[–]Tableau 168 points169 points ago

Yeah, I went to my first "hardcore" show recently and I was really confused. Everyone was standing against the wall so I, being the enthusiastic guy I am, stood in the middle of the floor and just started rocking out. Some guy runs by flailing and smacks me in the face, so I threw him on the ground. Now people are mad at me for some reason? I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE RULES.

[–]Havefa1th 111 points112 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're in the middle of the pit, you're there at your own risk. Basically there are two rules: never go for anyone in particular and if someone falls, everything stops to pick them up. Those are the rules lol

[–]UnholyDemigod 94 points95 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've always found that odd about pits. Everyone jumps, punches, kicks, headbutts, and elbows everyone around them, but as soon as someone falls over? STOP EVERYTHING - someone needs assistance.

EDIT: Owing to the responses I'm getting explaining why people do this, I should probably point out I'm aware of the reasons. You go to a concert to enjoy music, not kill people. If someone gets a few bruises, big deal, it's going to happen, but serious injuries and death are avoidable. I don't think it makes pit etiquette weird, it makes it seem weird.

[–]noobasaur 176 points177 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Gentleman's warfare, basically. Late 19th century Europe would be proud.

[–]Datastream 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pure anger intensified by the music. You basically get all that stress out of your system by just punching whatever is in your vicinity. At the end you might have bruises and a ripped clothing but you'll feel fresh.

[–]v_velox 29 points30 points ago

Being on your ass in a thick pit is an unsalvageable wreck of a place to be in if no one gets you on your feet. If one or two people don't pick you up, you're going to stay there and get mashed like spuds.

A lot of bands remind people to pick up those that fall in the pit and some bands will stop playing if someone gets knocked down or falls while crowd surfing. The latter mainly at all ages shows.

I'd say it is human decency.

[–]bandwidthvampire 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Human decency and pit courtesy. I helped drag some dude out of a pit after he got knocked out, and I know that if I got knocked out, I'd want someone to help me.

[–]Red_AtNight 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I used to get really in the thick of it, I've been knocked off my feet and had people catch me before I even hit the ground. Somebody sees you falling, they grab you and put you back on your feet.

[–]zombiemaggot22 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I can not speak for everyone but i know I always help people up because if someone get killed the the show is over and I don't want that to happen.

[–]Cbecker7 16 points17 points ago

2007 I saw The Acacia Strain, there was a wall of death for the song Carbomb. One kid tripped on his way to the middle, and I stopped and helped him up, probably preventing some serious damage from being trampled on. Half of the people in this thread are bitching about "real hardcore," and I know TAC isn't on the terms of that, but I wasn't around for some post-punk hardcore movement to be part of and I can't really come to appreciate the old hardcore.

TL;DR Probably saved a kids life, I don't care for old hardcore

[–]zombiemaggot22 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

so back in 09 me and my best friend go to see Snot, 10 years (they sucked) and Mudvayne during Snot they had us do the wall of death and I lost my friend in the split up so they count down and we run next thing I know I am on the ground so I go to the fetal position just hope not to die then all of a sudden I feel some one land on top of me and brace them self so that I don't get killed so I look up and it was my best friend he had no clue it was me he just saw someone and fell to protect them.

TL;DR I fucking read your whole thing now read mine

[–]EH1987 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All that flailing and kicking isn't anywhere near as dangerous s being trampled.

[–]MedievalValor 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's about letting out some frustration. You can do it in your bedroom, but seeing your favorite band live is just indescribable. The feeling, I mean.

Let out frustration, but be safe. You don't go into the pit strictly to hurt people.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because people on the ground can be trampled and killed, which has happened before. Most people aren't going to be killed by an errant fist flailing about willynilly.

[–]h0er 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was at an Ignite show, somebody fell and hurt himself real bad, I think he broke his leg. Some people started protecting him on the ground, the pit grinded to a halt. Zoli Teglas (frontman of Ignite) saw that and stopped in the middle of the show and alerted the medics. (I suck at storytelling, this was at Groezrock, or Ieperfest, both in BE, can't remember, sorry)

Being in at a hardcore show or in a pit is a very special feeling, but you have to be there to appreciate it.

[–]xtfftc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not odd.. People go into the pit voluntary. They know it's likely to hurt but that's part of the fun. However, falling over is dangerous, so it's only natural to provide assistance when needed.

[–]Mograne 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember the first big hardcore show I went to. A random guy needed to tie his shoe, but the crowd was moving nonstop. So me and 4 other random dudes just formed a circle around him so he could. Sounds kinda lame but it was badass at the time.

[–]sTmykal 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah that's not lame - that's totally how it should work. I've done it and have had it done for me.

[–]hilarious_gimmick 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A buddy of mines shoe came off and got lost in the crowd. When he found it we did this so he could get it back on. The next day he realized that while he had a matching pair the right shoe was 2 sizes bigger.

