With a stunt like that, a better knowledge of physics could have helped him understand why this might not work. Reading about how it ended makes me sad.

I agree. After reading that I went back to watch it and felt horrified that I was watching the last stunt of this mans career and the incident that made him take his own life.

The ramp is too damn high!!!

[–]thatguy2014 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Someone later did the same stunt, and it worked perfectly. This guys problem was that he misjudged how fast the van was going, so he decided to speed himself up, which caused him to go to fast up the ramp to be controllable. The stunt would have worked, but he messed it up.

[–]mcmurphy1 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wouldn't the angle of the ramp have a lot to do with it as well?

[–]imgonnacallyouretard 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The angle of the ramp, the speed of the van, and the speed of the bike all have a lot to do with it

[–]NeuralAgent 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His friend did the stunt which was broadcast in TV. I am fully aware of this. None the less, it was a physics issue, the truck was moving too fast. Force, speed... Those are things used in understanding physics. How is saying he erred in his understanding of physics wrong?

[–]thatguy2014 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He most certainly erred in his judgement about the physics of the ramp in the moments leading up to his jump, but I believe his initial understanding of the physics of his jump was correct. He knew that the speed of his bike plus the speed of the ramp coming toward him had to be a certain speed, and he knew that if it was the right number, he would be unable to successfully perform his stunt. Knowing this, when he saw the van approaching, he judged, inaccurately, that the van was moving to slow, so he compensated by speeding up on his bike, which lead to his crash.

TL;DR: His understanding of physics was fine, otherwise he would had not made the adjustment he did. His judgement of relative speeds, however, was not good, and was the cause of his crash.

[–]NeuralAgent 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can see that, so good point. I suppose then, it would have been better to abort and change the speed of the van, foreseeing a fatal error in one's calculation is usually a good practice when using physics as well. I'm a cyclist, so i completely understand. But hind site is 20/20. Either way, this story makes me sad.

It is a sad story, but at the same time the guy's only pleasure in life came from performing dangerous stunts that could, at any time, have resulted in this outcome.

If anything, it is bittersweet that his love in life was an activity that endangered itself by its very nature.

[–]BaconCat 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a sad story, yeah, but at the same time people like Winkelmann did this kind of thing in part to entertain and make people happy. So while what happened afterwards was incredibly unfortunate, having a bit of joy brought to your life by laughing at it is, in a way, a positive and appropriate legacy.

The thing to be sad about is that Winkelmann obviously needed better medical support and didn't get it. His depression should have been picked up and treated just as seriously as his physical injuries.

[–]NeuralAgent 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aren't we men told to "man up" and "suck it up"? That's why people like him don't get the proper support they need, so the thought that he is suffering from a serious medical condition would then never be considered. Look how many times people are reported to havd committed suicide, when reading or watching the news. The family and friends seem to say a lot, they didn't see this coming.

[–]BaconCat 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a lot of stigmas surrounding mental health issues for each gender, all of which are unfortunate. People need to learn the difference between feeling a little down and actually being depressed - not to mention be more aware of the situations that could lead to either. I don't think you can save everyone, but a large part of rehab should be psychotherapy that extends well beyond the physical therapy.

[–]iamadogforreal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Err, I don't think he was this selfless superman you make him out to be. Most people who engage in competitive sports, are, well competitive. They're there to outdo the competition, be flashy, break records and attract advertisers. He's not an entertainer, he's a professional athlete. I'm so sick of athletics being turned into some kind of holy calling like its some self-less act. Come on.

Lets not make him out to be some guy who dressed up as a clown at 5am and spent his pre-work mornings at the children's cancer ward.

depression should have been picked up and treated just as seriously as his physical injuries.

We don't know anything about his state of mind. For all we know he made a rational decision to end his life because all the things that make him what he is (athelete, competitor, etc) was taken from him forever. While I certainly never endorse suicide, I believe there are two kinds of suicides: depression fueled over nothing and semi-rational acts over real events. His sounds like the latter.

[–]BaconCat 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Er.. at no point did I even come close to claiming he was a superman, superior to anyone, or really make any kind of assessment as to what kind of a human being he was. I'm really baffled as to how you arrived at this assertion. Re-read what I said:

people like Winkelmann did this kind of thing in part to entertain and make people happy.

