Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I was called "gay" in class because I was able to recount the history and US reaction of the Achille Lauro hijacking and how it impacted the events of 9/11.

The professor freaked out and kicked the kid out of class. I urged him not to do so because it was people like that who lowered the mean.

I'm 34 and going back this year. All these comments have made my day.

[–]nyosdfyer 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I went back at 26. Even those few years made a huge difference in my dedication and what I got out of it. Instead of "shit, I have class today" it became "wonder what interesting things I'll learn today?" I talk to my friends that did the traditional route straight out of HS and they can barely remember college. Seems like a waste of time and money to me.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've waited to go because I didn't know what I wanted to do straight out of high school either. I have a much better understanding of the world now as well as how I want to participate in it. I've also found so many ways to educate myself for free in the meantime that I'm not looking forward to paying for books and so forth.

[–]wagedomain 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good on you for not treating college like "High School+" like most people. Seriously. Too much babysitting happens on college campus.

[–]nyosdfyer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. That was one of the most shocking things when I went back. You see that first tuition statement/book receipt and shit a brick. Paying for it yourself is quite the motivator.

[–]JoelQuest 64 points65 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was 34... first time. So glad I waited. KIDS ARE DUMB.

I did get invited to a number of parties though... yeah... like I want to be the only legal adult at a party full of idiot kids partying and puking.

[–]Ratran 22 points23 points ago

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

yes, and I was charged with witnessing them drinking and not reporting it to the police

I agree on the kids thing, it just seems like I am either way smarter or way more focused. Probably more of the latter and a little of the former. I do have to take the ACT (Nursing program) on the 20th and I haven't done that since 1990.

[–]JoelQuest 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree completely. Yeah, I'm definitely more learned and wiser than when I was a kid, but the most important thing I learned was A- DISAPRINE.

Instead of passing notes and drawing and fucking around in class, I actually paid attention. And it was good.

[–]new_Habit 15 points16 points ago

A- DISAPRINE? Why not A+?

[–]expertunderachiever 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My fiancee (29 yrs old) recently did driver training for the first time. She commented on how the kids wouldn't pay attention, play with their phones, one brought a kindle to read [ignoring the class].

What you're witnessing is age but also the concept of "my money" vs. "mommy's money." When you're paying for the classes yourself you tend to want to get your value out of them. When you're still living with mommy and daddy you don't care as much

[–]MaunaLoona 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Taking the class in our state lowers the age at which you can get a driving permit. Their goal is to get the permit first, and learning a distant 2nd. They think they know how to drive.

[–]expertunderachiever 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here it drops 4 months off your G2 permit, G1 permit allows you to drive with an experienced driver, G2/G you can drive on your own...

[–]UnfortunateTruths 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, I was that kid in class that would not pay any attention in driver's training and still passed without a problem. Who's money it was wasn't an issue.

[–]JustHere4TheDownVote 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe both, but for sure "way more focused". The older people are always DEAD SERIOUS. Which is fine, because I understand they can't fuck around and well, it's college and it should be serious. But for most it's like, "Great, the older person, now I have to actually do something otherwise they'll start bitching."

[–]notLOL 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More focused. Young people have a whole bunch of things going on.

[–]dundreggen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I went back at 31. I am now 36 and finishing up (I did two rounds in there..)

I have to say for the most part I found the 'kids' great. Many were mid 20s. I got invited to things, and even went. Had fun.

[–]theParkster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Went back when I was 25, freshmen/sophomores always felt the need to tell me all their party stories.

[–]evoflux 1 point2 points ago

[–]throwingks 20 points21 points ago

Good on you. I am 33, and going back after 10 years. I can say that my grades are tremendously better this time around.

[–]mediocreearthling 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah! I went back at 30 and just graduated with my bachelors last year! Took me 5 years (3 of community college and 2 at university). So much better this time around for me as well. I was a high school screw up/drop out with a GED. It's strange that this time around my grades were actually really good! I think some people do much better at school when they are a responsible adult and paying for it themselves. In my case, I think it also helped starting out at community college. Gave me a lot of confidence. When I transferred to the university, I found it much more competitive and cut throat. And I was in a nursing program, you'd think nursing students would be more of the encouraging hippie types.

[–]throwingks 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. My wife got her nursing degree at 25ish. Of all of her study partners, she is the only one to still nurse.

That's awesome that you are turning your life around. Stories like yours are an inspiration to keep me motivated.

[–]merrywhoyear 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Indeed. Weed/pussy were much more relevant when I was 18 whereas now that I'm 28 I actually pay attention.

I'm 36 and about to go back in the fall. I took night classes for a while, but had to stop when my son was born and my work schedule became less predictable. I was 32 when I first went back for my undergrad degree and I was definitely not the oldest person in any of my classes. Can't wait to go back.

They're not all terrible. Just most of them. I'm 26 and I work at a college so I get to take free classes. I got my degree at the "traditional" age, so I just sort of fuck around and take whatever sounds interesting. I only go to night classes, so the age range is more diverse than daytime classes. And most of the 18 year olds do annoy the shit out of me, but I've met some cool kids, even some Redditors (there was a kid who didn't know about the Reddit Enhancement Suite and he gave me the biggest hug when I showed it to him). A girl in my project group got a Tenacious D reference I made and I was so proud of her.

I don't even think this is old. Consider that the average student graduates in 6 years. Also, 50% of those who begin school never finish.