[–]Azurphax 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except

at 'hardcore' shows.

the pit rule at hardcore shows its to whip your appendages around as hard as possible (windmill), ignoring everything, hoping that someone comes by and gets whacked. If they retaliate, your whole crew gets to try and beat them down.

..And that's why I don't go to 'hardcore' shows anymore. Because this has happened to me more than once. I was spoiled with local metal shows where its all, run around, slam into people, lots of smiles, get pushed back by the rim of the pit, get picked up by everyone within arms length the instant you hit the ground... 'Hardcore' kids (the douchy kind, I'm sure there's respectable 'hardcore' people) throw punches and kicks. They want to hit someone.

[–]bchris24 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah always thought those rules were a bit odd, when I was seeing Enter Shikari at Warped Tour these guys started swinging at each other so I ran over there to break it up but by the time I got there they were hugging and patting each other on the back smiling and then went on with their business.

I was at some tiny death metal show on a tuesday afternoon that had almost more bands than fans in the crowd (I found out that some of the dudes in the pit with me were from bands that were yet to perform). After I finally got out ~5 hours later some kid pats me on the back and says "It's cool to see an old dude mosh". I'm 30 -_-

[–]ahnmin 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm in the same boat, I've just grown way too old and tired to be swung back and forth in a humid mass of bodies only to remember about 8% of the actual band playing.

Although on occasion I'll miss going home with my shirt drenched in everyone else's sweat and a combat boot-sized black and blue imprint on my forehead.

[–]layout420 16 points17 points ago

Enh... It's always been trend driven. I'm just glad I wasted my youth in pits that were fun, sloppy, and full every kind of weird kid - male or female.

Gimme a pit from the '80s any day. Sometimes you just need a good musical/social beating to remind yourself that you're alive.

When it began, for those who don't know it didn't matter how you looked or what you wore to a show. Dress codes, FUCK NO! We didn't care about the brand of your jeans and all that shit in your hair

But now the biggest part is all about the image and not the art. Fashion before passion!

And at nights, it makes me mad that I should have to ask: What happened to the passion? What happened to the reason for screaming? What happened the music and the message that I love? What happened to the hard work? And why does everybody look the same?

Wow, you guys are making me feel nostalgic. I remember going to all-ages hardcore shows in the 80's. Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law, & Circle Jerks to name a few. Mosh pits and stage diving were in ithier infancy back then. I remember going to a Social Distortion show when they turned all cow country. Everyone in the mosh pit literally started to do the bunny hop. It was hilarious... True story...

I am in a band where crowds do this type of thing and even though that means people are into it and having a good time, it still doesn't change that I think it looks completely stupid. People get WAY too into it and when they don't care about the safety of others it really pisses me off.

Holy shit no way hahah. Dude I saw you in Spartanburg, SC in 2010. Gnarly ass show. Sick pit, too, even though you apparently hate them. By the way one of the fucking guitar players spat on me, give him shit for that.

[–]evantide 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't hate them, honestly. There's nothing that pumps me up more than when people are dancing and going crazy. I just have been hit in crowds before and I know it sucks. I know plenty of people who mind their own space and do their own thing. It's just when people choose to completely disregard their surroundings or are there just to hurt people. It definitely goes both ways, though. Total catch-22.

Thank you, by the way hahaha.

We, as a community, hate the kids that go out trying to hurt people. I would hope you could get pumped that not only do people pay to see you, but that your music creates so much emotion that they dance to it.

Relevant story. In like 2008 you guys were playing in Albany, Ga at a skate park. Ya'll were playing and a hate mosher knocked my friend out and gave him a really serious concussion. I get that you guys are really brutal and all (not really my thing but you were very good at what ya'll do ;P) and that people just want to go crazy, but there is a line. That night was a perfect example of when it gets crossed. I feel that in the last few years common sense has pretty much disappeared in not just the metalcore scene but hardcore one too. It's really disappointing, I hate playing shows where my main thought is hoping that no one gets hurt while we play.

Old guy here. Used to slam dance at punk shows. Throwing a punch was a big no no. Last time I was in a pit was at a Soundgarden show and people were beating each other. Fun!

[–]DanCarlson 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A Day To Remember's "disrespect your surroundings" line before a breakdown has created some of the douchiest hardcore "dancers" I have ever seen. To them it is license to hit kids in the crowd, push people over in circlepits, crowd kill into people's faces, etc. your comment reminded me of that.

i remember when they wouldnt let (the one) girl(s) in the pit, and people would actually put their hand down to help the guy up who fell.

[–]evantide 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's precisely why the "push mosh" is better in my opinion. Everyone is in there just to have fun and there is a universal rule of picking people up when they fall. Hardcore dancing on the other hand is usually a competition and about who is tougher. Love the push moshers.

