That is about so much more than religion.

This pretty much simplifies the method of enforcement of all social norms into a nice little picture.

Take a good look at /r/atheism for example.

I think most of the theists think it's exactly the other way around.

There are a number of studies that demonstrate that people will go against their better judgement if they believe it will make them part of the consensus. They will act harshly towards those who they know are correct if they believe those people are against the consensus, and they will act favourably towards those who they know are wrong if they believe those people are part of the consensus.

Bad ideas can spread through societies and take them over - even when the majority of adherents secretly disagree with the idea, thanks to this psychological tick.

My favorite part of this cartoon is that the "thinker" keeps a one of the flowers on his lapel. Clearly he hasn't completely given up on his ideas but feels the need to try and fit in, I think we all feel this way from time to time. As for using this image to criticize anyone's beliefs, shame on you you're no better than the laughing men in this cartoon.

Shel's wisdom will last forever. Where the Sidewalk Ends should be shelved in the adult section, just to remind people how to truly live. I remember when he died; I was in second grade but still felt that a light had been switched off somewhere in the universe.

His death hit me about as hard as Steve Irwin:(

Steve Irwin was wrong to hit you.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

No, it should read His death his me about as hard as Steve Irwin's

Steve Irwin was my childhood hero. He inspired me to become a marine biologist. I was crushed when I heard of his death, to make it worse, it was on my birthday. :(

Just an FYI Silverstein was Jewish even in his adult life, but I believe the cartoon is still open to interpretation.

It's the foundation of r/atheism as well.

Edit: some people downvote my observation for some reason, I find it an amusing illustration of my point.

r/atheism is nothing without religion but would be everything without it.

I can't think of a meaning of your comment that I could agree with.

It's ironic that you using this cartoon to bash religious people exactly demonstrates the cartoon's point.

Hadn't thought of that, you're completely right.

If I could upvote you a million times over I would do it twice. I can't remember the last time I was so deeply moved, and by such simple imagery. I wept where I'm sitting.

This is a repost of a top comment in another thread or that guy linked it and got dues for it, dunno which. I like it though.

Dr. Suess' Daisy Head Maisy taught me so much as a kid that when I became a babysitter for 4 little girls I dug it out of my closet and showed it to them. They loved it.

I don't see it anywhere else in the comments, so I'd like to point out that this is from Different Dances. The whole book is filled with profound imagery drawn by Shel. A lot of it is NSFW or children, but I would highly recommend that everyone read it at least once.

Upvoted because i find the use of the drawing interesting, but I don't think I agree.