Most stunt-devil types get off on making people entertained or positive reactions, so yeah, often its a selfish endeavour on some level. The other reasons why they do it is usually not even known to themselves.

I won't make an assumption as to why he killed himself; you, me, and maybe no one knows that answer. All I said was that depression is a real and serious consequence of major injuries and should be treated just as seriously as the physical injuries.

[–]Cestdujamaisvu 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No need to feel bad about that really. The man was a professional BMX rider. He very much knew the risks that his stunt entailed but did it any way. There's nobody to be blamed but himself.

[–]windyplace 40 points41 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, that and a complete misunderstanding of physics.

[–]NeuralAgent 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I saw the truck and already started thinking the physics of this stunt is all wrong and will not end well. Very sad. This is why more in depth physics should be offered in public school. I know my physics classes helped me not do dumb shit in my 20's.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So help an ignoramus out. The physics behind this that make it obviously a bad idea is that, the forward motion of the van won't be lost but instead transfer to the biker. Combined with his own motion they will sort of "cancel" each other out and send him more straight up than foward. Is that any where near right? To me that seems more like common sense than in depth physics knowledge, but I also didn't choose to ride bikes as my career so who knows.

[–]L1M3 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not just the fact that the van moving toward him added to the force of his jump, but the angle of the ramp sent him pretty much straight up. If it had been a softer angle then the consequences of failure might have been less severe, and maybe even a successful trick.

[–]leshake 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The angle of the ramp also gave him no rotation so even if he had the timing right he would have come down about 180 degrees from where he should have been.

[–]Evil_Mini_Cake 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We can simplify this: after you hit a jump you need a transition to land on. The moving truck made the rider hit the jump much faster than expected. He continued travelling forward while the truck (with the landing ramp attached) continued moving in the opposite direction. Rider went way too high due to the steep take-off ramp, and the truck was long gone by the time he came down to land.

[–]Johnny_Motion 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Came here just to have the physics explained to me. Reddit doesn't disappoint.

[–]Filip22012005 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not cancelling, adding. Just consider the speed with which the biker hit the truck. Say the biker went 15 km/h, and the truck went 35 km/h. The biker went 50 km/h up the ramp. That's extremely fast. Use the weight of the biker and g to calculate the height, and it's pretty easy to see why this is such a bad idea. Or brilliant idea.

[–]echo419 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So it's been awhile since I've taken physics but I'm curious as to why he is going 50 km/h up. I understand that in the x direction that the velocities cancel (to an extent) and that he goes vertical, but how does 10 km/h + 35 km/h in the x = 50 km/h in the y? Is it simply that the horizontal motion is converted into vertical and if so, since I can't remember, what principle of mechanics is that by?

[–]straightgineer 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Filip is just wrong. There is nothing about the mechanics dynamics of the situation that would result in the biker going 50kmh. The issue is really that the bike doesn't have a constant force in the direction of the van to keep its relative position correct. By adjusting the speed of the van post departure everything would have worked out.

[–]HalfRations 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't done physics in a few years but I'll take a stab at it. If the bike was standing still and you hit it straight on with the ramp truck it would still go up the ramp, so I'm guessing the friction between the tire and the pavement is greater than that of the tire + wooden ramp so when you apply the force to it, friction pushes back which causes the bike to start moving up the ramp. Normally this is where you would smash into the bike but since the ramp translates the horizontal velocity into vertical the bike moves up the ramp and goes straight up.

So it wouldn't be a clean 50 up, there would be losses from the initial impact of the lip of the ramp and the tire, but most of the velocity should translate. Which appears to be the case based on the gif.

[–]NeuralAgent 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes you understand correctly more or less. And that understanding you have is in fact rudimentary physics, it's not just 'common sense'. You actually have an understanding of the world around you, have a cookie. _^ But seriously, it's easy to overlook something like this, the only problem with this trick is to know how fast the truck should be moving and the second is to determine the speed of the bike. This determines the height he achieves and time it takes to land. Of course there is the force applied on the cyclist, can he handle the force applied to land if the speeds are correct? Physics.

You know what? He doesn't even need to know physics. If they had simply taken precautions he probably wouldn't have been hurt as badly. Something like a landing pad that the surrounding people could put under him in the event that the trick fails.

[–]mariod505 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It totally could have worked if they had done some calculations about the speed the truck needed to go and maybe some trials without people involved. It's not an unreasonable thing to get to happen, but it's not something you just try to see what would happen.

