I think the rule should be changed. In some cases, you should not put the punchline, for example, if I the title to this was "we solve mysteries and shit" then it would ruin the joke, but sometimes, giving the punchline away from the start does not ruin the joke half way through, and some times, may add to the comedic value like some treasure hunter type shit.

So I suggest the rule gets the fuck out, and we let the vote system decide what jokes are ruined and what are not.

The way I see it is this, people get pissed off when people link to an image on a page with a load of ads and crap, they just want to see a picture. Or the image is the 5th one on a page (as many are on the comic in question). In general links and comments don't go well together on Reddit, it's either a link or text not the two combined.

So people take the image and place it on a site they know will be there.

There is also the very likely event that the person who posted the image has no idea where it came from.

Last of all I couldn't give a crap where it came from, and for the record does the person at marriedtothesea credit the original artist give he just sticks a speech bubble on it?

I understand what you're saying, but then why is the top comment a link to the original website? Clearly there are some people who don't care about where it came from, but there are many more who do. If you don't care, then just don't click the link to the source if one appears, but don't claim it doesn't matter if the source is there.

I don't get why OPs don't do this...at the very worst they'll get comment karma from a few people who wanted to know the source, or respect that due credit is given.

Assuming, the OP didn't know where it came from, it takes about an extra 2 minutes (if even that) to do a reverse Google image search where it would pop right up.

Also, if I may direct you to the sidebar:

Rehosted webcomics will be removed. Please submit a link to the original comic's site and preferably an imgur link in the comments

Though it's not quite what the rules are requesting, rehosting to imgur and linking to the site in the comments achieves more or less the same goal.

As for Married to the Sea, the images it takes are public domain images and they aren't usually accompanied with an authors name. Still, they are making it their content with the speech bubbles, not just rehosting the same images.

tl;dr It doesn't take that much effort to find a webcomics author and less effort to link to the actual page, so there's not really any reason not to do it.

I admit my last point was a little flippant.

I wasn't necessarily justifying it, just coming up with a couple of reasons why people do it. Short hand answer is they are lazy and the viewers in general couldn't give a toss either way.

The reason people insist on putting the origin of these comics is because not providing it:

  1. Fails to give credit to the original author's creative work, and

  2. Completely deprives the original author of any money he or she might have made from advertisements.
