My first thought was, "Did we just spend 2.5 hours talking about the syllabus?".

I love the curved classes. That way I have an objective incentive to deny people when they ask for help.

Hey, chem lab my first semester of undergrad really was a real eye opener for me. It's not always Intro to the History of Underwater Basketweaving.

-"I'm a bad test taker" - "No, you're STUPID! You mean you can't recall the information thats required at the moment its actually important? Well I'm sure you'll be fine in life"

[–]AutumnHawk 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, because being good at mindlessly regurgitating information onto a page is a good indicator of future success.

[–]Fafigunigen 4 points5 points ago*

Not all test are like that. My math degree exams required abstract and original thinking. Regurgitation wasn't an option because every problem was different and required a novel approach. You prepared by understanding the theorems as well as the techniques used to prove those theorems, As well as knowing all the maths from the prerequired and foundational courses.

TL;DR: regurgitating tends to be found mostly in the arts and soft science degrees. But you're only selling yourself short by "learning" that way.

If you are a bad test taker you need to learn how to de-stress and focus, and be intelligent enough for the material, which often just takes practice.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Someone doesn't watch Tosh.O

But regurgitation might not mean future success in your career, but it does determine how well you will probably do in you educational process from grade school up to college. I'm not a fan of the generalized testing that forces kids to only learn bits of material and then forget it almost immediately, but being able to return that info on a test usually is what determines whether little Billy gets that scholarship to a top school or not.

True story: My English Comp II prof removed his coat, his jacket and unbuttoned his shirt about 4 weeks before the end of the semester. He then opened his shirt like a superhero to reveal a t shirt that had "IT'S IN THE SYLLABUS" screen printed on it. He had several and wore one every day for the rest of the semester. He would threaten to unbutton his shirt any time someone asked a question that could be answered by reading the syllabus.

I know it's super nerdy but listening that first day and reading through the syllabus is probably one of the top things that keep me in good grades. I know what is going to happen, I know what is generally going to be on the tests and you can get a pretty decent idea of what the professor's class will be like just from checking it out. I always keep a printed copy in the divider for that class.

As a college freshman I was a 23 year old Army veteran. After the first day of class I thought, "YES!! My employment status is now 'some college!!'"

[–]SenTedStevens 9 points10 points ago

Is this your first semester in college? The first few semesters are just a repeat of high school with gen-ed classes. That's the GPA booster classes. I hate to break it to you, but it's only going to get harder. Much harder.

[–]VeryVariegated 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You must have gone to a shitty college. Most of my general education/core requirement courses have been interesting, insightful, and taught by great professors; incomparable to high school.

[–]hoipolloiCanSuckIt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The hoi polloi went to shitty colleges, got useless degrees, and can't do shit.

Did we? Better go quit my job that wouldn't have hired me without my useless college degree, then.

[–]MeloJelo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or maybe you just went to a shitty high school. I found my early classes to be interesting and liked most of my professors, but the material generally wasn't all that hard.

[–]VeryVariegated 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't say they were hard, but they were definitely way more substantive than high school courses. SenTedStevens said the requirement courses are a "repeat of high school".

[–]SenTedStevens 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never said they weren't interesting. The first semesters of college involve many basic subjects such as English 101, US History, General Sciences, College Algebra/Calculus, and Gordon Rule classes. Most of these classes required little more than attending most of the time and had a feel much like secondary education classes.

[–]splewis 1 point2 points ago

At every college, everywhere? Wow, you have such knowledge.

[–]marvelous_molester 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is there a college where you start out with complicated shit and then work back to the simpler ones? I'm pretty sure every college everywhere builds on prior knowledge from highschool and earlier, easier, college courses.

[–]splewis 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not saying things don't get harder. I'm questioning the "The first few semesters are just a repeat of high school with gen-ed classes" part. I don't think most universities "repeat" high school.

All colleges that aren't trade schools do indeed tend to mirror high school due to general Ed requirements. You normally get to choose which classes you take at any given time so those classes might not actually happen first semester.

[–]SenTedStevens 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Is there any college that immediately starts you into core curriculum classes? I haven't heard of any. The first few semesters are pre-reqs and general ed classes. Then you get into core classes. It's only going to get harder from there.

Regardless of the subject, this is how every class has been for me.

Class full of Upperclassmen: What the hell is going on here?!

Just wait until the more in-depth classes where even reading the textbook for the class amounts to "Hmm... hmm.. yeah, I do know some of these words."

For me back in my college days my thought flow for a class was as follows:

  1. What is this dude talking about? I don't know any of this shit and I'm going to fail this class

  2. Ok that makes a "little" sense at least I can focus on this part and get it down for the exam

  3. Everything kind of flows together.

Don't worry so much it all flows together at the end - happened every single course I took and my freshman year I was panicking but by my senior year I just trusted that it was would all flow together.

Yeah, my Differential Equations class was like that. First day of class I was like, "Integrating factor, what?" And then I 4.0'd the class.

I started my college career three days after graduating from high school. First class was American History starting after the civil war. The professor 's lecture was so good I completely forgot to take notes. I just wasn't used to people lecturing so well and keeping it entertaining. He stopped me after class and reminded me I should be writing everything down. I felt like an idiot but looking back most college freshman lean that way.

My last name is early in the alphabet and my first class was the run in the mill college writing first-year small class.

Turns out I had one week to do a 20 minute presentation by myself....I almost died.

[–]sivlin 0 points1 point ago

First degree in Political Science, which I'll give you is basically a general arts major. Second Degree is Computer Science which I'll finish with this fall. I'm unsure if you go to college or what degree you are, but most of the state colleges are not in it to actually teach you anything. It is a business, and they make more money from continued studies than failing people out.
