I've never read harry potter. I've never seen the matrix. We have it sitting out there on dvd, it's my roommates copy. I thought HL2 was good, but not great.

Potter - Don't cry yourself to sleep, I haven't either.

Matrix - see the first one, it's enjoyable on many levels. For nothing else see it for the groundbreaking footage that started the whole slow-mo/3D/multi-angle/360 thing.

HL2 vs the gazillion new ones - meh, same basic concept, better graphics and they started charging you for extras.

You're OK, don't worry about it.

[–]OverAnalyzesPost 54 points55 points ago

The age bracket for which first generation Pokemon was ravingly popular is itself quite small, but those within it are at this time mostly either upperclassmen in college or just entering the workforce. While this is probably reddit's most active demographic, it by no means holds a majority of members. Thus it's no surprise that many don't bother with Pokemon posts but they remain popular and receive ample upvotes.

If I had to provide a very narrow range of birth-years most associated with the (good) Pokemon craze, I'd guess 1988-1992.

I've actually been thinking of picking one of them up just to check it out, really all I've played was Pokemon Snap, which was pretty alright for a rental at least... What would be the easiest one to start with, and easiest way to play it, does the 3ds have backwards compatibility all the way to GBC games?

[–]Colostomy 0 points1 point ago

I'd suggest getting a Gameboy Advance Emulator and trying out Pokémon Leaf Green or Fire Red, or getting Soul Silver or Heart Gold on your DS.

[–]SamsquamtchHunter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't have a DS, Thinking about buying one though, for more than pokemon of course... Did you mean those together, as in I can get an emulator for a DS?

[–]Colostomy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry I was thinking of another person's comment that mentioned a DS.

You can get emulators for pretty much all consoles on computer.

You can play Gameboy Advance games on a DS, so I'd suggest playing either Leaf Green or Fire Red (Gameboy Advance games) then either Heart Gold or Soul Silver (DS games).

[–]aarchaput 0 points1 point ago

the real reason is that Pokemon is a series of games that can be genuinely liked by most demographics. Girls and boys can like it, so can their parents. Plus, pokemon was encouraged much more by adults than any other games were due to the violent video games arguments. I grew up with Pokemon Red and Gold (brother got Blue and Silver) and after that we both stopped playing, though we each had GBAs and I got the DS phat and recently got a 3DS. I never played genIII or IV, but I grabbed gen V on a whim and really enjoyed myself with it all over again. I'm currently 19 (20 in February) and I don't have any friends who continue to play the games really.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

It seems like a waste of time to watch a kids television show when I could do anything else. I understand how kids shows might be entertaining, but grown men OBSESS over My Little Pony and that I just don't get.

[–]Idontlikecock 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They don't 'OBSESS' over them. Of course, some people may obsess, but not most. In fact most of the grown men that do watch it just do it because it is like being a kid again. Is there anything wrong with feeling like a kid again?

It's a general-audiences RPG in which you collect and raise (level up) creatures called Pokemon (Pocket Monsters) and then fight them to earn gym badges/beat the baddies and become a Pokemon Master by defeating the four/five strongest trainers in the region.

It's simple on the outside so kids enjoy it, there's quite a bit of depth to the system that older players also have something to enjoy in the metagame.

[–]jay76 1 point2 points ago

creatures called Pokemon (Pocket Monsters)

Well fuck, now it makes sense. I always thought is was Japanese.

[–]dreamendDischarger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Japanese have a habit of shortening long terms into two to three syllable terms that are easier to say/remember. For example, if you've heard of cosplay (dressing up as a favorite character), it comes from 'Costume Play' and the game series Monster Hunter becomes Monhun. =)

TV show/movies are pretty meh imo. Decent timewaster, but I wouldn't go to too much effort to obtain them. The games are pretty neat, though. I don't play competitively (no head for it/patience to learn), but I like reading about competitive play and the metagame.

[–]Kensin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i've known people who play competitively, but I've never done it. I was just in it for the love the game :) Going to the movies in some theaters meant getting a rare card or Pokemon transferred to your gameboy, so it had it's perks, although I only caught a few of the movies in the theater (mostly due to their limited release)

You're never too old. Grab a copy of pokemon black/white if you have a DS and try it out. If you like it, great. If you don't then you can at least know you gave it a shot and it just wasn't for you. =3

I've played some of them on emulators and they're great games. I just know that I would have loved them so much more if I were 10 years old when they came out.

Aaaah, agreed on that account then. I'm pretty sure that's why I regard it as fondly as I regard Mario games or the Legend of Zelda. =) They were all part of my childhood.

Also it's impossible to find a good monster-raising game that hasn't been dumbed down over the years... they've even dumbed down Monster Rancher quite a bit, where as Pokemon has gotten more complex beneath the surface. =/ I suppose it's just a genre I like because cute little monsters fighting appeals to me.

I am in the same boat. I wish I could relate to these posts and look back fondly on years spent "catchin' 'em all" or whatever the fuck; but alas, it's too late for me.

I'm not that old either. I don't get it. I still remember when there were 150 and when they added 1, it was a big fucking deal. I was in elementary school. I had no idea it would stay relevant.

