My boyfriend's dog does this. He nearly slid off a cliff when we went hiking a couple winters ago. It was adorable and funny until it was terrifying. Luckily he was smart enough to jump up at the last second.

We had a crazy Golden Retriever that used to do this down our sled-hill. He'd get going pretty fast and try to get back to his feet and then yardsale into the bushes. He even hit our jump once and ate serious shit into the tree.
