Reindeer industry to warn drivers to slow down and stop killing their herd.

No one knows who it is that has taken the drastic measures in use, but it is a known fact that deer collisions each year costs the reindeer industry in Finnmark expensive.

It costs them EXPENSIVE. A whole expensive! That's gotta be more than "lots" I'd think.

With Scourge comes death and disease. We often overlook that the wildlife of a Scourge infested area is ravaged and ultimately destroyed by rot and contagion.

For most of the indigenous beasts of the Dragonblight it is too late. The festering disease that the Scourge brings has already infected the beasts and they are now rabid and rotting.

You must venture west, towards the Pit of Narjun, and cull the infected wildlife. Check their corpses for a preserved organ as we need one to devise a vaccine.

Kill the beasts to prevent the spread and bring me a rot resistant organ.

Upon completion of this quest you will gain:

250 reputation with Warsong Offensive

This one time i was driving home and this deer ran out in front of me, slick roads, and deer have a terrible time running on asphalt as it is, so it is just running in place basically, and I can't stop in time, BAM, and the whole right front of my car is done. A day later i go back, and that stupid deer is laying there dead, so i stood the bastard up on the side of the road, for the lulz, it was pretty funny cause everyone is slowing WAY down, cause you know, they think the damn thing is going to run out in front of them, then they see it is just a dead deer. It stayed like that for a while until somebody on a snow mobile hit it and knocked it down, from what I hear