[–]dragonite77 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

its an either you get it or you don't kind of thing i think. i personally love it, and you are mistaken, there was always 151, just nobody initially knew about the 151st, so it became a big fucking thing once it became widespread

i had to buy a gameshark to add mew to pokemon blue at twelve years old. he was NOT in the game naturally.

[–]Chaous 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes he was, but you could not obtain him without cheating/glitching. I know (and have done) a glitch that allows you to get him at level 30 within the normal game. You just have to do some wiz hackery with avoiding some traininers and timing a start button push as one gets the '!" above his head and then some walking without being able to access the start menu. In the end you fly to Lavender town, walk west and as soon as you leave the town Mew appears. Original Red and Blue it works on...not yellow or anything after.

Don't get me wrong. I love the 90s. I love nickelodeon and pogs. but pokemon just sits in the same category as magic cards. personal opinion.. to each their own! I personally don't remember anyone in college playing pokemon. maybe it was the kid in the corner with a gameboy color, with the red game sticking out of it?

not even close to the same thing. Pokemon is for little kids with no friends these days.

[–]cbrandolino 0 points1 point ago*

Those kids will become successful engineers; you'll clean up their offices.

They'll play pokémon plutonium on their 4ds with their smart and beautiful wife and think that really, did it matter much that in grade school everybody considered them not worthy of their friendship?

Not saying you're a terrible, mean person but there is a audience for pokemon players. There's competition for both the card and video games and winners of the masters division are around our age, if not a few years older. We all help each other out and enjoy ourselves by doing what we like.

I'm married, 21 years old and we both still play pokemon. You and I, we aren't so different.

This is how I feel with most of the people on here obsessed with pop culture. Making shitty hats and statues out of their favorite characters. The way people worship the original star wars has made me start to hate it.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Star wars is a movie made for children. Pokemon is a tv show made for children. Twilight and Harry Potter are books made for children. I'm convinced that people hate (or are afraid of) depth.

[–]NumberOneTheLarch 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or, perhaps because you haven't made an attempt to find any depth in these things, you assume it's simply not there, despite the fact that many people will tell you otherwise. It's alright not to like or be in to something, but if you're going to bash what other people like because of some preconceived notion of "that's for children therefore you are wrong for liking it", I gotta say the problem probably doesn't lie with those people.

[–]nevereven 0 points1 point ago

I'm grasping for a generational equivalent. I had some nice Star Wars action figures (before Empire came out), but I can't think of any toy with a TV show I've ever had. The use of 30 minute long toy commercials as a staple of child entertainment hadn't really developed yet. It wan't until later that tie ins between video games, TV shows, and toys developed. I don't think that any "characters" on my Intellivision could be bought as toys or watched as a cartoon. If you had an Atari, there might have been a pac man cartoon at some point. Smurfs and ColecoVision excepted perhaps.

Oh for those halcyon days in Mayberry!

You don't have to have watched pokemon to get 90% of the references. As a fellow outsider looking in, I'll show you the ropes.

  • People use these "slave balls" to capture various creatures with horrifying magical powers.

  • After supressing their will to resist by locking them in cramped cages, they are forced into vicious, no hold bar fights. Electrocution, water boarding, physical assault, and fire are commonly used.

Think dog fighting or bear baiting, but somehow OK.

  • After intense period of social isolation, they become victims of Stockholm Syndrome. They no longer see their oppressive masters as the brutal pimps they really are. With all thoughts of escape purged from their mind, they become more powerful and evolve into the perfect slave race.

  • The main Protagonist in all this is a 47 year old man named Ash who's physical condition prevents him from aging past 11. His goal is to enslave every pokemon and bend them to his nefarious will.

Congratulations, you now know everything about Pokemon!

No need to fret sir, with technology improving at such a rapid and increasing pace, you'll live to be over 100 no problem, and look like you're 60.

Why did I say this? Because behind the Pokemon, what plagues us all is getting old and dying. Sleep well.

This entire thread is a circlejerk of "Stop liking what I don't like" and "You have to stop enjoying things once you're an adult! Stop having fun!"

Really... if you're 'a bit old' then you'd be mature enough to accept that not everyone has the same interests and some of us happen to like things that are typically thought of as 'child' activities.

[–]AHCretin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The thing is, it's damn near a secret language for those of us not into Pokemon and a significant portion of the population here speaks it fluently. We're old and not used to being non-native speakers on the web.

TRUE STORY:

Today they changed 2 of my classes and I had to retake Geometry and I open the door to my new class and the very first word I hear is Pokemon and it came from a little Asian girl's mouth. I felt like doing that and walking out because I knew that the class was gonna be full of freshman/sophomores. I used to watch and play Pokemon but I'm too old for that shit now.

[–]theblackestbrotha 0 points1 point ago

Quick question for you before I offer my rebuttal: Just how tall is your high horse?

Guys who have friends give each other shit about stuff....its what we do. If you're not a guy, or a guy without friends, then you wouldn't understand.

[–]dreamendDischarger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, I'm a gal. I still tease my friends playfully but honestly never got the whole 'let's really goad a guy about something' because I've never had guy friends who do that, and most of my friends are guys...

Perhaps they're all wimps or secretly gay or something.

[–]theblackestbrotha 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Guys tend to take it easy on chicks. I will still pick on my female friends over little things, but i won't go for the throat like me and my buddies do to each other.