[–]buhzie2 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Push pits were the shiiiiit.... they were actually fun to be in! Now it's a "Get a backwards flailing fist to the eye" pit.

I saw you guys in Jerome, ID years ago playing with As Blood Runs Black and Palehorse. Awesome show. A fight nearly broke out between the Idaho Falls hardcore guys and the Boise hardcore guys, I remember the vocalist stopping and saying "208 please don't hate!" I think the vid was up on your myspace for a bit back in the day. I saw you guys with The Acacia Strain recently and it was the complete opposite. I remember the vocalist encouraging people to get violent and punch the motherfucker next to them. I am surprised to see you be so against the dumb shit you sometimes see in pits though I am glad to hear it. Keep up the good work!

[–]evantide 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Damn, that's even older than the show someone else posted. Crazy shit. Yeah, there's definitely some of the required "image" and presence that you have to maintain on stage, especially at a big show like the Welcome To Hell Tour, but the bottom line is that we want everyone to leave the show having had a good time. Keeping it respectful and fun, but going crazy too.

[–]jkats14 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's awesome! It's great to see bands that care about the safety of your fans (I prefer push mosh too). I actually saw you guys in Portland, Maine over the summer and helped out with the interview my brother did. I wasn't really into your music before the show, but I love what you guys do now. Keep up the brutality!

[–]ryansweet 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For those of you complaining about how this has been popping up in record amounts recently, refer to this Sick of it All video from '94.

It's been happening in this capacity since the days of Minor Threat and Bad Brains in the early '80s so it's by no means new, though I can admit that it has definitely transcended hardcore punk into the thousands of lesser subgenres.

[–]AstorSapolsky 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The difference is (thanks for posting a Sick of it All song, by the way, was hoping someone did) before I could go to a hardcore show and have hardcore dancing. Then, if I decided I didn't want hardcore dancing, I could go see Machine Head.

Now, if I want hardcore dancing I can go to any show from Melt Banana to Megadeth because it is fucking everywhere.

In 2004 I took a road trip with a friend to see Dillinger Escape Plan in Seattle. We had read some reviews about how insane they are live and were pretty excited.

We got to the venue expecting this, but were surprised when some shitty emo/hardcore whatever the fuck bands opened and we got this

I was no newbie to the concert scene, I had probably been to about 50 shows in the previous year but had never seen this crap before.

Eventually Dillinger made it out, the hardcore crowd exploded, and we laughed a lot during that 6 hour drive home about the emo kids "emoing" all over the place.

[–]WokeUpOlder 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I saw Dillinger at Warped '10 and I had no clue what it was going to be like. As soon as they opened with Panasonic Youth, some chick got lifted over the barricades holding her nose. Her hand slipped off for a bit, and the blood came pouring out. Then they signed condoms for me after their set.

[–]hectorjr 4 points5 points ago

Wen they were touring with Deftones and came to Chicago they decided to also headline a smaller venue. The show started at around midnight. This is what we got: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y4a4jduPuA&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Can we stop ripping on emo now? This band Snowing was probably the most emo band going for a while and their last show was insane. Stage dives for days. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5HdxSQv6bg&t=1m45s

Touche Amore is emotive as fuck and their live show is always ridiculous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f30T4_UPtM

Emo does not equal bad early 2000's pop punk.

Oh it was still worth it. I had worked my way up front and center when they opened with Mullet Burden. Greg also charged the crowd like in the video I posted. Probably the most intense moment of any concert I have ever been to. Definitely worth the trip.

I personally saw the hardcore stomp as far back as 93. I believe it goes back even further.

Source: my eyeballs

[–]DrSmoke 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know what kind of shit shows you were going to back then...

Back when I went to concerts, only the biggest, baddest motherfuckers in a pit got to stomp through it. Doing so was a giant flag, screaming "I think I'm the biggest badass here, does anyone disagree?"

Said 'stomper' was then the focus of the pit. The problem is this new generation is a bunch of pussies. They don't even have mosh pits, its just a bunch of flailing douchebags.

[–]Habe 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can concur. I saw this stuff at emo shows in Santa Barbara in the early 90s, and also at hardcore shows through California in the early to mid-90s. I think it started with the windmill through the pit, and then to the corkscrew windmill, and then shit just got nuts.

[–]Magixren 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it started from Slam Dancing, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKoozg5nS-k 1980's

[–]AstorSapolsky 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But it was only in emo and hardcore shows. Now every asshole from doom/sludge metal concerts to a fucking Aquabats show thinks they ought to start swinging wild.

[–]tastylumpkin 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I certainly saw glimpses of it in the late 90s, but it was in NO way as prevalent back then. Now its just the fad dance move that everybody does.

[–]Clamburglar 7 points8 points ago
