Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Shit, never really thought about it before, but at what point and for how long do the adult teeth sit locked and loaded like that?

[–]elikat 148 points149 points ago

I'm almost 26 and I still have an adult tooth that never came down. I assume it's still sitting there....waiting....

Both my mom and older brother still have baby teeth where no adult tooth grew in behind them.

[–]verafast 13 points14 points ago

I'm 38 and got a baby tooth pulled just before Christmas. No tooth behind it to push it out.

I'm the same way. I am 27 and I still have both my baby eye teeth. One is going strong, but the other one is super loose. I'm not looking forward to the day it falls out.

I had to get my adult k9s removed for some reason and apparently my baby ones are ganna fall out now, so I will be left with no k9s and hvae to pay 10k for some fake ones. I hate surgery

[–]Kmartrules 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I have 2 teeth missing, both top teeth to the outside of the canine. I guess it's common for some adult teeth to not exist. I find it weird because I don't think it's common for any other body part, bone etc to simply not grow.

If those teeth did grow my mouth would be really crowded but without them my teeth fit perfectly, maybe your body grows less teeth if you have a smaller jaw?

[–]pwnies 1 point2 points ago

You should probably get that checked out. I had a tooth like that as well, turned out that it was oriented sideways and was just doing a grand tour of my lower jaw. Started as my left canine, when I finally had oral surgery it was at my right canine.

[–]chantistar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Im not exactly sure but the face grows and so does the jaw while kids age. It is very interesting when you can see teeth come and go on your kiddos. This pic is kinda helpful but I'm sad to know a baby died

" Most permanent canines, premolars, and second molars emerge between 10 and 12 years. Finally the third molar emerges around 18 years."- White & Folkens' "Human Bone Manual" (the bible of Osteology).

Individual variation also needs to be considered. Interestingly enough, there has been success aging sub-adult skeletal remains by analyzing the emergence of their permanent teeth. Given some individual variance, they tend to emerge in a predictable order related to chronological age.

As an aside, this response just validated my "Human Osteology" class from last semester.

Opened it up, saw what it was all about, just about to close the tab... and then I see the booger video.

How could I resist. The others? Well the others were run of the mill, sure they were of high quality. I mean they the best at what they do. But this one was different. I knew then I had to know more.

And so, in a state of trepidation I hovered over the link. The cursor tracing the triangle of play. Was this really what I wanted? I still had a choice, close the tab, enjoy some pictures of cats, move on with my life.

I didn't, I was a fool. Pressure on my fingertip and an audible click, the show has begun. The first thing I noticed was the expression on the mans face. Eyes scrunched up like a scared child. His own body turned traitor. The humiliation as the cold stainless steel tools enter him.

The Doctors hands were steady and calm but couldnt find the purchase needed. The fight between the doctor and the booger was fierce and fraught. The chaotic and disabling effects of nature and the sterile order imposed by man.

The first round went to the booger. The hand pulls away, a spec of the beast still lingers at the end of the lance. A moment to regroup and recoup. The forceps force their way in a little more and open the cavity a little wider, the other hand sees his chance and strikes.

The first attempt fails. He tries again. But the beast is wily and manages to avoid the grasp. Determination spurs him on, over and over he snatches and comes away empty. Then finally, it sticks. A solid grip.

The withdrawl is slow and measured, I believe it was in respect to a worthy adversary. And then we see the monster. The size is enough to warrant a corner of my nightmares, larger than a mans finger it kept sliding out the cave of his face and into my reality. But dont think that it was the size alone that gripped my imagination. The texture was what caught me off gaurd, solid as a rock and grizzled. The colour of mold found under the rim of of a motorside toilet engulfed in the slime of my primordial fears.

And as the red line engorged its gray buffer prey in completion I stared at the screen, a changed and broken man.

When I was still a tech, one of our attendings asked if I'd help him while he I&Ded a cyst on this guy's ass... so as we're going in, he mentions that he doesn't deal with ass well and I figure this should be fun.

He cuts in and this nasty pus splats out and the stench punches us in the nose like a boxing glove. [–]down_vote_magnet 56 points57 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, it's awesome. I find it pretty cool to see the size of the adult teeth in waiting. That would explain why lots of kids and early teenagers have big front teeth, because the teeth were ready to go at full size but the kid's face hasn't grown into them yet.

Also cool to see the cluster fuck at the bottom. I guess if you had your jaw badly broken at this point, there's a chance some of your as yet unseen adult teeth could get smashed too, and then either not come up properly or come up in fragments? Anyone know about this kind of thing?

[–]TheOtherSarah 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My sister faceplanted at speed and smashed her front teeth (top row) inward as a kid. She had to have surgery to make sure her adult teeth would come through properly.

[–]meeohmi 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mom worked as a nurse in a pediatric PCP's office for a long time.. She said she saw one boy who slipped in the bath and landed with his top teeth squarely on the side of the tub (like he was going to bite it, for a better visual), effectively pushing them back up into his jaw (his adult teeth had just started to grow in). Supposedly, and this is hard to believe, but supposedly, the doctor said they'd eventually just come back out on their own...

