For the curious, that's a gentoo penguin and an elephant seal (female or young male). No use in making the gen-three penguin jokes. I've heard them all. The following pics are from a gentoo encounter with a Weddell seal at Yankee Harbour on Greenwich Island. The Weddell decided to take a nap in the gentoo's nest and when the penguin came home, shenanigans ensued. Watching a 5 kilo penguin trying to pry a 500 kilo seal out of its resting place was a riot. They eventually settled on an arrangement. Enjoy

I wish mine was that gentle, but being a Manx, he only operates at three speeds: stationary, high-speed trot, and full on hell-bent-legs-blurred streak of feline. The result is that when he "walks" on me when I'm sleeping, it's more like a sharp kick and bound than anything actually resembling footsteps. It wakes me right up and I always feel a bit used and taken for granted.

I don't think most people get what's going on here. The sea lion has had its hide all ripped up and the penguin being a jack-ass (pun intended) jumps right on his open wound. This is also awesome because sea lions love to eat penguins so this is not only a ballsy penguin but also one who's doling out proper retribution.

I never saw so many socially awkward penguins as I did on the Otago coast. About 6 of them were all trying to get up the hill but there was a sea lion in the way. It was hilarious to watch them all get around it whilst appearing to not care, they all failed.

You people do know that is a leopard seal, which can grow up to 12 feet long and eats penguins and smaller seals, right?