Same here. Been riding for 15+ years. Broke my hand/wrist in '09 and haven't really been able to ride the same since. I can completely understand how something so prevalent in your life, when ripped away, could completely take away the very essence of your existence.

Yeah we built a ramp van

[–]peetee32 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

in my mind im thinking they consulted several engineers and physicists to help plan and design the trick. they did hundreds of tests and hours of video analysis using foam pits and other extra safety measures. the day of the trick the original driver fell extremely i'll and his twin brother stepped in for him, unknown to the rest of the group. he misunderstood the directions and was driving 5mph faster then normal.

or, you know, winklemann just woke up one morning with stupid idea for a trick and said, "we'll do it live!

[–]ricketgt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They did do somewhat due diligence. Colin was a pro at this point and was pretty comfortable on a bike. I think he had just recently done this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K9JOPGRlUg so you know, he did do some preparation, but a small box jump they never really thought it could've turned out that bad, but they found out the hard way. People are only saying "LOL Physics" because it turned out so bad and we found out how bad it could actually get, but just looking at a small 6' box jump and a van going slowly, you would never realize it would launch him some 15-20 feet in the air...

[–]ExdigguserPies 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He obviously wasn't expecting what happened, but someone should have done a little maths to check the ramp would be beneath him when he landed.

"Hey, should we check physics to make sure the ramp will be beneath you when you come down?"

"nah I'll just wing it".

[–]EreTheWorldCrumbles 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I dunno, to either land it or hurt himself, with a chance of serious injury or death.
But that's extreme sports. Hell, that's sports. Hell, that's life.

If he landed it "Whoa, that was incredible!".
But since he didn't, "FUCKING IDIOT DESERVES BROKEN LEGS".

[–]zeCrazyEye 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But since he didn't, he must not have planned/practiced/tested/understood what he was about to do, so yea.. kinda deserved broken legs.

Don't take that the wrong way I'd much rather he walked away from it. But yea he should have done more testing or taken more precautions.

[–]penguinswithpie -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know. I just can't seem to feel bad for someone who would do something stupid like that and then kill themselves. I can understand that he didn't want to live after not being able to ride again, but he really shouldn't have tried to pull a stunt like that. My two main passions are playing guitar and video games. I might want to kill myself if something happened to my hands that didn't allow me to do either of those things, too, which is why I'm not doing stupid things that will chop of my fingers or something.

[–]EreTheWorldCrumbles 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His passion was pushing the limits of what is possible, not simply riding motorcycles.

[–]GeorgeForemanGrillz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Push the limit of what is possible. Let's jump off a 1000 ft cliff!

[–]penguinswithpie 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which is why I don't feel bad. He obviously knew the risks but didn't care to put enough effort into figuring out if a stunt like that would actually work. It's the same reason that I don't feel bad when base jumpers kill themselves or anyone else doing ridiculously dangerous things just for the hell of it.

[–]ownworldman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Soliders are taking great risk. Do you also not feel for the killed ones?

[–]penguinswithpie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. They volunteer to go out and kill people and in doing so risk their own lives. I don't consider today's soldiers heroes or people that are fighting for my freedom like so many others do. Whether they go out into the desert to kill people or not has no effect on my rights or yours. I'm not saying I want them to die, I'm just saying I'm indifferent. They knew the risks yet signed up for it anyway. Blind patriotism isn't healthy for an individual.

[–]ownworldman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But knowing the risk of dying doesn't diminish the worth of the human being!

[–]penguinswithpie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No it doesn't, but who is to judge the worth of a human anyway? We all are, I suppose, and I, personally, judge that all humans lives are worth the same: nothing at all. I will continue to care for those I love and who I am close to. I will have empathy and sympathy for those who are victims, but I find it hard to empathize and sympathize with those who make themselves victims. Yes, it is unfortunate, but it can't be helped that you have played your own cards poorly. Everyone is given their own hand, it is how you choose to play it that matters.

As a former BMX rider who used to like seeing CW ride, I'm very surprised he did this...I've stopped riding because it hurts my hip/back, since I've broke my hip and pretty much fucked my back up real bad. It was hard as fuck to stop because of injury, but I had to man up to the fact that, when you get older, the superman effect just isn't there anymore! Sad.