[–]HegPeg 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This makes me feel way better. I changed majors my senior year. I am very happy I did (I LOVE my major now) but it means it will be 6 years (total) to graduate. Its a little tough seeing some people who knew what they wanted to major in from the get go and graduate in 4 years. Knowing the average is 6 years makes me feel much better.

I have a girlfriend and I really don't want to deal with the advances of what my mind has classified as little girls. Sometimes random thoughts cross you mind like, this chick was in diapers when I lost my virginity and make any hypothetical romantic involvement unappealing.

Also: Teenage girls are just awful to be around.

[–]squarl 10 points11 points ago

[–]Alabama_Man 3 points4 points ago

Legal is not an issue as 24y/o girls are every bit as hot, twice as easy and just as horny. They're also much less vapid, obnoxious and high maintenance. I already have a younger GF (who is the hottest chick I know in real life) so altogether, in my current situation, I have nothing to gain from the attention of these girls.

And find ways to relate everything the instructor is talking about to something you've personally experienced.

[–]bobwoodshed 6 points7 points ago

Absolutely! The anecdotes are especially useful when you haven't done any of the reading and use them as an attempt to convince the instructor otherwise.

[–]TheSim1derful 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed! And if the instructor is one of those "get-to-know-you" people and asks your name and major, be sure to dictate a full summary of your past employment to him/her. This should ideally take 7-10 minutes.

[–]alamandrax 11 points12 points ago

Also mention how it's necessary to grease a lot of palms to get anything done in this country (applies to all countries).

[–]Sir_Meowsalot 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Make friends with your professors and make sure to talk to them after class about the subject on hand. It'll make a huge difference in understanding the lecture and course versus just listening to it and not asking questions which the Prof. can go into detail after class.

Edit: Be careful who you share your notes and such with the youngsters. They'll try to take advantage of you by asking if they can borrow your notes. Don't give in to any of their puppy dog antics. They are there to study and learn and if they can't bother to do that while in class...too bad for them. Don't get pulled into going to parties and stuff like that it never ends well for you. Do not and I must stress DO NOT accept the plea of one of them emailing you or talking to you in class to proofread their essays. If you get put into a group project do not become that guy or gal who gets the most work because they know you'll do your work and will ride on your coattails.

Edit 2: Great, you changed your message and now mine makes no sense. Bah! throws papers into the air

{EDIT: My first day I arrived early for my math class, and the lone student who arrived before I did inquired if I was the teacher. Can't say I blame him as I kind of look like George Costanza }

Surely you're close enough in age to not be uncle. I'm 25 and I'm apparently supposed to be referred to as "brother" by a 4 year old.

Although maybe they're being sarcastic to you. You're their elder, slap them upside the head.

[–]ethraax 5 points6 points ago

And wants to make sure the professor knows they "know" everything (although, to be fair, I know quite a few "college-age" students who do the same thing).

[–]TheGirlInTheCorner 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And even when they don't, they're lonely and just keep talking about unrelated things and the prof has no idea how to get them to shut up so the old person just monopolizes class time. It happened in more than one class dammit!

[–]wingers 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm currently pursuing a doublemajor in Engineering.

Due to how my credits worked out, I ended up taking intro to geology with a bunch of 18 y/o (I'm 21).

I spent the entire term whispering to myself "I cannot possibly have been this stupid, please someone tell me I was not that stupid...".

I went back at 24. Loved it. You'll find people that are serious and you just talk to them. Plus you have more in common with your profs, so going out for a drink with them or lunch is less weird and intimidating.

My senior year (the last one, haha), I was about that age as well. I had to take a 100 level class for some gen ed requirement I had forgotten about. As I looked around one day, I realized that my cat was older than most of the kids in there (she died later that year at 20 years old).

I don't know what kind of college you guys go to, but at mine most people are actually quite smart. It could be that I am going to a research college, but I think an adult who has been out of education for a while would feel like the slow one around here. I get good grades and live and breath my major, but I struggle to keep up with all of the wonder kids.

[–]marieelaine03 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've actually had both experiences! People in my major were actually incredibly smart, and would be discussing really important topics even while drunk out of their mind... now fast forward to those elective classes that everyone takes (spanish, humanities, whatever)...and people instantly become dumb as fuck.

perfect example : we were reading a book for an English course, and this one girl hassled the teacher for a good 30 minutes about "why are they saying that he can see beige through the water?!?!"...teacher and everyone else : "it's the sand..."................her : "but no, like...you don't get it, he's saying here that he can see beige"

Took all my strength not to punch her lol

I'm 22. I'm considering only doing online college. I be disappointed to miss the classroom environment, but holy shit, people are SO stupid. I can hardly focus on the lecture because I keep imagining different ways to punch everyone in the face. Are there any non-online 21+ colleges?

[–]ohok1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm 26 and going back to college with only 9 credits under my belt. But I work full-time and make a descent salary (over 52k/year) doing a not-so-difficult job.
I will be doing online classes only as well. I had to attend the orientation at the community college I'm attending and there were only 2 students there: me and some former military guy who appeared to be mid-30s.
Online is seriously the best way to go for me. I can't concentrate in classroom environments. My last class was online, and I made awesome study materials and emailed to my classmates who were very appreciative of my contribution. In a class environment, I'd be shy and struggling to focus, and missing hours at my job.
