I've never had anything besides a black background on Windows or the default purplish on Ubuntu..

Hell, on every phone I've had, I take a picture while it's in my pocket so I can set the background to a black image..

How do you know the duckling is happy? It can't change the shape pf its beak, nor does it have eye brows.

I think it's more of a case of us humans projecting what we recognize as happy features. Other examples include turtles, which from a certain angle, look like they're smiling.
