/Melvin: The most likely explanation of déjà vu is not that it is an act of "precognition" or "prophecy", but rather that it is an anomaly of memory, giving the false impression that an experience is "being recalled".[2][3] This explanation is supported by the fact that the sense of "recollection" at the time is strong in most cases, but that the circumstances of the "previous" experience (when, where, and how the earlier experience occurred) are quite uncertain or believed to be impossible. Likewise, as time passes, subjects can exhibit a strong recollection of having the "unsettling" experience of déjà vu itself, but little or no recollection of the specifics of the event(s) or circumstance(s) they were "remembering" when they had the déjà vu experience. In particular, this may result from an overlap between the neurological systems responsible for short-term memory and those responsible for long-term memory (events which are perceived as being in the past).

TL:DR Deja Vu is your brain thinking you've been in a similar situation, not remembering and trying to cover its tracks by telling you it remembers.

Eh, I dont buy it. I have frequent dejavu but I know it all comes from my dreams, in situations that when I had the dream, I hadnt been in yet.

This is thought to be an evolutionary purpose of dreams, or nightmares. To create artificial experiences in your mind, so your brain can simulate your response, should a similar experience in real life occur your body has a preset and practiced response. This is thought to be the purpose of nightmares, to put yourself in stressful situations as a trial run to your responses, without actually having to be in said situation. Now something similar happens that your brain recognizes, probably ties the real experience to a practice dream experience.

I think it's far more likely its legitimate memory, albeit from a subconscious dream.

We don't remember all the dreams we have, and studies also show that we constantly rehash all sorts of encountered situations From that day when we dream. Hence why it's recommended that we study something before bed as its the nearest point at which the previous day is mulled over and over again.

People tend to forget how complex and powerful the brain really is, it's somewhat prescient at times, albeit coincidentally. This, the term déjà vu. You've experienced it before because it's something your brain has correctly predicted for that point and place in time.

I don't think so bro. When I have deja vu, the memory is very specific but seems very unimportant. For instance, I was just in Denver for the first time in my life, walking down the 16th St Mall when suddenly I remember all kinds of specific things, like the busted up Ford Explorer at the intersection and the green skirt this woman has on even though its 35 degrees outside. Just seems so statically impossible that my brain dreamt this exact situation up, in a place that I had no idea what it even looked like a day earlier, but suddenly I remember it vividly for about 3 seconds.