[–]TheOtherSarah 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are pretty resilient, aren't they? To clarify what I said before, my sister's teeth were bent towards the back of her mouth (not just following the same paths back in), and it was still only her gums that needed work, not the bone.

[–]meeohmi 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh I wasn't contradicting you, just sharing my own cringe-inducing tooth story

[–]DiscountLlama 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a similar story. When I was a kid, I tripped while walking around a wooden coffee table in our house, and imbedded my two front teeth in it. I had to wear fake front teeth until the gums healed and my adult teeth started growing in.

[–]xafimrev 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My wife actually didn't have adult teeth in two spots on her lower jaw, 4th tooth back on either side.

She had her two baby teeth until she was 37. They started to come loose so she had them removed and replaced with implants. HOLY $$$, no seriously it was a lot of cash. Like $4k for two dental implants.

[–]MisterHuah 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Trauma to the primary (baby) teeth can most certainly affect permanent (adult) teeth. Check this out. Intrusion-type of trauma of the primary tooth is particularly fun for its successor. And by fun, I mean not fun.

kinda sucks they don't regen... you'd think that space up there could start growing another replacement in case you lose an adult tooth too

[–]Senorcakepants 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There isn't actually space, much bone was removed in order to depict that hollow look. There's a bunch of bone remodeling that occurs during this process so that the mandible isn't extremely fragile and empty (there's also lots of connective tissue and such).

[–]rdarken 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What about where the teeth are before descending? Once they grow in, does your body grow new bone I those holes?

[–]thatrudedude 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, as the tooth erupts through the bone, the path it takes is filled in with bone. This leaves the roots secure in bone and the crowns in the oral cavity ready to chew.

[–]Endyo 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Senorcakepants 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This isn't how it works. As your teeth develop they push up against the roots of primary teeth and cause resorption of the primary roots - which is why when your baby teeth fall out they do not have roots attached. Then the adult teeth have a clear path to break through the gums.

[–]noking 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And also, I suppose, causes the baby teeth to fall out in the first place?

[–]Senorcakepants 8 points9 points ago

Correct, once the roots are gone there is nothing anchoring the teeth into bone.

I thought you might also find it interesting that skulls are VERY valuable, worth thousands of dollars, because it is so difficult to obtain them nowadays. The skulls we were given in school to study off of were about 50 years old.

pretty sure this is at the mutter museum in philly. there's an entire wall of skulls in one room, and the entire museum is dedicated to medical oddities. it's a gross but very interesting place.

This is fascinating and horrifying at the same time. Every time i see a skeleton, questions like these cross my mind -

Who was he/she in real life? That "thing" was a real person - laughing / crying/playing. How did that person's bones end up on a shelf? Does his/her parents/loved ones know? ...... And so on. Reminds me of my own morality...I get sad.

I hope he/she had a good life. That is all I can do.

I feel a weird kind of sensation from seeing trypophobia pictures (now and earlier). Its a sense of disgust and crawling skin, BUT its also kind of strangely satisfying to look at these pictures. I dont know of a comparable feeling, this is quite unique.

There has to be some sort of research on this... it seems that Trypophobia is way too common for it to have go unnoticed.

Fun fact: the development and eruption of these teeth is the easiest way to determine the age of human children remains using a comparison chart like this.

This one is probably around 5.5 years old.

This is... strange and alien... It's like our face is just loaded up with teeth waiting to be fired off like a needler from Halo.
At the same time it seems weird that we get exactly two sets of teeth. WTF happened there? Why two? Why can't we just grow as many sets as we'll need?

[–]inazuma 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is how my frame of mind went during the two minutes I saw this picture:

first 30 seconds: Whoa this is cool, I can see where the teeth are growing in.

31-60 seconds: hey wait I think they had to cut open part of that skull to see where the teeth are...

60-120 seconds: fuck fuck fuck fuck fcuk i'm gonna have nightmares and now i wanna puke

Just got to see this in real life, sorta. My 2 year old fell off a chair and came down on the edge of the chair, mouth open, top teeth first. After all the bleeding stopped (looked like a crime scene) and my pulse went back to a somewhat normal level, I notice all his top teeth were gone. The top four in front. Just gone. I whisked him to the ER where they did an x-ray after some stitches. By the way, this would also be my answer to what was the worst day of your life. Anyhow, they did a whole head x-ray and showed that the teeth were pushed back up into the jaw where they came from. It was amazing to see. They pointed out all the adult teeth waiting to drop down/come up. After a few months, the baby teeth started to drop back down but they are kind of twisted a bit. Doctors say its actually a fairly common occurrence and he should develop normally. The human body is AMAZING. He still climbs on chairs. Babies are stupid.

[–]LessLikeYou 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Humans are capable of growing endless teeth but the gene is turned off. Stupid fucking gene...I want unlimited teeth--make that toothfairy pay.

[–]aemily89 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Legit question: What happens to the long roots of your baby teeth when they come out? I remember pulling my baby teeth out with just a little root... But those are almost an inch long. What happens to the rest?

[–]APiousCultist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just did a quick Wikipedia and it seems that the adult teeth cause the roots to dissolve and be reabsorbed.
